I've lived in New York (Brooklyn) most of my life, but I did live in LA briefly. They're 2 different animals and LA is MUCH worse when it comes to public assistance. The difference is that people aren't living all up on top of each other and as a whole, its much more divided. In New York, "affordable" and "low income" and "Section 8" is all mixed in because developers and owners get tax breaks for it. She really shouldn't be so sensitive.

Honey there is nothing wrong with welfare. Do you know how expensive rent and food is these days? The average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in a city runs you about $2,000 a month not including utilities, transportation, insurance, cable bills, clothes, and school loans. Even with government assitance you are still up to your neck in debt. The only thing government assistance is good for is just that assistance.
Over a million poor people in New York, under the poverty level. Someone is going to be on welfare. It might be staggering because the amount under poverty is more than the total population of other cities, even other metropolitan areas. As far as Black men being on welfare or Section 8 a lot of poor Black men are completely out of the system. Meaning they truly are on the street, or on the couch of woman that is on Section 8. Welfare isn't really an option for a Black man.

You have to pull the disabled (physically or mentally) card in order to get it. Woman just have to have a baby or play the mentally or physically disabled card. Black men CAN get welfare too. I think it's unfair to generalize an entire city based on one neighborhood. You seem to just live in a poor neighborhood. As someone who has lived in New York for a while, I'm not sure if you realize the cost of living is really expensive. I, myself have never been on welfare, but I'm a NYer and to me it sounds as if you're talking down to people that you don't really know. EBT made it easier to track and closed classic loopholes. One of the original faults of "stamp" based paper systems was that the stamps came in dollar amounts, so a common trick was to use them to buy something cheap (candy, gum) and the store would give you cash back, effectively converting the stamp into general use tender.
SNAP (food stamps) is a separate program from Section 8...the reason you see people on Section 8 with SNAP benefits is the requirements to qualify for both are similar. EBT cards were required by federal regulation to replace paper based methods, an initiative of the Bush administration. The political reason given is that it makes it less embarrassing for the recipient. The reality is because there was (and still is) fraud in the SNAP program.

I spent 4 1/2 months in Los Angeles and met several black women that were utilizing Section 8! The fridge breaks down and all the food goes bad and it's 10 days until pay day and you have it in the back of your mind, "if I just hadn't paid my tithes on Sunday, I might be able to replace some of this food..." Tough choices.
My mother worked for a community service in rural Ohio, these were people who would not eat if it were not for these programs.
Just because she just had a culture shock doesnt mean people hate on you. This young lady has a lot to learn Im sure she would be surprised she took a walk in some different parts of her own block. Sam is telling the truth. With government assistance, people are less likely to go out and work when you can get things for free. The government does not want the black or latino community to progress. They will keep you in the cycle of freebies and all they ask from you is your vote. All I can say is try. Nothing is wrong with needing assistance from time to time, especially if you're a young person just starting out. I've lived in New York (Brooklyn) most of my life, but I did live in LA briefly. They're 2 different animals and LA is MUCH worse when it comes to public assistance. The difference is that people aren't living all up on top of each other and as a whole, its much more divided. In New York, "affordable" and "low income" and "Section 8" is all mixed in because developers and owners get tax breaks for it. She really shouldn't be so sensitive.

The average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in a city runs you about $2,000 a month not including utilities, transportation, insurance, cable bills, clothes, and school loans. Even with government assitance you are still up to your neck in debt. The only thing government assistance is good for is just that assistance.

Over a million poor people in New York, under the poverty level. Someone is going to be on welfare. It might be staggering because the amount under poverty is more than the total population of other cities, even other metropolitan areas. As far as Black men being on welfare or Section 8 a lot of poor Black men are completely out of the system. Meaning they truly are on the street, or on the couch of woman that is on Section 8. Welfare isn't really an option for a Black man.

I think it's unfair to generalize an entire city based on one neighborhood. You seem to just live in a poor neighborhood. EBT made it easier to track and closed classic loopholes. One of the original faults of "stamp" based paper systems was that the stamps came in dollar amounts, so a common trick was to use them to buy something cheap (candy, gum) and the store would give you cash back, effectively converting the stamp into general use tender.

SNAP (food stamps) is a separate program from Section 8...the reason you see people on Section 8 with SNAP benefits is the requirements to qualify for both are similar. EBT cards were required by federal regulation to replace paper based methods, an initiative of the Bush administration. The political reason given is that it makes it less embarrassing for the recipient. The reality is because there was (and still is) fraud in the SNAP program.

I spent 4 1/2 months in Los Angeles and met several black women that were utilizing Section 8! In addition...I met some of the most rude, arrogant, fake, and may I say "stank" women in my entire life. So my suggestion to you...If you hate NYC that much...and you totally love LA...GO BACK! "Welfare" as you put it is a hand up ... not a hand out. Those programs, although abused by a lot of people, are a safety net for many. The fridge breaks down and all the food goes bad and it's 10 days until pay day and you have it in the back of your mind, "if I just hadn't paid my tithes on Sunday, I might be able to replace some of this food..." Tough choices.
My mother worked for a community service in rural Ohio, these were people who would not eat if it were not for these programs.

Sam is telling the truth. With government assistance, people are less likely to go out and work when you can get things for free. The government does not want the black or latino community to progress. They will keep you in the cycle of freebies and all they ask from you is your vote. All I can say is try. If you cant find a job or a better job, move to a different city. And most important, keep up the faith. Best of luck to all who are struggling during this hardship time or during lifetime .

Nothing is wrong with needing assistance from time to time, especially if you're a young person just starting out. The problem is these ghetto black women covered in tattoos that you see in the store on welfare that just keep having more babies knowing she can't afford them. There are people that need help out there but there are also people that just want to get everything handed to them, and thats the problem. It seems like people are being raised to work the system.
