Why Democracy and Shiite Islam have to be hand and had to 'RULE' the Iranians. Comparing IRAN to EGYPT is absolute non-sense. It is not an ideal thing for Iran. Egypt (a Coptic nation) lost its Egyptian-Coptic identity to Arabization. Egypt lost language, identity, culture to fierceful ARAB Conquistadors. The IR has done the same except by taking its nation HOSTAGE for the past 30+ yrs. Shamefully, in the name of GOD. Then answer me, what part of this hooliganism is DEMOCRATIC?

Dr Dabbashi and Bayat, we were a God believing nation before 1997. People were kind, helpful to each other. We worshipped God with joy and happiness. But so called intellect like you had to come and destroy our country, our livelihood, culture, history, freedom, .., .. , and even our faith all in the name of GOD. Do you relay think Iranians are that naive to fall second time for the same nightmare? All those intellect couldn't tolerate IR yet, from their asylum holes still are digging our grave!

I belive that the english subtitle has been intentionally manipulated to mislead the english speaking audience!!! it's worth listening to what Dabashi says From 10:00s to 10:07s! "History of Islam" instead of "the Iranian Green Movement"? what a shame!!!! Green movement is a secular movement and this could only be confirmed after a free Un-Monitored referendum! "Islam" is NOT our issue!

In my opinion Dr. Bayat doesn't know Islam very well. Islam is a political religion and it has laws about inheritance, marriage and all the public actions in society. Islam has "amr be maroof va nahi az monkar" which is in conflict with democracy and freedom of thought. How do you explain the basic responsibility of a Muslim about "Jihad" and dying in the name of God "Shahadat" with democracy.

I would like to thank Dr. Dabbashi but I do not agree with Dr. Bayat. With respect to Islam and other religions I believe that all religions should be practiced equally and privately by their followers/ believers. We should not say because Islam is the main religion in Iran then the next thing that should happen in Iran is democracy and Islam together. Why Iran should be known as Islamic Iran in the world? Just because the Muslims outnumber other religions?We have Iran our land in common.

I have been watching The Week in Green regularly in the past and I always found it interesting, but this episode in particular.

To me as a non-Muslim German the Green Movement in some way seemed to be a Reform Movement of Islam, an attempt to reconcile Islam and democracy. It is good to see my view substantiated by Mr. Bayat ;-)

Well I did not say I support some sort of "Islamic Democracy"... I doubt it is possible. But I think parts of the Green Movement see this as their goal.
