im 11 and ive read 22 books of his, and i love them. all i actually sent him a letter and he replied saying that if i want, i could go to port hope and he could sign my books!
I love his work. Granted I've only read a few of his books but I loved them all. My dad read them to me when I was younger. I think it was The Dog who Wouldn't Be, then Owls in the Family which is one of my favorites. Then later my dad got an audiobook of Never Cry Wolf from the library, read by Mowatt himself. He taped it for me but I lost it in the course of the many moves I've made throughout my life. It was abridged somewhat but still great. I wasn't too keen on the movie though.
I revere Farley Mowat for his conservationist/ecologist stands. I agree that And No Birds Sang is an outstanding book on Canadian fighting during WWII going up the Italian "boot". I would say it's the best anti-war book I've ever come across. He's a master story teller.
Btw, in his Wikipedia entry, his ethnicity is labelled as "white"., a vague descriptor that stands for British. The entry should read " British Canadian"
The first book I read: The Boat Who Wouldn't Float and fell in love with him and his books.I read "Owls in the Family" every year to my classes in 4th grade and they loved it..... great person, writer and human being!
I've been a lover of Farley's writing since I first read a piece from "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float" in a school exam here in Scotland over 40 years ago. Subsequently I read the whole book, and many others. Talking of others, I was given a copy of his latest book "Otherwise" this year, and it too is a great read.
I was extremely moved by his books on the people of the deer, and Farley is a writer who pulls no puncches.
Great man, very good interview. Best wishes to you Farley.
wow he looks so healthy in this video... he was born in 1921... he is almost 90 years old! I've seen men in their 50s who look older than him. Way to go Farley! Canada Loves you!
Farley is truly one of the most important Canadians. I am currently reading his latest memoir,'Otherwise', and enjoying it very much. Farley is inspirational.
I have never seen an 87 year old that is THIS much with it. I'm completely new to this guy (where have I been), but I look forward to reading his books.
farley mowat is my 2nd graders favorite author. he is trying to send him a letter but we cannot find an address or any fan address or anything. does anyone know how to get a letter to him?
Yes, the intellect can be wrong; so can the emotions. That said, Mr. Mowat is a great storyteller, and if he does it by trusting emotions over intellect, then good on him!
So if you fell in love with newfies, why are you against the seal hunt it is a 500 year old tradition and a means of food and livliehood. jeez get a life.
i love Farley Mowat he ian amazing person and i have read the dog wouldn't be and lost in the barrens and i am currently reading the black joke how are hos other books?
Believe it or not, I've heard George W Bush described as someone you might want to have a beer with, but not have as your President. Now here's someone I would want to have a beer with.
Farley was refused entry into the U.S. because of his criticisms of America over it's lack of commitment to conservation issues (still a non issue to most Americans). Speaks volumes for the great man he is, speaks volumes for the American people too!
"speaks volumes for the American people too!" Fuck off. The ecological movement was started by AMERICANS like Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, hell even that nutjob Edward Abbey. China is opening up 2 coal-fired plants a WEEK, how about tempering your snide sarcasm for my country and directing to one that actually deserves it.
Fact: The US, despite claiming to be civilised, still not signed up to Kyoto Protocol! Fact: The US is still largest polluter on Earth! Fact: Hardly any householders in US sort their garbage into seperate bags for recycling. In Britain we have three bags, one for plastics/cans, one for paper/card, one for foodstuffs & miscellany. In the US you use your cars so irresponsibly, driving everywhere! Ever tried walking to work or to the shops!? Fattest nation on Earth, it would do you good!
I hope you know that not all americans are like that. I live in the US and I try to do as much as I can to help the enviroment, that includes recycling
I enjoy how he speaks about the intellect. Sometimes I agree with this sentament. Although I'm from the suburbs, I always feel that I would be most happiest in the countryside. I think I could give up my ipod for the sea any day of the week.
Great conservationist, great writer & educator. Has done so much for the Inuits. Has brought his part of the world into everyone's living room. Given so much pleasure to millions of people with his books. Thanks Farley.
He's done so much to get the environmental movement started. And he did a lot to stop the persecution of wolves and the exploitation of the North Atlantic fisheries. And I agree that he's done much for Inuit.
Although he's been attacked in the press, I think he's one of the most important environmental writers in the world right now. I don't think some people in the press or working on the ecology of the North have ever actually read all of Never Cry Wolf. He never said that wolves live solely on mice. Only when they have pups and cannot go on long hunts away from their dens do they have to live on mice.
ya he's a good man, any of those Prince Edward County boys are good to drink with. Its funny everyone of them has a story to tell. But Farley is the only one to stay sober enough to write about them lol
