I am a farmer from Northern Ireland and thus aware of agflation throughout the world and it's potential effects/ It's hard to contimplate stopping such problems. Thanks for informing more though. Good video.
A very informative video, thanks Andy. Interesting to also hear about what's been happening on the 'Pasta' front in Italy. On the 13th September 2006 a one-day strike was held in the country against buying Pasta because of their price rise from the depleted wheat stocks worldwide. Its also worth mentioning a large proportion of their 'durum wheat' is distributed and sold worldwide. Biggest customer being the US! Share and share alike Mr America?
Thanks for your comment. I heard recently that the CO2 emissions from the production & use of biofuels are actually higher than using petrol. Which is a bit ironic isn't it?
There's nothing like doing your homework before committing yourself is there? :)
Great Video. It is sad to think that people could one day starve just so that Motorvehicles can run. The crazy thing is though, what if corn becomes new Oil and a major source of power on the world Playing Board? With Flooding in the uk getting worse due to global warming every year, how long can the uk survive economicly?
I was only reading the other day about the, so called, 2nd generation of biofuels. Apparently these will not harm the environment, or use up valuable farm land. So there may be some hope, we'll have to wait & see :)
I think this is a rare occasion where I heard about the possible problems early. Unlike the grudging media time stuff like the impact of global warming and pollution get, I remember hearing a lot of concern about corn for fuel. A lot of people thought it was a bad idea for exactly the reasons we see now.
To be honest I understand the initial price increases but I don't really understand the economics enough to understand the big picture because you also hear about farmers going out of business and land being kept fallow. On the surface it sound like planting more corn would help both the farmers and the fuel aspect but I guess that's a naive view of things. I guess like most things there are hard to see ripples that make easy solutions impossible.
A few of these points were familiar, but I have to say the part about the price of tortillas was a shocker. I can only imagine what a 75% increase would do to folks down that way, good grief!
Can't speak for anyone else, of course, but the rise in price of fuel has kept me from going on liesurely drives (which I used to do up until a few years ago).
I find it all very interesting. WIth the price of gas going wild here in the US, they all want new forms of energy. So they're turning to corn for the ethanol, but the price is still very close to the gas. It's my understanding that our govt. is appeasing one special interest group (oil) for another (farmers) and the public doesn't ever get a break. Very interesting vlog. Love the birds in the background!
I'm actually doing a speech on this topic for my provincial speech compition. Thank you very much for the info, it's a big help :)

I'm glad you liked the video. I'm suspect that as a farmer you may well notice this problem more than anyone :)

I didn't mention the potential environmental effects of using biofuels (eg: trees being cut down to allow room to plant crops etc)
Farm subsidies are another problem, which i must admit i'm not an expert on either.
As you say the ripples spread ever further.

Think yourself lucky you don't live in the UK Curt. The price of fuel is far higher over here, approx $9-10 per gallon!!

Unfortunately we try & solve one problem and usually end up creating another one, because we don't think of the possible consequences first.
As for the seagulls, they tend to use our roof as a landing strip. Still it beats the sound of cars!! :)
