@71GA You're never too late! Practice on other user-friendly distro, and read carefully the Beginner's Guide, I guarantee you'll install it without problems!
Do you remember what theme you are using in this video? I really want to build a desktop like you did. It's beautifully elegant. The same is true with the wallpaper. What I really like is all the rounded rectangles.
@hheintze1 Now it's something like 90 megabyte at the startup, with Terminal running and some daemon... It's a lot, but this configuration uses a default generic kernel, it keeps several services running, Terminal (which isn't that lightweight) and so on... On my EEE pc 901, with a custom compiled kernel, compiled packages with optimized compilation flags, only the essential daemons and no composite I reached something like 32 megabyte at the startup, with the possibility of further improvements
@bloozism Concerning bmpanel, I used the Arch theme, you can find it on the official bmpanel page, concerning the Openbox configuration take a look at the Openbox wiki page on the Arch Linux wiki and also on this blog: (google for "urukrama openbox"). those sources are so complete and well written that it's hard to do better!
great looking desktop, im trying to set that fullscreen terminal up too, how did you do that? if i just set xfce4terminal to fullscreen the normal way it overlays itself on top of bmpanel and i cant click the panel anymore!
@TheCellarGuardian Oh, I tried it and I found that if you use the theme "Arch" you cannot enable the system tray in bmpanel. I tried to disable compositing in the theme file and I found it looks ugly ^_^
@TheCellarGuardian Oh, I tried it and I found that if you use the theme "Arch" you cannot enable the system tray in bmpanel. I tried to disable compositing in the theme file and I found it looks ugly ^_^
@lighteningwawa My solution: don't use the system tray, it's really useless! : ) I realized that I used my system tray ONLY to set up volume, so... I just dropped the whole thing and decided to set my volume, just in case, through Alsamixer. I've always a terminal running in its dedicated desktop, so it's really a matter of seconds, if you consider, then, that adjusting the volume isn't a really frequent action...
@lighteningwawa I know it may sound extremist, but if the only application you need the system tray for is Wicd, why don't use a self-made script (there are a lot of ready scripts), or, if you like higher leve programming, make your own utility? I use netcfg, a VERY simple script you can find on Arch, but once you've read the procedure to connect manually to an Access Point (wpa_supplicant, dhclien/dhcpcd and so on...) making a script from it is simple!
Love your setup. Could you possibly post a detailed guide for an Arch noob to emulate your setup, whether that would be a blog post, a script uploaded to Github, or some other means of sharing a detailed guide? I know at least one person would be greatly appreciative of such, probably even more ;)
@inkayacu My friend, as you know, writing a guide is a very time-consuming activity, and unfortunately I have very little time at my disposal... Maybe a day, but until that day is come my best advice is: take a look to the Arch's Wiki, one of the best Wikies I' ve ever seen. Start with the Beginner' s guide to set up a very minimal system, then set up the X server and Openbox, and choose carefully the applications you need, having minimality and lightness in mind.
I love OpenBox + fbpanel (tint2 doesn't really cut it), also have nitrogen and lxappearance and tried lxpanel too. I'm not sure what xcompmgr is, but I have it installed as well.
Beautiful build, I'm impressed. It looks like you took a lot of time with it and have exactly what you wanted. What song is that by the way? Thanks in advance!
yeah, thats what i thought when i saw the video at first, but i see that in a lot of setups like this supprizingly, there is probaly a setting you could use to set it down, then back up when you want, i think it would be nice if you had a big resolution, and or had a big picture collection as it appeared he had
@theif519 I've never tried it on Ubuntu but I think there shouldn't be problems, unless some Gnome component conflict with it, but I really don't think so...
@TheCellarGuardian Thank you for taking your time to reply, but I recently found out that it's either, as you said, Gnome interfering, or it's Unity, which Unity interferes with everything Compiz.
@seth817 I really cannot remember the name of the song, anyway it's a song from the AudioSwap collection of YouTUBE, so, if you search under jazz, maybe you'll find it! It took more than two hours to find it, but when I listened to it, I tought: "Yes, this is what I want. Brilliant."...

@22ness0hayden for Firefox, not all GNOME, but the gtk+ libraries only. They will be installed, but only then firefox is open, the libraries will get loaded, too. It is the same behaviour for K3B and the qt libraries. The performance will be almost the same, dont worry about a great penalty.
I have openbox installed, and for internet I use firefox, for console evilvte (very fast terminal, customizable before compilation), for images Mirage, clock and bla bla, gkrellm. Emesene for music,
Qalcualte! for calculator, gimp for image edit, evince for pdf viewer, and emacs with gtk support for programming.
All this programs uses gtk+ libraries, so there is almost no penalty. I use no taskbar or file manager. The window behaviour is the same of enlightenment windows, and for everything else I use, the console is a great friend (mounting, burning, file managing...). Shortcut capability makes Openbox a very dynamic and fast window manager, not using the menu for anything not special.
I'm gonna try out Openbox on my main computer and my netbook. Currently I'm using which also runs awesome on BOTH machines (okay loadtimes, effects, etc.).
This is by far one of the most beautiful dektop setups I've seen in a while. Arch Linux and Openbox rules. :) Also, the music adds alot to the video. Cheers.
@TheCellarGuardian Np man. I've been planning to switch from Fedora for a while and some videos on arch, and specially yours, have just made my mind about which distro to move into. And also it has a rolling release cycle, which is a big plus. I love keeping my stuff on the bleeding edge.
@AndrewShadows Excellent choice my friend! In this period, even though my primary distribution is still Arch, I'm trying a Fedora Spin, Fedora Security Lab, and I have to say it's quite interesting, in particular under the security aspect, I'm thinking about posting a video on it!
@TheCellarGuardian Oh, I see. I`ve just taken a look at their website and it seems indeed like it`s an interesting distro to try, since I`m really amazed by computer forensics and information security. Thanks for the tip.
Btw, I`m setting up both Arch and Openbox for the very first time -- I`m not even that much familiar with the Linux config files --, so, given the somewhat difficult (though rewarding) work I`m having to put into it, it makes me appreciate even more your setup.
As I told you, this is how I want my PC. So I installed Arch (installing some drivers was an epic adventure) and Openbox. But everytime I enter Openbox (by entering "xinit openbox" or "xinit openbox-session") a blank terminal, labeled as "login", appears and it does nothing but echo some actions (as opening a program). If I close it Openbox gets closed. I've noticed that this does not happen to you, do you have any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks in advance =)
@metasjodiendo Hi my friend, I' m happy you' re getting in Arch and Openbox! You could want to enter directly the graphical environment, if you do, just modify the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 3 to 5. Concerning your issue, you have to edit (create if it doesn't exist) the .xinitrc file in you home (pay attention to the . ), it should contain this string: "exec openbox-session". Once you've done it, start the X server with startx and you'll be in you new Openbox environment!Let me know!
@pablokav This is the first time I hear about Archbang! Tell me more, what's in it? It would be really great if it included ONLY the applications you mentioned, and NOTHING more, or, at least, it would be great for it to be as minimal as possible...
@zubatzu They're quite similiar. Openbox can be configured through only 2 simple xml files and 1 sh script for the autostart, which, at the beginning, are completely blank. Fluxbox, instead, comes with default configuration files. Openbox has no default panel, while Fluxbox has its own panel. They're both fast as hell and minimal, I prefer Openbox due to its adherence to the standards, its nice and clean design, its outstanding simplicity and the lack of any kind of imposition or limitation.
How did you get your panel to look like that? And are you using Gnome as a desktop environment? Sorry, I'm just switching from Ubuntu and openSUSE (KDE) to Arch and am so confused by everything.
You have MANPAGER="vimmanpager" ? I didn't think less could be colorized. I just discovered xcompmgr and it's running on Xmonad on Gentoo. Works quite well I must say. :)
@Ormaaj For what concerns the man pages, I followed the Arch Linux Wiki on "Man Page", there are two methods, one involving most, the other involving less, take a look at that and let me know my friend!
@amdnovello Ciao!
@ibrahimalghamdi94 Hi! Notice that Openbox is a Window Manager, it manages ONLY your windows and decorations, nothing else! You can use it stand-alone or inside a Desktop Manager such as Gnome or KDE, in any case look for Openbox in the Archlinux Wiki, it's a big page with every kind of information you may need, from installation to fine tuning! Let me know my friend!
@adam9575 Hi! I used xvidcap, but I think there are more performant softwares out there! The codec is mpeg4, the container is an .mpeg. (I'm not really into the video stuff, I hope not to have written nonsense!)
@adam9575 Hi! I used xvidcap, but I think there are more performant softwares out there! The codec is mpeg4, the container is an .mpeg. (I'm not really into the video stuff, I hope not to have written nonsense!)
Thanks dude, i could not use sound with xvid cap, has not been compiled in the latest binary is the message i get. Does your Xvidcap package support sound? if not what application did you use to overlay your audio?
@adam9575 No, it doesn't support audio recording, for my video I used the YouTUBE AudioSwap feature, you should give it a try, maybe you'll find a great song for your next video!
@adam9575 Sure, for the prompt and the man pages open the page with all the comments on my video and search for ".bashrc", it's a sequence of 4 comments written 5 months ago, or take a look here (URL follows) wiki archlinux org / index php / General_Recommendations # Man_pages
Oh not much, well, you should know how to use a shell and its basic commands, how to write and read a configuration file, and some basic facts on the system architecture, but don't worry, the Arch Linux wiki is superb! Arch Linux shouldn't be your first Linux distribution, because, anyway, you need a certain experience, but, due to its KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) design, you'll be able to use it without much troubles... : )
@TheCellarGuardian Bro thanks for all the advice I appreciate it..I think I'm gonna do this Arch Linux project..How long did it take to completely set everything up?
@Dafob52 Well, the first time it took me something like 3-4 hours to set up the system and make it work with my hardware (I had some wi-fi issue), then the customization is a long term process and it could take some days, but the important part is already done... Anyway, If you don't find hardware compatibility problems, the basic installation process will be a matter of one or two hours, not more!
@Dafob52 And with basic installation I mean make the system run properly with your hardware, write the most important configuration files and setting up the main programs (X server, Window Manager....)
@Dafob52 Absolutely, the most resource-draining thing in my setup is the transparency effect with xcompmgr, in the WORST case you could have to disable some unnecessary effect like transparency or shadows. Everything else is light as a cloud, and remeber, Linux is, nowadays, the only way to bring new life to your old computers, much faster than before!
@Dafob52 Absolutely. Consider that, in my little eeepc, I have the same distro installed and the RAM usage, when the system is completely started, is ONLY 32 Mb!!!!!!!! Arch Linux + OpenBOX is a KILLER combo, and if you compile your kernel reducing it at the minimum, plus the compilation of the major programs with optimized flags, the performance would be unbelievable. Believe me, Arch Linux (or any other leightweight and power-user oriented distro as well) will bring NEW LIFE to your pc!!!
Your video was really cool, I think that this is how I want my PC to be like. Frame rate looks a bit low, it is a video recording/reproducing issue or a PC issue?
@metasjodiendo Thank you so much! Concerning the low frame rate, it's due to the software I used to record my desktop, XVidCap, and the high quality (it was recorded at a full 1280x800 resolution). Plus, my pc is quite old, so the result is not so smooth as I wished, but, I think, enjoiable anyway! Thank you very much, I'm glad to have read your comment!
@juliansb35 Thank you so much! Anyway, the reference in my user and host name isn't to Donnie Darko (a great film I love), but to a famous J.R.R. Tolkien quote (not E. A. Poe, as it is said in Donnie Darko). : )
Around 0:49 you right-click the desktop while the openbox menu is open and it opens a new menu. In my [default behavior] setup, if I right-click the desktop while a menu is open it just closes the menu; it doesn't bring up a new menu. How did you change that behavior?
@altay8 I didn't change the default behaviour, that effect has been caused by the combination of two really fast right clicks and the inconstant sampling time of xvidcap (the program I used to record my desktop), look at the clock! : D Anyway, it would be interesting, mainly because it makes your interaction faster and free from those "desktop mechanics"! Let me know if you find a way to obtain this! : D
@mentok11 Openbox is a WM (Window Manager), not a complete Desktop Environment, every feature you see on this video is a personal choice, you are completely free to build up your own environment... Anyway, you can install Openbox with every Linux distribution, in particular, if you use Ubuntu, once Openbox is installed you should find something like "Gnome+Openbox" in your GDM menu to choice the session type, it will start a regular Gnome session using Openbox as WM! Let me know my friend!
I really like your desktop TheCellarGuardian. It looks awesome and I think I might actually give Arch Linux a try thanks to our video. The last time I wanted to install it I couldn't be bothered enough. I don't want a "1337" or "h4axor" desktop, I want something intuitive-to-use and sophisticated but not idiotproof and I think that your desktop configuration is really one of the ones I have liked most so far. Good job!
Pretty cool desktop, gave me a couple of ideas to improve my archbox now :P. Also changed my image viewer to ristretto, I was looking for something like that, thanks for sharing.
@jackrok I took it from the Youtube collection (some songs you can use for your videos when you upload them), I'm sorry but I really cannot remember the name...
@Mandragara My video card is an Nvidia GeForce Go 7300. If you have an Nvidia card, you won't have troubles, the open-source driver nv works very well and the official drivers are superb, so it won't be difficult to setup you video card, not only with Arch but with every Linux distribution : D
Damn i ve allways wanted to know enough to install arch linux... well i did that but i never got past the "installing GUI"... TOO BAD :(

@TheCellarGuardian Np man. I've been planning to switch from Fedora for a while and some videos on arch, and specially yours, have just made my mind about which distro to move into. And also it has a rolling release cycle, which is a big plus. I love keeping my stuff on the bleeding edge.
AndrewShadows 1 year ago
@AndrewShadows Excellent choice my friend! In this period, even though my primary distribution is still Arch, I'm trying a Fedora Spin, Fedora Security Lab, and I have to say it's quite interesting, in particular under the security aspect, I'm thinking about posting a video on it!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@TheCellarGuardian Oh, I see. I`ve just taken a look at their website and it seems indeed like it`s an interesting distro to try, since I`m really amazed by computer forensics and information security. Thanks for the tip.
Btw, I`m setting up both Arch and Openbox for the very first time -- I`m not even that much familiar with the Linux config files --, so, given the somewhat difficult (though rewarding) work I`m having to put into it, it makes me appreciate even more your setup.

@TheCellarGuardian Hey mate, I`m having some issues with my menu. Did you build yours from scratch or did you use some sort of menu maker?
AndrewShadows 1 year ago
As I told you, this is how I want my PC. So I installed Arch (installing some drivers was an epic adventure) and Openbox. But everytime I enter Openbox (by entering "xinit openbox" or "xinit openbox-session") a blank terminal, labeled as "login", appears and it does nothing but echo some actions (as opening a program). If I close it Openbox gets closed. I've noticed that this does not happen to you, do you have any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks in advance =)
metasjodiendo 1 year ago
@metasjodiendo Hi my friend, I' m happy you' re getting in Arch and Openbox! You could want to enter directly the graphical environment, if you do, just modify the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 3 to 5. Concerning your issue, you have to edit (create if it doesn't exist) the .xinitrc file in you home (pay attention to the . ), it should contain this string: "exec openbox-session". Once you've done it, start the X server with startx and you'll be in you new Openbox environment!Let me know!

arch plus openbox is also my dream combo; fast as hell, just like on your pc.
I'm using Archbang and use pcmanfm and tint2 as bottom bar and adeskbar, the least intrusive dock as app starter;
nice piano music btw
pablokav 1 year ago
@pablokav This is the first time I hear about Archbang! Tell me more, what's in it? It would be really great if it included ONLY the applications you mentioned, and NOTHING more, or, at least, it would be great for it to be as minimal as possible...

whats diffrence between fluxbox and openbox
zubatzu 1 year ago

@smartarted The panel is bmpanel with the Arch theme, I' ve no Desktop Environment, I'm using Openbox, which manages only windows (Window Manager)

wow è bellissimo il desktop!!
è difficile da usare arch? sono abituato a ubuntu che fa tutto lui :D
amdnovello 1 year ago
@amdnovello Ciao! Fammi sapere, buona fortuna!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@TheCellarGuardian ok grazie
quando avrò coraggio proverò. è che i trovo troppo bene con windows 7. hanno fatto uscire un so degno di esistere dopo vista ahah
amdnovello 1 year ago

great job! I use arch/gnome. and I installed openbox but it did not work. can you send me a link that shows how to install and configure openbox?
ibrahimalghamdi94 1 year ago
@ibrahimalghamdi94 Hi! Notice that Openbox is a Window Manager, it manages ONLY your windows and decorations, nothing else! You can use it stand-alone or inside a Desktop Manager such as Gnome or KDE, in any case look for Openbox in the Archlinux Wiki, it's a big page with every kind of information you may need, from installation to fine tuning! Let me know my friend!

TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
Oh not much, well, you should know how to use a shell and its basic commands, how to write and read a configuration file, and some basic facts on the system architecture, but don't worry, the Arch Linux wiki is superb! Arch Linux shouldn't be your first Linux distribution, because, anyway, you need a certain experience, but, due to its KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) design, you'll be able to use it without much troubles... : )
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@TheCellarGuardian Bro thanks for all the advice I appreciate it..I think I'm gonna do this Arch Linux project..How long did it take to completely set everything up?
Dafob52 1 year ago
@Dafob52 Well, the first time it took me something like 3-4 hours to set up the system and make it work with my hardware (I had some wi-fi issue), then the customization is a long term process and it could take some days, but the important part is already done... Anyway, If you don't find hardware compatibility problems, the basic installation process will be a matter of one or two hours, not more!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@Dafob52 And with basic installation I mean make the system run properly with your hardware, write the most important configuration files and setting up the main programs (X server, Window Manager....)
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@TheCellarGuardian
Sweet, How much of an expert in Linux do you need to be in order to setup this software?
Dafob52 1 year ago
Sweet, how much experience do you think you need in order to setup archlinux properly?
Dafob52 1 year ago
But do you think I could get your exact setup on mine? I'm impressed by the way you've made your computer, you did a pretty great job..
Dafob52 1 year ago
@Dafob52 Absolutely, the most resource-draining thing in my setup is the transparency effect with xcompmgr, in the WORST case you could have to disable some unnecessary effect like transparency or shadows. Everything else is light as a cloud, and remeber, Linux is, nowadays, the only way to bring new life to your old computers, much faster than before!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
@TheCellarGuardian So do you thnk a 1.4 Ghz Intel Pentium M, with 512 MB of Ram, and 35 GB of HD could handle your system?
Dafob52 1 year ago
@Dafob52 Absolutely. Consider that, in my little eeepc, I have the same distro installed and the RAM usage, when the system is completely started, is ONLY 32 Mb!!!!!!!! Arch Linux + OpenBOX is a KILLER combo, and if you compile your kernel reducing it at the minimum, plus the compilation of the major programs with optimized flags, the performance would be unbelievable. Believe me, Arch Linux (or any other leightweight and power-user oriented distro as well) will bring NEW LIFE to your pc!!!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
Hey, what are your system specs?
Dafob52 1 year ago
@Dafob52 Hi! Not brilliant, it's a 1.7 Ghz Intel Dual-Core, 2 Gigabytes of RAM, 120 Gigabytes of HD, nothing special!

Your video was really cool, I think that this is how I want my PC to be like. Frame rate looks a bit low, it is a video recording/reproducing issue or a PC issue?
Congratulations!
metasjodiendo 1 year ago
@metasjodiendo Thank you so much! Concerning the low frame rate, it's due to the software I used to record my desktop, XVidCap, and the high quality (it was recorded at a full 1280x800 resolution). Plus, my pc is quite old, so the result is not so smooth as I wished, but, I think, enjoiable anyway! Thank you very much, I'm glad to have read your comment!

juliansb35 1 year ago
@juliansb35 Thank you so much! Anyway, the reference in my user and host name isn't to Donnie Darko (a great film I love), but to a famous J.R.R. Tolkien quote (not E. A. Poe, as it is said in Donnie Darko). : )

Around 0:49 you right-click the desktop while the openbox menu is open and it opens a new menu. In my [default behavior] setup, if I right-click the desktop while a menu is open it just closes the menu; it doesn't bring up a new menu. How did you change that behavior?
altay8 1 year ago
@altay8 I didn't change the default behaviour, that effect has been caused by the combination of two really fast right clicks and the inconstant sampling time of xvidcap (the program I used to record my desktop), look at the clock! : D Anyway, it would be interesting, mainly because it makes your interaction faster and free from those "desktop mechanics"! Let me know if you find a way to obtain this! : D
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
seems to be a stable and essential DE... i wanna try it.
but... is it possible to install it under ubuntu lucid lynx and start it from the login screen?
mentok11 1 year ago
@mentok11 Openbox is a WM (Window Manager), not a complete Desktop Environment, every feature you see on this video is a personal choice, you are completely free to build up your own environment... Anyway, you can install Openbox with every Linux distribution, in particular, if you use Ubuntu, once Openbox is installed you should find something like "Gnome+Openbox" in your GDM menu to choice the session type, it will start a regular Gnome session using Openbox as WM! Let me know my friend!
TheCellarGuardian 1 year ago
I really like your desktop TheCellarGuardian. It looks awesome and I think I might actually give Arch Linux a try thanks to our video. The last time I wanted to install it I couldn't be bothered enough. I don't want a "1337" or "h4axor" desktop, I want something intuitive-to-use and sophisticated but not idiotproof and I think that your desktop configuration is really one of the ones I have liked most so far. Good job!

Mandragara 1 year ago
@Mandragara My video card is an Nvidia GeForce Go 7300. If you have an Nvidia card, you won't have troubles, the open-source driver nv works very well and the official drivers are superb, so it won't be difficult to setup you video card, not only with Arch but with every Linux distribution : D
