I think it's funny that people claim Metallica made mainstream music for the money, first off they could all have retired the day the black album came out and been millionaires the rest off their lives, and who really thinks Ronnie and the rest of these songs fit in with anything else popular in the 90s? Every album is different, although Load\Reload are the most closely related. I saw many reviews about Death Magnetic, saying the reviewer was glad they went back to their thrash roots. They never went away. Just expressed the thrash in softer tones. Listen to the words, people. A review is just one persons opinion. Peace.

I'm not saying that the Black Album was thrash either just there are a lot of people that like that album, it actually may be one of their most popular albums. It is no where near my favorite.
