  • Eeee Lad! No caravans at Burrs? -and I had to wait 'till 't end for a HV jacket.

Just not good enough- must try harder!

(How times have changed Eh, Austin?)

  • Changed indeed and not always for the better. I have heard talk that the caravan site is to be extended too!

  • Brilliant video, great to see drivers having it! I think we need a video compliation of the best "Enthusiastic driving on the preserved scene". Although I think most of it will be from the 80's and 90's. They just dont drive like this anymore!!

  • Funnily enough someone commented on my recent video from the SVR Gala that a lot of the spark seems to have gone from performances. There was a reply from someone who had a friend who was a driver who suggested they are told to drive more conservatively to save fuel these days. Glad you enjoyed this little taste of how it was anyway.

  • Corking video sir, particularly with many sequences featuring, what may be termed, 'vigorous' driving! I'd love to be able to see my west Somerset Railway turn on something similar in the next few years!

  • Thanks very much, I have to say having just returned from the WSR that their crews can put on a bit of a show

  • Thanks very much. That August was a memorable month, even the weather was fine. I doubt if we will ever see a line up like that again

  • Austin superb archive footage. It's always nice to open the memories box for watching the films of the past. A big thank you.

    Philippe

  • Merci Philippe pour vos aimables commentaires. Bon à regarder en arrière, parfois

  • Excellent movie.

    Very great job.

  • Thank you, I am pleased you enjoyed it

  • beautiful historical train

  • Thank you for your kind comments

  • What a fantastic video. Cant thank you enough for posting it. The last scene would bring a tear to anyone's eye.

  • Thanks very much, the last scene is rather sad but as we know it wasn't really the end. We are so lucky that so much survives

  • Excellent compilation of shots Austin you have produced a pure classic movie. Where does the time go 18 years just like that!!! Thanks for posting and taking the time to make these videos.

    Many regards Phil.

  • Thanks very much Phil, it's frightening how the time has gone by since this event. I doubt if the line will ever see a gala like this one again.

  • what a gem! the stock is still as recovered from BR too!

also, 35005. beast of a loco, right at home here.

    thanks for uploading

  • Thanks, yes if I remember rightly that stock arrived not long before the gala. I think 35005 appeared in blue at the Lancs too

  • Nice one Austin,i used to visit a steelstockholder right next to the line,as i spent the last 35yrs of work driving artics,it was on the Bury road just outside Rawtanstall,if my memory serves me well,it was Holme Lane a crossing with mabye signal box,and i often saw locos passing,do you know where i mean?

  • Yes, that is the spot where Townsend Fold signalbox is. The second shot of 5407 shows her working away from the crossing. The turn from Bury Road into Holme Lane must have been a tight one with an artic, bad enough in a car. Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed the video

  • Many Thanks

  • You're welcome, glad you liked it

  • Absolutly brilliant footage!!! I'm so glad I live near the ELR because when it comes to galas, they know how to put on a great show!!!

  • Thanks, you are so right, always a great place to visit at galas

  • A great selection you have put in to the making of this video, well done

  • Thanks very much for your kind comments

  • Well it may have taken me 150 minutes to download in HD but well worth the wait. What a brilliant variation in locos and all given a reasonable load to give them a bit of work. Good (for me) to see some Southern locos. Strange we should have been talking about CanPac in blue yestrerday - this must have been just before the repaint. Also locos we haven't had the pleasure of seeing for a while - what a great record of them. And finally an emotive ending with the chalk marks. A superb record. Chris

  • Chris, all I can say is thank goodness you enjoyed it after the marathon download time otherwise I might have had a clout around the ear next time we met! The ELR certainly was a busy place that August.

  • Great video footage Austin. I have some of the locomotives in this film in pictures.

The shot of 2 Jubilees was great and would be great if they could do that agin soon.

But with Bahamas out and Leander the only operational Jubilee it would be a while before the can double head Jubilees.

Once again Great film liked and faved.

    JamesandPeter

  • Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Sadly Leander has now been taken out of service in order to start her overhaul and Kolhapur is probably several years away. Galatea may be the next to appear

  • Wonderful, Austin, but how did you manage the widescreen format? . . . . Alan

  • Thanks Alan. I edit in my usual program, Corel Videostudio then transfer the resultant file into Sony Vegas which has a very good and simple cropping facility and thats all there is to it! Mind you with the length of this blighter you can imagine how long it took to render, won't be doing too many more of these epics.

  • To acw71000

Well, we are all very glad you did. . . . Alan

  • Outstanding footage its vids like that i really enjoy i didn't know that all these locos had visited the elr. like and fav.

  • Thanks, the ELR has seen a huge number of visiting locos down the years

  • Very nice video it was worth to watch 26mins of it, looks a great gala. My favourite clip was the class 40 banked by a 8F superb work

  • Excellent compilation Austin. Happy carefree days. Whilst the ELR has slowly started to rebuild a reputation for quality galas its easy to forget times like that. Amazing that one or two locations havent really changed in the past 17 yrs, except of course Summerseat.

    Mike

  • Thanks Mike, that was certainly an amazing month with so many visiting locos. One odd thing though was the lack of any representative from the LNER, I can't remember now whether there weren't any, or I just failed to capture them. As I mentioned in the reply to Simon, the view from the hill at Summerseat is one I really miss.

  • A superb collection of vintage clips Austin, shame a few were cropped during processing...but a sheer joy to watch...Bob

  • Thanks Bob, yes it would probably have been better for some clips had I left it in the original 4:3 format but I couldn't reduce the file size as much as I could by doing it this way. I know we have mentioned this before but were the loco crews a little more enthusiastic in those far off days...?

  • @acw71000 Without a doubt Austin, everything is now focused on efficiency, and that extra bit of effort that was shown then is very rare indeed these days. It's especially noticeable during Galas when enthusiasts are looking for that little something extra...Bob

  • Superb! The golden age of preservation...

  • Have to agree, that was a very special time

  • Great stuff Austin, how things have changed over the years :P Simon

  • Thanks Simon, the one spot I really miss at the Lancs is the view you used to be able to get from the hill above Summerseat.

  • Wonderful stuff. A veritable feast of steam. Great to see what locos were around in 1993. Burton Agnes, Can Pac, Kolhapur and even the red 46441 which I think looks pretty good. Well done.

  • Thanks, yes the little Ivatt does suit the red livery. She had a few interesting mainline runs too.
