Essentially, it boiled down to the fact that even though it would have been easy to do otherwise they created an operating system that would only run their internet browser. By so doing, they attempted to monopolize an industry. What I find interesting is that many people think Gates is "smart" for the subtle contempt he shows for the government's lawyer. In reality, Gates comes across as quibbling and being obstructive. He didn't help himself.
Yeah, and he should. Bill Gates is a man who's created enormous wealth for himself and many others. Government greed apparently necessitated a way to steal part of that wealth, thus the lawsuit. What frosts me is that MS makes great products that it can't really even advertise like MSE, it's free anti-virus program. They keep them on the QT because they don't want another anti-trust suit.

the problem was that Microsoft was suspect of a monopoly.
using their power of controlling the OS to force out software companies such as Netscape Navi that directly challenged Internet Explorer.
