Patrick Stewart had a minor role in this movie. He played a "baliset" which was actually a heavily modified Chapman Stick (not sure if that scene made it into the movie or was a DVD extra).
David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning
Watching this movie introduced me to the awesome books which I hadn't known about. So I will always have a special geek spot for the movie, even though it isn't the best adaption.
Maybe Alfonso Cauron of Children of Men fame should direct. Besides Star Wars is already the same thing as Dune and even Avatar by James Cameron is the same thing as Dune since Cameron was influenced by one of his favorite books besides John Carter of Mars for Avatar.
@Johnlindsey289 Yea the same story has been used, slightly tweaked, for all of the major space opera franchises since the book came out. Children of Men was a great flick he would be a great director. Terry Gilliam probably would have an interesting take as well.
Gilliam would be good but would you compare Gilliam to David Lynch? i mean both are cult directors you know. Star Wars and Avatar are definitely both Dune rewritten as you gotta admit since they are similar to Herbert's book even the Na'Vi are like the Freman but as literally aliens instead of humans and Tatoonie is basically Arakkis redone.
@Johnlindsey289 Same story, slightly tweaked. Any body but Chris Columbus should direct...he ruined Harry Potter...the only nerd franchise not influenced by Dune. I heard Gilliam was going to direct the first one, but the studio ousted him instead of Columbus. Christopher Nolan could make and amazing Dune remake, or maybe the team that redid Star Trek. Hope they are reading this!!!
This movie is a terrible abortion of an adaptation, David Lynch was a miscast director for such a movie when Sci-fi is not his gig when it could have been Alejandro Jorowosky or Ridley Scott to adapt my fave novel. I can hope the new 3 part big screen Dune movie will do the book justice, besides Star Wars, The Matrix and Avatar are already the same thing as Dune.
yah I hear they're making a remake of doom, which is awesome.. but they're gonna put robert pattinson as Paul Atreides? are you KIDDING me?! *facepalm* I say they should put Ben Barnes instead.
@StackCityEntOfficial I suggest you read something about esoteric yoga, alchemy, neuroloinguistic pogramming and history of religions, specially hinduism, esoteric christianism and islam. It's very hard to understand, that's why the movie didn't succeed comercially. It's the death of the self to awaken what is divine inside us. That places exist within us.
well if you look it up on wikipedia, it looks like a big production company has bought the rights to make the movie and they had a director signed up and everything was going smoothly, then the director decided to quit and now it looks like they are searching for a new director as far as I know.
What do you think of the mini-series and it's sequel? and do you think the closet similar movies to Dune are Stargate, The Fifth Element, The Matrix, Avatar, Heavy Metal, The Dark Crystal, Krull, Flash Gordon, Star Trek and Star Wars movies, Dark City etc.?
@Johnlindsey289 unfortunatly I haven't seen the mini series yet because I just got all 6 books and I want to read them all before I watch them, as far as the movies listed, I think that dune greatly differs from most of those, simply because it's the messiah model.. there is a character with a hidden ability that has a destiny to change the world and so on, and of course there are other similar issues but I find that many of the main themes relate to avatar, unubtanium and the spice are paralels

But there was no God emperor of Dune. That one is the best of the dune saga and they were actually going to make it if this movie succeeded. Dune, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. It was supposed to be a trillogy, but...
it was remade for television !! Lynch complained that he wasnt given enough time or money by the studio... it should be re-made and the director should be given all the resources he needs to make the film. i would go see it.
@leetatron They made a remake in 2000 on the SyFy channel, although they revealed more of the story, it was nowhere near as good as the original 1984 masterpiece.
This is probably the most magnificent sci fi story of all time. The only problem is that it never had a good screen portrayal. I think whoever did Enemy Mine would have made this a good movie *shrugs*. Someone but not David Lynch, its not his area of expertise imo.
Although the final version doesn't really tell the full story, its ambience is what makes it my favourite sci-fi film. It helps to have read the book to follow what is going on. This is my favourite scene, but what happened to 'the Prophecy theme' by Brian Eno? Is this a different edit?
This reminds me much of Michael Mann's film 'The Keep'. Many fans of the original novel in that case are similarly unhappy (though this time including the author), but I thought the ambience was superb.

the water of life is a poison that comes from the worms.there is a prophecy about an out of world man who takes this water of life gains prescience memories, frees all the people of dune and rules the universe many have tried and died offcourse.thats what i remember read the book years ago.
what was in that water and what was the significant of it. educate me someone. also why the worms came out and didnt attack it has been years since i saw this film i was young and didnt get it that much.
don't know what was in the water, but man he saw some CRAZY stuff when he drank it... I think he goes telepathic on them or something...so the wrms don't attack because they know he's "The One" or something like that. NUTS!

I guess the spice mines are kinda like "elephant grave yards" for the sandworms, which is why they protect the spice sands.
I think she auditioned for the role of Catwoman and Michelle Pfeifer got it... so then Sean went on some talk show in the "FULL ON" Catwoman character and talked smack about the movie studios for not choosing her... since then she never really worked all that much anymore... too bad.
Just got done reading Dune tonight. So naturally I'm geeking. I can't believe that the dude from Sex in the City is my boy Maud'Dib. But the sandworm scene I just watched was OK.
Wrong, ALL WRONG, this was horrible... Frank Herbert should've been ashamed of this movie. And doesn't Chani only refer to Maud'Dib as Usul in the book? David Lynch: YOU RUINED DUNE.
halostarwarsfreak13, Originally the version David Lynch submitted was 4 hours long, but the film company woouldn't let that happen, so lynch cut an hour or so off the movie and replace some stuff with this scene. Of course Lynch most likely embellished in areas where he shouldn't have, but the film didn't come out the way he wanted due to pressure from the company in charge.
interestingly, the first version Herbert an et al saw was long, and H was satisfied and happy with it until studios mucked it up. Even less known:weirdly when I first saw the movie at nine years old in the theater in Calfornia what I saw was longer than what was later released in other theaters and on video. So. There is ALOT of weirdness surrounding the release of Dune -- but I loved it anyways, more than V and that is saying something.
This scene is quite different from the book. In the book, he is in a cave when he drinks the water of life. And, he is out for a few weeks. Interesting interpretation of the scene though.
paul does not drink a few sips of the water or life... he has but one drop of the raw water from the stunted maker! he goes into a catatonic state, appering dead, for 3 weeks, not a couple or minutes!
lynch was forced to cut down the movie and replace it with this scene. It wasn't his initial intention to have this scene in the film if I remember correctly.
Bene Gesserith in Arabic means 'the Children of the Peninsula'. The Arabic Peninsula, that is, Jeziret ul Arab.. Yes he constructed a great World, Frank Herbert, the genius.
in the scifi version, it showed that if the spice stopped, the planet would become green, the benijezerts and the emporer knew this from pauls father, and they knew of Pauls coming. Those alien things were evolved humans who abandond their human form to become moving brains:3
It was horrific. I thought that it was as though they'd gone through it and tried to "simplify" it. What it wound up being was a watered-down mess.
I especially hated what they did to the Bene Gesserit . Really made them seem like nothing but a wimpy band of girls. Which of course meant nothing else made a whole lot of sense. Very bad, even the art direction was bad!
That's odd,Frank Herbert seemed to like it very much despite it's departures from the original text .The minisieries in it's attempt at regurgitating precise dialogue from the book was so poorly cast as to make it unwatchable.Lynch had Herbert physically with him on the set didn't he?That should indicate that the "feel" and visual impact of the Lynch movie was as quite close to what the author envisioned.
The Lynch 1984 movie isn't the one that I was referring to, but the 2000 John Harrison, version presented as a mini series by the Sci-Fi channel.
Although IMDb says that both movies are pretty much rated the same I have to say that the Sci-Fi channel version is really abysmal. As I said it was horribly watered down, everything that made the atmosphere so extraordinary in the Lynch version was dumped and now mediocre, like a version of Battlestar Galactica.
You MUST read this book before you die.

Know this. David made it 8 hours, but it was cut to 2hours, thats why it is not as good as it would have been
but what mr Lynch did crete is my favourite SCI-FI sceens ever created.
Its genius.

This scene is quite different from the book. In the book, he is in a cave when he drinks the water of life. And, he is out for a few weeks. Interesting interpretation of the scene though.

That's the long version.... I prefer the theatrical version for this scene... cause of Eno's "Prophecy theme"

Yeah, they totally botched the soundtrack in the extended version.

this has to be one of the best bits of the film, paul takes the water of life and changes the chemistry from a poison. enchanting.

Does anyone know if Francesca Annis plays a big or small role in this film?
Babsfanalltheway 4 years ago
Her role in the film is fairly big, although she gets a lot less to do in the last half hour and kind of fades into the background a bit.

Thanks - I am a fan of FA so I might rent this out.

does she even have a line when they reach the sietch?

An huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge role... She's Lady Jessica...

Just realized something. This all must've happened before dawn or is Lynch play with light; Paul having passed through the ritual.

paul does not drink a few sips of the water or life... he has but one drop of the raw water from the stunted maker! he goes into a catatonic state, appering dead, for 3 weeks, not a couple or minutes!
thelevenbrech 4 years ago
Did you want to see him in a catatonic state for 3 months? who said he was not in the movie.
The book is always better
chickenb0ne 4 years ago 3
The movie itself is a Lynch's vision of Dune, it isn't just an animated book. And for me it's still a great movie.
Yeah, book's always better.

lynch was forced to cut down the movie and replace it with this scene.

No the 2000 verson was horrible, they shouldnt have messed with a good thing.
Zad087 4 years ago
It was horrific. I thought that it was as though they'd gone through it and tried to "simplify" it. What it wound up being was a watered-down mess.
I especially hated what they did to the Bene Gesserit . Really made them seem like nothing but a wimpy band of girls. Which of course meant nothing else made a whole lot of sense. Very bad, even the art direction was bad!
Jayjen35 3 years ago

And the Bene Gesserit became..
Jayjen35 2 years ago
...a bunch of scared and confused girls. Hardly the trained political manipulators and assassins that the universe lived in fear of.
But I will say the movie, The Children of Dune was much much better.
