  • This is /still/ my favorite rendition of the song. No questions asked, no paragraphs in the comments section can change my opinion ;)

  • i really love this performance up until 2:08ish

  • is this lola from bully or just a girl of the same name?

  • @CautionLlama Yup, Phoebe definitely voiced Lola, same girl.

  • I honestly don't get the hate. It's a gorgeous song. She sings it beautifully. Just because she's not belting it out like crazy doesn't mean it isn't good. She's got a very pretty voice and her acting is subtle

  • i'd better see her,

    than LOLA....

    hahaha lol

  • Her emotion is so honest and pure. It's obvious she is feeling the song. The acting is brilliant.

Her voice, though... it just... wasn't the right song at all.

  • yeah i love phoebe but this wasn't good. . . .

  • This is awful. She's flat, she cracks, and her acting can be compared to that of a high school student in their first show.

  • Cassie Levy is soooo much better. She can actually have some sound when she belts. Phoebe just has nothing powerful or special. And was extremely flat.

  • @hardyboy963 I didn't really believe the song when Cassie did it, though. Her voice was amazing, but it just felt off. I just moved back home from college, and when I listen to Phoebe's version or Krysta's, I can relate to the emotions they display. And as far as musical theater/cabaret music goes, I think the portrayal of the song's meaning is the more important thing. I mean, if you like Cassie's better or get something I don't from it, that's cool. But that's why I like this version.

  • @hardyboy963 I TOTALLY agree with you. I don't really get what the fuss about Phoebe is. Sure she's really pretty, and has cute dimples, but her voice just has no depth to it. She doesn't know how to support her breathe, and her sound comes out airy and flat a lot of the times. Not that I'm an expert, but I am in musical theater and have taken voice lessons for my entire life. It confuses me as to how she's gotten so far. She should just stick to being an actress.

  • @hardyboy963 in most cases I prefer someone who can portray and emotion strongly even if the vocal isn't that great. I love Cassie bc she is an excellent vocalist but I didn't really feel much from her rendition. Phoebe puts a lot of emotion in her performances. Like i said I like Cassie's voice and i'm not doubting her incredible talent, i just feel more connection to the song in this performance. i agree she wasn't spot on the entire time lol but her acting was very good imo.

  • so sad this song(any verson of it) isnt on itunes

  • @awurz13 yes it is! or it is now.. not sure when you posted this comment lol but it's on their album "Our First Mistake" - Natalie Weiss sings it and it's absolutely gorgeous.

  • I'm pretty sure it's not legal to be that gorgeous and that talented.

  • She throws her arm up when she sings those high notes. I do that too...of course it could be an acting decision.

  • Was she in spring awakening? she looks so familiar!

  • @armassmann yes,she played anna and understudied ilse

  • @eightyeightsugarrush She understudied Wendla too, actually.

  • @TheGloryOfSpring i know that now:)

  • @armassmann 30 Rock, she played a pregnant teen in an episode in season 3.

  • You are amazing!!!!! a true gift to watch

  • she kinda looks like rachel mcadams...

  • @julianamliu word

  • there is no other performance i have seen of this song that is quite as passionate. none of the other versions do it justice, i think.

  • She's trying to add too many riffs... This is not a riffable song (well, it is, but, but not as much as she's doing it)

Her belt hurts my throat... It's so from her throat.

  • lol some people might want to kick me for saying this, but she would be an amazing Ariel in the Little Mermaid!!!!! lol

  • @junebug62795 true

  • I love this song and the performance.

  • i've watched this video i think 30 times in the past 2 days. phoebe is incredible.

  • I watch this video over and over and over again. I love it and Phoebe. But I love Kait and Brian even more, they are truly amazing.

  • amazing. wish it was on itunes.

  • Absolutely beautiful. I love this song. I'm a freshman in college and I feel this way right now. Thank you Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk for writing such a true and beautiful song.

  • everyone should sing like her. I like her much better than the stereotypical musical theater singer.

  • She's amazing and this song is amazing :D

  • awh..not the strongest solo performer...but i adore her.

  • fierce.

  • This is AWESOME!

  • Love Phoebe in this song. I have a total girl-crush on her, so I might be biased

  • Laura Osnes does a better singing job...but I really like Phoebes acting!

  • laura's jaw moving bothers me though. it seems... forced?

  • @lexa926

It's artificial vibrato, is why she does it haha.

  • I saw Phoebe in Spring Awakening and thought she was great. Met her afterwards, and she was a darling. However, watching her solo performances here...I'm unimpressed. In this song especially, her belt seems painfully harmful, and her softer bits, under-supported. This is going to sound harsh, but if I didn't know she was famous, I'd think she was an amateur...and still be unimpressed.

Just an opinion, don't assault me!

  • i was actually blown away cause i didnt think she had it in her, shes very good

  • I don't think she was ill. However, I do think she was VERY nervous.

  • I love her voice in this

  • i love phoebe strole... end of story.

  • One of the things I love about Phoebe is her acting and passion when she sings. Sure this wasn't the best she's ever sang, but her emotion pulls you in so deep that you hardly notice it.

  • Ive actually been listening to it a lot lately and I was a bit harsh, but I still think she is screaming in parts. The soft part is very nice though and I like the emotion in her voice, but the belting is just not good or healthy sounding. But that's just my opinion and everyone is certainly entitled to their own.

  • i love this song, but i'm not impressed with this performance at all. she was just screaming and there was no acting at all. she could have put those higher belted notes in her mix and it would have sounded so much better. i give her five years before her voice is totally gone if she keeps singing like that.

  • i beg to differ completely phoebe has been doing this a while. also from what i can tell from the recording she has impeccable power although it's not classical technique, she sounds beautiful.

  • just wondering.. why do you think that? Do you know her or something or have you heard something. im always interested to hear these things

  • I met her at the stagedoor for Spring Awakening awhile back, and she was incredibly sweet.

  • Yeah so can't stand her belting...it's just not phoebe! But the soft parts are stunning.

  • Phoebe Strole = amazing

  • Ok, LOOOOVE her voice, but she doesn't show the confusion and ...sadness in her face, and I dont know if I have really ever seen her do that....

    but beautiful voice.

  • take it back, I saw it more as the song went on, but I still missed it in the beginning, ...sorry bout that

  • Phoebe is pretty, has a pretty voice, and is singing a pretty song.

    Prettiness.

  • I have been waiting for this video ever since I heard Phoebe sang this song and it did not disappoint. I can relate so so much to this song, and Phoebe sang it beautifully, as I knew she would. I have chills!

  • This is so pretty!!

  • Yeah. PeaceKaitlin, I was referring to the fact that I was watched this piece develop and be workshopped through the freshman experiment. I know it's from Tales from the Bad years, but it was written as a result of an experiment.

  • Sorry about that! I thought you were referring that to the fact that it was from the Freshmen Experiment. Sorry again!

  • Hi Nikki! good to hear from you again. You've got us - this song is from the Freshman Experiment...we've since shoved it into TALES, with just a little bit of shame and nagging doubt... anyway, good catch. :)

  • Oh the freshman experiment. Beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • This was inspired by the freshman experiment. on the kerrigan - lowdermilk site, lyrics are listed under freshmen experiment.

  • A classical brilliant voice and award winning smile :)

  • Laura's version still holds my heart, but this one is great too. I just love this song, and Phoebe really acts it out well; she can bring anyone to tears. And while I prefer Laura's "How to Return Home", no one trumps Phoebe's "Not a Love Story". No one.

  • I LOVE PHOEBSUS!

  • Phoebe is amazing. End of story. I love this rendition.

  • obsessed.

and the lyrics are so so perfect.

  • work

  • So, so, so beautiful. And intense.

  • God, that girl can book-end her songs brilliantly. So pretty

  • There are such great renditions of this song out there, but this is sooooo heartfelt. The actor in Phoebe shines through. An amazing and beautiful performance.

  • Thanks so much for posting! I've been waiting to hear Phoebe sing this since I first heard it a while ago.

  • Everything about Phoebe is stunning.

  • Beautiful voice!

  • "Your bare feet sliding on the old wooden floorboards

Home just as you left it, but still you're shaken"

Only things that went through my head when I went back home the first time after going to college were those two lines. I looooove Phoebe's version of this song! Thanks so much for sharing it!!

  • Reaffirms my love for miss strole.

    dear kait and brian,

I am upset with you that you kept this from us for four months.

    sincerely, stageready

  • Makes me wonder what other Phoebe greatness have they been depriving us of?

  • I agree. This rocks. Stop the hoarding!!

  • holy COW.

wow. i don't have the words.

    <3

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS! I love love love love it.

  • way to make me cry.

    this is beautiful
