I really liked Lex back when he was good he may of gone dark anyway but clark not trusting him sped it up amazing how lies can turn love into hate good video good song though its hard for me not to think of saw when i hear it lol.
I beleive it was some episode near the begining of season 5. Clark learned that Lex had got people to kidnap his parents and Lana, just to see how far Clark would go to save them. Little did he know back then that Jor-el had taken Clarks powers so learned nothing.
Nevertheless, Clark found out and ultimately drew the line on thier friendship. The loss of Clarks good influence in his life was one of the many factor which led to Lex's downward spiral and path to evil.
That would be a MUCH BETTER motivation than having Lex become bitter at young Kal - El / Superboy because he caused him to lose his hair. Google Silver Age Superboy & Lex Luthor sometime & see.
The falling out between Smallville Clark & Lex was because of a mutual lack of trust as well, & the loss of Clark's influence.
It's almost a Greek Myth. George Lucas couldn't have done better in showing the transition of Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader.
@knoxvilleguy2 I agree. As Lex Luthor said himself, "In life, the road to darkness is a journey, not a light switch." Smallville embodied that saying perfectly.
@Scoonertuna - It was MORE than 1 factor. Both of them had cause to distrust one another. Although it could sometimes be PAINFUL to watch 2 people's friendship ( W / I thought was very real for a tv series ) dissolve into mutual distrust & even hatred. I have to confess I thought that Michael / Lex had the more complex role. W/ Michael / Lex left, I gradually lost interest.
@knoxvilleguy2 I know! And the writers decided to kill his character off in season 8! i was like, WTF?! I was really upset when they brought him back in the finale. Yeah, Rosenbaum did an excellent job, but he wasn't the real Lex Luthor! Just some Frankenstein, created with the best parts of his clones.
Smallville was always about Clark and Lex. Granted, at some times, it focused more on Clark, but the point is it was supposed to be about the two of them.
@Scoonertuna - It seemed strange to just kill Lex out - & - out coldly, because he's a part of the Superman / DC Universe. Lex was / is suposed to be " Yin " to Superman's " Yang ". I didn't really watch the last season of " Smallville " much, if at all. It seemed rather " meh ", blah & pointless. Watching his descent towards the " Dark Side " was enthralling, albeit kind of tragic because you know THIS W / NOT END WELL. A Lex clone, you say ? Holy....... !!
@knoxvilleguy2 Yes, I Lex clone. I mean spring for something original people! It’s like the new writers that came on board after season 7 stopped trying to be creative. Also, it wasn’t just Michael Rosenbaum leaving that caused the show to falter, though it played a big part. Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and most of the writing team left after season 7 as well.
@Scoonertuna A clone..... Cliche, cliche, cliche, just like the " Good twin / Evil twin " thing ! ( W / they also used with Bizarro Clark ). Weren't Gough & Millar part of the team that did 1 of the " Spider - man " movies as well ?
& Hollywood is running VERY LOW on creativity, & has been for a while.
@knoxvilleguy2 Yes, they wrote story for Spider-man 2. Hollywood runs low on ideas because they don't want to do what's creative they want to do what's cheap.
@knoxvilleguy2 There are some instances where television can be both good, fun and entertaining. Smallville, up to season 8 was all that. I also enjoyed Heroes and LOST.
@Scoonertuna - I liked Stargate SG1 & Atlantis, as well as the " reimagined " version of BSG. Robert Picardo from Voyager & SG Atlantis appeared on Smallville. The guy who played Galen Tyrol AND the actor who played Felix Gaeta on BSG had guest - starring roles on Smallville as well, so they got some very good acting talent.
@knoxvilleguy2 I think the tragic friendships bring out the better stories. Clark and Lex, Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent, Professor X and Magneto, Peter and Harry, etc. They all had really good stories surrounding their friendships and eventual animosity towards each other.
Actually it was the end of Season 3 where Clark and Lex start on the downward spiral... when Lionel gave Clark the key to lex's room where he had all that information on Clark and his family Clark said at the end of the episode "I didn't do it for you, I did it because it's the right thing to do... this friendship is over!" then walked away. Then Lex got Jason fired from Smallville High making Lana believe it was Clark... The start of season 5 was when it all hit the fan...
@nwothunder Actually, Lex and Clark never had a friendship. Lex has been pretending to be Clarks' friend since the Pilot Episode when Clark lied about how he survived the car accident. Lex's friendship is just his cover to investigate Clark. He never loved Clark, he only loves the power he thinks Clark has.

@Scoonertuna - Interesting. The dynamic between Peter Parker & Harry Osborne was just like Lex & Clark.
Film & TV depends a heckuva lot on re - imaginings, reduxes & predigested ideas - when they're not doing
" reality tv " type crap. Better special FX, crap acting, marginal character development. That's why I like classic TV.
