  • I remember buying like 100 of the small flying cars and putting lasers on them the upgraded 1s that is, it was funny...never got round to finishing this game tho, i Admit it was awesome so was Warlords 3 Darklords Rising at the time WOW!

  • this is bad....as in well good ;)

  • damn i miss those good old turn-based strategy games like jagged alliance 2 and this one...

  • Does anybody know something about the current status of this game? I mean some time ago I read some pages that this was about to become an open-source 4 fans, but so far not even the google was capable of helping me to find any reliable source.

  • There were very, very few moments in my life where I was genuinely scared. Spotting an alien and hearing this was one of them.

  • .........FIRE!!!!!!

  • The best UFO game ever these newer UFO games(wich was actually suposed to be X-Com games as well)never truly stuck on me in the same way!

    For example you cannot destroy buildings(there´s nothing more fun than to bring an entire building crashing down on some aliens "heads")!

  • The intelligence of the music reacting to the action was amazing for its time. Hell, given that most games have given up intelligent, reactionary ambience for linear, scripted nonsense, this is STILL amazing for the current time.

  • @Coillscath it's also because non-linearity such as this gave... I mean gives still a different and unique feeling to each new game ! That's the beauty of it. Reminds me of the Daggerfall manual. "You are the one telling the story".. I'm going to get wet-eyed if I continue *sobs*

  • The original XCOM was awesome - but to be honest this was the better game overall. Yea - I wasn't a big fan of dropping the full global scale for the megacity - but everything else was on the whole better. No diss to the original game though. This was created a lot later obviously and had the advantage of more time to refine mechanics and better graphics.

  • AWESOME music. Makes me wanna go and play Apocalypse again! :D

  • I wasn't much into PC gaming in the '90s (I was too busy having a social life and doing the things "normal" kids do), but a friend bought me the X-COM bundle on steam.

    Holy hell why isn't gaming this good anymore.

  • Great track for a very good game. Hearing it always made me nervous. The only thing this track is missing are sound effects of gunfire and screams (of my troops getting slaughtered) Good times:)

  • this music is pure awsome, just like the whole game

  • Is that seriously the cmbot music? I had a no sound version. I didn't know it was THIS awesome! Holy! Fudge !!

  • @Templayer

    UFO aftermath has up to 1.4 patches, UFO aftershock has 1,2 and is extremely bugged (but also for me the best one in the series), and the UFO Afterlight has 1,6 version, and is the msot polished (but i dont like the chars, and mars. Not to mention there is no char renaming...)

  • Can this tune be downloaded somewhere?

  • Man I remember playing this is 6th grade, like 14 years ago. This was so sick, and its still badass today!

  • It's funny so many people hold the X-Com series so dearly. I'm not sure what it is, but it's strange that these rather obscure games are still so loved. I too have always loved these dang X-Com games, the one I played the most was UFO Defense - I sadly lost the disc with Apocalypse and Terror from the Deep on it so UFO Defense is all I have left! I always thought these games had such a creepy feeling to them, more so than lots of so called "horror" games do...maybe that's just me though.

  • @Shintsu2 It's mostly because they're unique. Aside from Jagged Alliance 2, there are very few good turn based tactical games. It's all arcadetized strategy - it's rare that all you have is one squad of troops. That and it's really well done overall, the horror just being one aspect of that.

  • @Shintsu2 I think it's the way everything is honestly so damn dark. It's bleak, it's grim, it's just you and a bunch of aliens and some terrified civilians.

    Apoc turned it into an action movie in an awesome, absurd way, though. Jetpack troopers dual-wielding plasma swords? Hell yeah! Chainguns with EXPLOSIVE AMMO, ALSO DUAL-WIELDED? YES PLEASE.

  • @Shintsu2

    Nope it's not just you.

    The vibe effect is that you're contantly on the defensive and just dreading the moment when you enrage the alien menace enough that it deploys a strike force against one of your bases! :D

  • KILL THEM ALL!

  • Ah... memories....

  • thanks for that shootanputan, but theoretically shouldnt the cd work with dosbox?

  • yes dos box works with cds.

  • sadly... i doubt that anyone will ever make a game as good as this was. it was way ahead of its time. it was nicola tesla, da vinci, einstein, jonny depp, niel armstrong and luke skywalker all rolled into one... PLEASE BRING OUT A NEW XCOM!

  • try ufo aftermath and laser squad nemesis and tell what you think.

  • holy crap... nemesis looks cool...so i got the demo...it is cool...now i want the whole game but must go were no south african has gone before to get it... ufo aftermath also looks cool but i hear bad reviews about it... is it worth it? cause every one compares it with xcom and says it falls short, xcom is the godfather.

  • I personally like ufo aftermath. Over all ufo after math is a good game. Try Gammersgate to get ufo triogly (aftermath, afterlight and aftershock) for $20 a good bargain and I thikl they have laser squad nemesis.

  • @shootanputan

    Ufo Aftermath was good, but i loved UFO AFtershock the most, it is perfect. With mods i mean :D . BUt still. Afterlight is like polished, but the characters are more cartoonish (ie extremely slim compared to the Aftershock real ones)...

    Too bad the Aftershock, with extreme amout of content (even msot races and stuff) is also the most bugged... cause the firm got bancrupt and was buyed by someone others who did do Afterlight, but they didnt do patches for Shock.

  • @MrDeadmoss Oh, they are making xcom... but not x-com. THe difference is horrifyingly sickening.

  • @MrDeadmoss It was the Chuck Norris of videogames!

  • @MrDeadmoss Why you said that, now they are making a crappy FPS....

  • @MrDeadmoss they tried that. and my god interceptor and enforcer were worse than death, so bringing out a new x-com is not the solution

  • @MrDeadmoss luckily for you, firaxis are stepping up to make an x-com in the original style

  • shootanputan, i would love to know how you got x-com working right with Dos-Box, believe it or not there are whole forum threads dedicated to this topic.

    You would be helping a huge community by letting us know how you did it :-))

  • Here is how I got it to work.

    1. get dos box and vdm sound and install them(both are available on their website)

    2. DL free from games win or abadonware paradise.

    3. Fallow Dos box tutorial and it should work with no problem.

  • thanks m8 :)

  • Hi all, i downloaded this game via steam but i still get stuttering sound.

    Is there something else i need to download e.g any patches??

  • Idk but I still have my old disk I use dos box and vdm sound.

  • If you guys have stuttering music / effects use

    bloscksize=1024

    with

    prebuffer=18

    works perfectly with 0 sound lag and like 1 stutter every 5 mins.

  • Actually blocksize=1536 works better.

  • NOTHING beats spotting your first Anthropod and hearing this rockin', scary tune suddenly burst out of your speakers. If only the original X-COM had this kind of early reactive music...

  • The difference in music makes sense. In X-Com you didn't really know that much about Aliens so the more creepy and scary music fit. In X-Com Apoc, you're used to Aliens, so it's like "Oh here come the Aliens again! We better get ready!"

  • They have this for sale on Steam. It plays perfectly.

  • X-COM Apocalypse works brilliantly in DOSBox, but I cannot get the music working. It's disabled by default, and turning it on freezes the program.I presume it's trying to load the music file.

    I've got the music file, I just don't quite know where to put it.

  • Got it working. Assuming you mount it at R:\ using DOSBox, you should then edit the Xcom3.cfg file located in the installation root. This file should contain a pathname. Copy the music file from the original disc or elsewhere (about 300MB) to the installation root, and change the above mentioned pathname to R:\.

    Again, R:\ is the root of the installation, so the music file is located at "R:\MUSIC" and not "R:\Program Files\XCOM3\MUSIC". This, because the program refers to the CD path.

  • I'd love to be able to play apocalypse I have dos box and xcom and xcom tftd but I can't get apo to work any help? I'm not so good with dos box :(

  • Yeah, I forgot to mention I'm using a configuration file. The config I'm using is:

    core=normal

    bloscksize=4096

    prebuffer=12

    sbtype=sb16

    It's a pain to load this manually every time, so I use a .bat file like the following:

    "path/to/dosbox" -config "path/to/config.file"

    This is what works for me, but let me know if it helps. I'm also assuming you already know the basics of DOSBox.

  • No i don't know anything about dosbox. I downloaded a pack that works with mordern computers, so it was all set but they didn't have it for xcom apo just the first two. I have xcom apo just can't play it :( lol and its the only one Ive never played! hehe. thanks for the info tho.

  • This music's thrilling to fight to in-game. :D

    Stuff just exploding around you, walls coming down, bullets flying, zinging, and pinging against shit, and grenades going off all go nicely with this playing.

  • About that emuator

    I use Microsoft virtual pc with win 98 and it works almost fine!!! Everi 1ce in a while the sound gets full fo wery loud static, but this lasts until you enter an infanty fight or leave it.

    Also this is just i of severalcombat music tracks i X-COM

  • Oh shit, I didn't notice this at all, I played the game in DOSBox, without music, just AOOOGGHGHHSSS and UUGH, and ROOOOOARGHHHH and EEEEEEEEEEK, but this music acompanied by THAT UP THERE might have been awesome-er.

  • i've been longing for x-com nostalgia lately (been trying to get my original disc working with DOSbox but intro movie has choppy sound, no video and exits to DOSbox when finished. i'm not the best with PC's...) so i just watch some vids ;)

    also tried the Laser Squad Nemesis demo (turn-based, and pre-plan battle orders gameplay) from the makers the oldschool X-COM, but the seeders for the full game seem dead...

  • I found it by searching online. Just look for "Download X-Com Enemy Unknown Full Game Free." I can't remember the exact site.

    I just did another quick look for it, but can't find the site I got it from. Sorry man, I know how you feel, LoL.

  • If you want to have Apocalypse work on XP, I suggest you Sun's VirtualBOX.

    It works very well, also with sound.

    I actually use VirtualBOX in my XP SP3.

  • Go buy it on Steam, makes it easy.

  • Oh, and the game doesn't run when I use the "Run with VDMSound" context menu option. The black box pops up and the last messages is: "Batch File Missing!"

  • Strange stuff dude, VDMSound worked fine for me, although movies stuttered occasionally.

    To be honest, the best option is to spend $5 and get it off Steam. It's damn worth it.

  • I got the whole set a weekend or two ago---Steam was selling the whole pack for $5!

    Now it's back up to the usual $15.

  • I am *DESPERATELY* trying to get Apocalypse to work with sound. I finally got it working in Windows XP, without DosBox. Supposedly it can work in DosBox, too, but I'm not ready to go through another laborious and tiring set-up process.

    Has anyone gotten this to work with VDMSound in Windows XP?

  • I have. Sounds work pretty fine, some distortion can be herad at times but nothing bad.

  • Almost forgot about this music..

    Psiclone side effect? XD

  • X-Com Apocalypse it the best strategy game so far. :)

    "Don't get hurt!"

  • Awsome music! Where can I get it as MP3/OGG or WAV? Thank you! I am playing this game on Steam today. Even after 11 years It is still awsome!

  • Do You want me to help you download this music from YouTube?
