McCain is a backward, deluded man and shouldn't have any political power or influence at all and it was a godsend that he didn't become President in '08! The time to change DADT was YEARS ago, I don't undestand these peoples fealings. Just because you are gay does not mean you sudenly can't pilot a ship or aim a gun at an advosory. Gay people have been in the police force foe decades anyway, is being in the military any diferance when the **** hits the fan? You pick up a gun, you follow orders. As a side note, this presents an interesting juxtaposition. McCain think that the Uniform Code of Military Justice ought to deal with people’s sexual lives. McCain acted on his sexual preferences as a Naval Officer, committing adultery. Adult is treated as a crime under UCMJ Article 134 (conduct bringing discredit on the military). Would the good Senator would be willing to stand before a court martial for his own clear violation of a much more defensible sexual prohibition?

That isn't flip-flopping. That's a conditional statement: - the "the day that the leadership of the military comes to me and says 'senator, we ought to change the policy'" is an IF. As in, IF the military leaders tell him to change DADT, he would consider it. However, he said that people think it's working. So clearly, that day hasn't come.

@roxymartini I'm not following you. The senior military leader is ADM Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He made the statement this month. Thus, McCain said that he would consider changing it when the miltiary said so. After he made the statement, the senior officer in the military said change it. McCain now refuses to consider the change. The conditions were met and he has changed his position.

flip flopping? McCain states that top military leaders have told him that the policy is working and therefore he agrees it shouldn't be repealed. In the clip from 2006 he states that if the military leaders would tell him to repeal the policy then we should strongly consider it. He never states that we should repeal the policy or that he believes it should be repealed, in both cases he is simply putting trust in our top military leaders. That "*ONE* military officer" you refer to just so happens to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, i.e. the ranking member of not only the ENTIRE U.S. Navy but ALL of our armed forces. So his statement should by McCain's own words garner some respect and consideration on McCain's part instead of being cavalierly dismissed out of hand. Also, he's not alone, according to internal polling in the military the majority of those serving would like it repealed. lol
