Obviously there is a music taliban out there dictating what tempo should be played by a given piece. It is a pity that - not unlike the real taliban - they are not willing, or incapable, to give sound arguments for their judgements. It's just "too fast". Well, the excrement of a bull on laxatives is just "too fast".
By whose standards? About 600 people in that hall obviously had no problem with it. And I'm convinced old Fritz himself wouldn't have minded. The piece allows one that much freedom. I've heard it played even faster.
It's, like you more or less indicated, a matter of opion. Seems to me he is doing something with the music where the majority is following a treaded path. That is the problem with well known pieces: once a "standard" is set it becomes the holy scripture. I think the piece itself gives that much leeway. I'm sure Fritz doesn't mind.
why does everybody say "she", this is a BOY playing. With this piece he stand on a international concour for violoist under the twelve. There was a selection from 500 to 50, and he was by the 50 last one. Now he's 13 and plays much better than this.
Well, if you know that much you could perhaps enlighten us and tell us which one and where? By the way, it has already been noticed that he played one wrong note. It that is what you are referring to your insight and observation equal the quality of your critizism: poor at best.
everybody's arguing over that one wrong note that i didn't even hear! i'm envious to the musically gifted with ears which can still identify that one wrong note amidst the grandeur of this masterpiece marvelously played by a young boy! not to mention that i cried while listening to him play, it's like every note pierces through my heart ='c
bravo! you did a great job kid. keep on inspiring others. to his parents, take good care of your child. i wish i also had a son like him. shine on! :)
This kid has some major talent =D. He is sooooo musical and his vibrato is so amazing O.O I hope that when I finish working on this piece I'm that goood. Since I'm 14, its nice to watch ppl who r close to my age play to see what they felt and how they interpreted the piece =).
My son learned from his performance of this video. Thnaks for posting! I like his interpretation. We listened so many different ones, but I like this one is best. Only 11 years old, that's wonderful!

Any idea which key? It sounds like one has the knowledge but it's pretty meaningless without any specification, don't you think? BTW, if you're 11 and you are given this piece, that you even never have heard perform, to study and you can play it like this in front of a paying audience of 600 plus after 5 months, with one wrong note, then you must have some musical insight, don't you think?
That kid is my hero. :) I have been studying violin since I was 5. I worked on this piece when I was 16! Of course I never have really applied myself or taken violin too seriously...this kid certainly has!
just a few intonations problems, but overall really good ! I really enjoyed his playing. this is one of my favorite to play. but this kid was 11 in the video, i was playing marry had a little lamb at 11. he's amazing.
You jump to conclusions without knowing anything. Yes, he has to put in a lot of time to attain this level, but however much pressure you put on a kid you can't make him do this against his will. Moreover, define life. Watching TV all day? Goofing through school and ending up a looser? Even if he never gets to be a violinist no one can take away the experiences he has had, nor the thrill of being able to create something beautiful for yourself and others.
Two fallacious assumptions are made here: 1.violin playing, or music making in general, isn't fun 2. parents (can) force their children to become proficient on the violin. As for the first., the one very important condition to be able to play the violin at all is to enjoy it.
As to the second; what would be the motive of the parents to even try to force their kids? Ambition? For what? Success? Wouldn't be better then to force the kids to become good at baseball or football? Either that or become a wizzkid?
This is the deal: the violin takes a tremendous amount of money, time and dedication from the parents. The material returns for these investments are at best very, very dubious. As for the chances of success. It is a matter of simple math: how many kids are learning to play the violin? Millions, for sure? How many top violinists are there? Twenty at most. How many non-soloists are making a decent living out of the violin? My guess, less than a million. You figure out the odds.
I still don't agree. On review I noticed one note too low in the double stops of the allegro. If you screen this life performance you will find a few more, perhaps. But if you analyze the life performances of violinists you'll also catch a few off notes. Even Vengerov has been known to be off, Very rarely, but still.. And so it goes for the ones you mentioned as well. Yes, even the great Heifetz. It is one of the things a violionist just has to keep on perfecting and will never get perfect
I have asked a professor of the violin at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague to take a listen to avoid a yes-no discussion. And she too disagrees with you in this. Of course he is not to be compared to the great violinists but as far as she is concerned there is not much wrong with his intonation. Certainly not in a general kind of way, as I understand you stated. So it's a matter of opinion and the only way to be sure is to take an electronic measurement.
Considerando la edad del ejecutante, es una muy buena interpretación. Sin embargo, deberá ajustar su afinación (que es dudosa en muchas partes)y perfeccionar la técnica del manejo del arco.
I beg to differ on the intonation part. Considering the fact that no violinist has a perfect intonation all the time (it is just impossible humanly speaking) I think there wasn't much wrong with the intonation. I agree he needs to work on his bowing technique. And, yes, there was that one wrong note. But who cares? The public obviously didn't.
can i have the other performances of this piece? thank you so much! i'm learning it now, and i'm far older than he is :) i would like to listen more :) and this boy is just plain good =)

Yes she indeed has quality, but everyone (read the comments) talks about "prodigy". I think she needs to practice etudes, scales and less difficult pieces first. A really good teacher knows this. Have you heard her play Zigeunerweisen? Her intonation is not how it should be. I don't understand her teacher, does he/she want to show off with her?
Yes I went back andnd watched several of Valerie's performance actually... And SHE IS A PRODIGY! She doesn't have perfect intonation so as everybody here, but she does have quality that other kids RARELY HAVE. if you think she's not special, you wouldn't mention Valerie on other people's site. It's a shame you have to put somebody down to make someone else look better... :p
Nobody is putting anybody down. It has already been acknowledged that she has quality but I question the decision of her teacher(s) to give her pieces she is technically nor musically mature enough to play. And it cannot be denied that she has to work on the basics: scales and etudes.

What the typographically challenged "paulscandyshop" means by "in a different key" and "weird notes" is a lone G# in the solo violin part, in the recitative of the praeludium. The recording is indeed in e minor.
