Adoration of the Taliban is the true madness. There are too few troops to ensure security, because the Bush administration just doesn't give a damn. We need to increase the troop presence. But not just that, we need serious attempts at reconstruction and investment.

Oh please, Afghanistan is completely winnable. Iraq is unwinnable, but Iraq and Afghanistan is apple and oranges. The yearly death toll for Nato and Afghan civilians are matched by US and Iraqi Civilian casualties in a month.

No problem for the "long haul" bit, it's worth it. And guerillas don't always win. ETA has not won, the Aceh guerillas didn't win, the Shan guerillas in Myanmar never won. The IRA did not win; they negociated a peace instead.

I agree that the dependence on air power is a terrible mistake on NATO's part, because of the potential for large civilian deaths. I wish leaders other than Bush or Blair had been in charge, who would know to put in much more troops so they could fight on their own on the ground. And who would know to work harder to reconstruct Afghanistan and stop corruption.

It is a tragedy to see young people throw their lives away to the Taliban's evil cause.
