I can't believe people try to take the V offroad without an engine guard and then wonder why they smashed their pipes or rip the oil filter off. Get the engine guard it's worth every penny!
Don't be too proud of getting in ADVrider--its a big site, but full of pretentious egoists, who love failed water crossings, photographing food, and flipping the bird. Most are freakishly liberal, and think that only BMW's and KTM's are worthy, and jap bikes are for children/mentally deficient.
Be fair--isn't that Wee superior to the GS in every way that counts? And at about 1/3rd the price. And with 1/2 the displacement.
@jmshaw357 We didn't really make the homepage, this was just for a laugh. The V-Strom is great, but we did have some problems with its low ground clearance. Damn near smashed the header flat on terrain that was no problem for the GS.
For the trails we were riding in these GS vs. V-Strom vids something like a KLR would have been best.
@blackt0wer Conservatives exist on ADV, but they are in a small minority. I was invited to leave by one of the mods because they don't encourage my 'type' (conservative) at ADV. I'm still there, but I have less interest/respect for the mods/inmates/political tone.
@halfthrottle ya it just liked utah and i can remember a road like that with abandon railroad tracks i cant remember either though if i had to guess i would say its up by clear creek off of highway 6
@anderberger I'm impressed. I looked it up and it is indeed Clear Creek, Utah. We rode there on a dirt road. I have a few other vids with 1200GS vs. V-Strom in the title. They were all filmed in the Spanish Fork Canyon area. It's a dual sport motorcycle playground up there.
@halfthrottle thanks ya there are a ton of off road places in the spanish fork canyon area i like to go on them with my chevy blazer but i would really like to have a dual sport bike im gonna try and get one this summer just need to save my pennies
What is difficult and time consuming for these bikes is easy for a real dual sport lol. Get on a KLR and I bet you'd have no problem. Even easier on a WR250R or KLX250S
not only but i have videos and experience enough to say it. if we talk about xrv 750 or tenere ir cagiva its ok but this new bikes are a crap (mine too.)
heavy, plastic, electronic, not so high .. and more.
@sakartelephone The V-Strom is a 650... But I guess you are talking about a 650 single... but then if you go for a Yamaha 660 single such as the XTR/XTZ they have no real weight advantage over the weestrom... So a DR650SE then? Yeah, that would make sense. Maybe if they knew what their bikes before trying it their lives would have been easier. Not saying they should not have tried, just that I am sure if they tried again now it would be a breeze. No machine trumps experience.
Very nice! Oh, and neither are dirt-bikes, but going any distance on a dirt bike makes my ass hurt just thinking about it. That Weestrom and Beemer you can ride for hours to get to those remote places in style. They are a bit heavy though, for sure.

so what´s next? a jump with a goldwing?
ok, i do have a dl-1000 too, great bike for long distances and incredibly comfortable (seat, wind, noise etc) but simply to heavy for offroad.

@halfthrottle I have no problems with you guys, but I do disrespect many of the inmates at ADVrider. Too bad the few ruin it for the many.

@anderberger Keep your eyes open for a used KLR650. They are usually pretty cheap, and can take a beating.

That's a 650 not a 1000. Easiest way to tell. 650 has one exhaust 1000 has 2.

Looks like you are having a blast! A former V Strom owner and a current GS rider; both a great. Ride on!

Nice, but I thinkthe F800GS would suit you better as its much less bulky & a lot lighter. Still BMW & still awsome.
