Amazing to see this ad, especially having heard his songs like "I'm The Slime" that rail against TV advertising and crass commercialism in general. I probably saw this ad when I was young and never gave it a second thought. I didn't hear Zappa until I was about 11 or 12 and didn't get him at first, then at 14 I heard "Montana" and "Dinah Moe Humm" and became a fan instantly. Had a nice chat with Steve Kenneally once and he said he really treasured the period when he was Frank's guitarist.
That's an incredible combination of music and visuals, and a mandatory stop for those who dismiss Zappa's more "random" works. This is brilliant, and quite mesmerising.
amazing ish...i lloved this commerical as a kid...the sing-song melody....didnt know till years later it was Zappa....who I was always curious about....i came up in jazz...and his name was always bandied about as a jazz cat.
And I'm telling you that my father worked with Frank for over a decade and that he still keeps contact with those close to Frank and that THEY say Frank never did anything more for the Ren and Stimpy show then the Pope's voice.
That is why I worded my original comment that I wasn't sure, then worded my second comment that I was absolutely sure. I looked into it.
stardark, that rumour has been going around since the episode aired, because of Zappa's affiliation with the show and because many artists do uncredited voice work on cartoons. It does sound A LOT like Frank in certain parts, but I think that's just the California Red Lands intonation that Frank shared with the shows creators.
I've always been curious what it might look like! Great!
By the way, you can find the track on 'The Lost Episodes', titled 'The Big Squeeze'.
Here are the liner notes by FZ:
"This is the actual track for a Luden's Cough Drop commercial that won a Clio Award in 1967 for Best Music for a commercial. A freak in an ad agency who was an animator, Ed Seeman, who came to the Garrick Shows, did the pictures and recruited me to do the music."
FABULOUS!

wow the speech at the end was SOO redundant haha but that was um... interesting

@flautist02 : instead i was struck by how the speech is as much as _twice_ slower than we'd expect it.

stardark113055 2 years ago
He did the voice of the Pope on Ren and Stimpy. I'm not sure about the Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy song.
thegirl44 2 years ago
thats his voice captian stinky wizzel teeth or tooth....lol...;)...
stardark113055 2 years ago
No, it isn't. StinkyWhizzletooth is a combination of Burl Ives samples and the creator of the show imitating Burl Ives.
FZ only voiced "The Pope" in the Powdered Toast Man episode.

im telling u id know his voice and thats him doing stinky wizzel tooth.

Zappa also did a quite remarkable jingle for Remington Electric Razors, I think for a radio ad ... it's worth looking for.
