Yes it's a dialect, and many of the words are very different. You are correct on both counts. As for religion, I think there are more variations in religious practice or perspective than religion itself. But those variations can become quite important.

I am sick and tired of this fabricated history. Bantus are not indigenous of Somalia, they have been in our land for over a century. They were brought to Somalia by Arab slave traders and Arab slave owners who moved to the South of Somalia. Arabs and Bantus are not native Somalis they are people who moved to our land and many of them moved back to their countries after the war.

First our language would have had Bantu influence and secondly they would not have sickle cell anemia. Somalisoulja87 is right. Majority of Maay Maay speakers are Somali ethnic people. The Bantu were brought to Somalia over a century ago from Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania through slavery. Most slave owners were in the South of Somalia where the Somalis spoke Maay Maay. After they were freed most did not move away and continued to live among those Somalis. A good percentage went to Mogadishu and they speak Somali. In Tanzania Somali Bantu were welcomed back and given land.

I think you could find people expressing a wide range of views about Barre, but it is well-documented that Bantu villages were exploited by Barre, and destroyed by those that followed. Barre's ideology sounded good, but the practice was different. Even under slavery, some black Americans moved up, this does not negate the impact of slavery on the majority.

There are actually at least 3 languages in common usage in Somalia--Maay Maay, Zigua and Somali. All people born in Somalia can be seen as Somalis but, unfortunately, the majority ethnic group often persecutes Somali minorities. My dad's best friend was Somali Bantu, they served on the same Brigade in the Somali National Defense Army, our both families interacted on daily bases, eat together on holidays and we never felt them different. I believe the best Somalis for friendship are Somali Bantus. I totally think it is not true to say they were persecuted in Siyad's era, they were many Somali Bantus that held high government posts.
