@SpookyKitaro I Iceland, they have used geothermal energy for decades. Imagine Mankind ripping the very Earth under his feet with Thermonuclear Weaponry, used unrestrainedly! That is the warning of the film, i a sciencey-fictiony concept.
Man, I used to--and STILL--love the hell outta this flick. Its a shame that "Crack In The World"/"Magma", "The Colossus Of New York" and "Day Of The Triffids" never got a proper DVD release (there ARE "Triffids" DVDs, but they are all sub-par). Eugene Lourie did some things with miniatures that only rivaled Tsuburaya-sensei at his peak (see "Krakatoa", and THIS flick). Plus, the music will hit you in your chest and stay there (especially if you first saw this as a kid, long ago).
Movie rather prophetic in regards to what is happen with BP. Listening to the scientific jargon including caps, shafts and so forth along with total abandonment to logic because of money, I hope the BP incident in the Gulf of Mexico does not have a similar conclusion as this movie! The whole movie can be seen under Google videos.
It's amazing, really. There isn't any reason this movie SHOULD work, ditzy as the premise is, but the director gives it all the gusto he can, actors and screenwriter play it straight and with great energy, and the MUSIC is fabulous. You won't see many other films where five cars rolling down a dusty road blast you with the import of a literally earth-shaking event. I wouldn't mind seeing another film pay an "homage" to this soundtrack.
I don't know about you folks, but I need a cigarette. Was it as good for you as it was for me?
This was on several sucessive July 4ths when I was a kid. We'd get home after the fire works and watch the late movie. It was July 4th - a special day- so stying up late wasn't that big a deal. Normally bed was 9 pm.
And yeah. I loved the movie. Especially the part where one guy falls into the lava pit and floats up as a skeleton. I saw it again 20 years ago. Despite my love it's a stinker.
The blond actress is Janette Scott, whom I think was so incredibly beautiful. She just never quite got her due, which is a shame. A back-story rumor is that one particular scene in the 2nd half of Crack in the World originally had her running for her life in the underground complex, and coming out of her shoes. She was thus to go the rest of the movie barefoot. This was ruled obscene by the powers of the day and hence altered in the script. I bet she would have been a real honey shoeless.
This movie is beyond stupid. The crust lays on top of the mantle. Its far less dense than the mantle, a better description is that it floats on top. There are so many holes, tears, breaks and other ruptures in the crust that its hard to count them.
Ah, I loved this movie when I saw it when I was young back in the 60s. Remember this is 40 years ago, they hadn't even heard of plate tectonics yet I don't think. Or it hadn't been verified yet at least. And if you check into the 'super-volcanos' or 'traps' of Yellowstone, Siberia and India, 'cracks in the world' CAN be big enough to certainly f--k up the planet on that scale. Too bad it looks like they removed the movie from here.
The movie is full of junk science. Don't lecutre me about geology. I've been to Yellowstone and knew about the ring valcano there long before it was popular. The idea that a sudden crack would destroy the world is stupid. There are cracks everywhere. There is right now a rift in Africa thats splitting it in two right now. The crust litterally floats on the surface of the mantle. Its a fun movie but its geology is faulty.
The crap science in this movie ruined it for me, even if we ignore the fact that there are already cracks in the earths surface, a big crack caused by a nuclear explosion would NOT cause the earth to split in two, because of a little thing called gravity, and it is scientifically impossible for a piece of the earth nearly the size of the Indian ocean to float off into space and form a new moon.
@alan8653 ......Yup, me too!! The effects are PURE thunderbirds-stingray....and the concept is SO "off",......(the actings pretty good!) but DAMN, there is something so watchable about it!! I also LOVE "the core".....Another "love it or hate it" movie (but newer).....
@fiddleup Everytime its on I cant tear myself away, When Dana Andrews says I will keep reporting to the end seems brave even if its insane. Why does he have to maintain the recording equipment? Ha!
I recorded it off cable in the early 1990s on VHF, and I got a DVD of it at a Chiller Theater Scie fi convention a few years ago. Love the incredible special effects by the great Eugene Lourie and Alex Weldon (GORGO-1961, KRAKATOA:EAST OF JAVA-1969). The ending will really scare the crap out of you and blow your mind at the same time! Feels like it could really happen. Watch a DVD of in in surround sound with a powered-sub-woofer (!).
I bought this on DVD - it was a copy from a VHS obviously, but oh MAN I love this movie!!!!! One of my favorites when I was a kid in the 60s. Ahhh the goold old days!!
So glad the BLU Ray has now been Cracked.

CRACK IN THE WORLD will be on DVD in the US at the end of July!
Great comment about the BP spill. Why on Earth don't this lot just tap a volcano?

I agree, @wingnutrules -- I don't care how smart all you are, with your "This is inaccurate" and "This ignores the fact that ..."
I think this is a great movie! So there!

It's just a movie. Sheesh RELAX. Who cares if it's not 100% scientifically accurate.

I first saw this movie in the theatre in 1965; plate tectonics was in its infancy in 1965.

Is now but the movie is over 40 years old so maybe they did not know as much back then.
By the way the DVD is great so much better than my bootleg copy.

This is one of those movies that would get played on a UHF
station at 2 in the morning and if you saw it, it would stick with
you for the rest of your life. Especially with that music.
You'll hear the word MAGMA more times in this movie than in
any other in history.
Excellent clip-- thanks for posting
