What bothers me is that it is not just the bath that the baby is [literally] man-handled for but even for being dried off as well. This nurse was not remotely gentle, tender or kind to this baby in any way..... and it was all caught on video! So what would it have been like if a parent hadn't been standing there? Would she just gone ahead and drowned her and then suctioned and resuscitated and just told the parents that she had trouble breathing--blaming it on random fluids? grrr.

I'm sorry to say that this was pretty much my first childs same experience. I was in an overseas hosp. I was still being stitched while they bathed the baby (across the room). I will say she then was bathed daily for her first year of life as that is what I saw, was 'taught'. I did'n't bathe her quite like that though. It is Europe and they do, do things differently. My last two were waterbirths, and had instant baths durring their delivery and never NEEDED a bath, afterward. ;-)
I have a 5 week old newborn. She was in her bed asleep when I clicked on the link to see the video. Then I got up to go to the bathroom.
I didn't expect it to start playing. Hearing the cries of a baby this way made me panic. I ran for my baby to check on her. Then when I saw it wasn't her I realize it was the computer. It made my fight or flight kick in to rescue this baby. I cannot finish the video. It so disturbs me!!!!!

That came because I stayed calm and documented what happened and then brought it to public and hospital attention through this video. If I would handled the situation as you suggest by putting down the camera and grabbing the baby; it would of brought about nothing more then my physical removal from the hospital by security guards and possibly seeing my baby bounce off the floor when attempting to take her away from the nurse (what a video that would of made).

a letter dated 11-19-2010 from the head of the hospital mentioning this video specifically ,apologizing for this incident and assuring me that the nurse was fired and that this kind of treatment was intolerable and that steps have been taken to assure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

i've seen babies been taken to the sink to get a bath a different hospitals but never like this. You could hear him gurguling with water in his mouth. A lot of old school nurses who "know it all" do this. Most nurse bring a basin of water to the baby. And at my hospital we never use the hand soap we wash our hands with on any patient infant, child, or adult. If they let a person in the room to record this I'm sure they would have let the person bathe the baby if they asked.

Wow this makes me want to head home and bathe that baby myself. I actually refused to let them bathe my son until the next morning. And I only let them because the nurses would not touch him until he was washed. I still didn't like it.

I know it wasn't a mean giggle, but just a 'giggle due to the newborn crying. i don't think he knew it was wrong, prob his first child and thought it was just how it was done. I'm sorry to say that this was pretty much my first childs same experience. I was in an overseas hosp. I was still being stitched while they bathed the baby (across the room). I will say she then was bathed daily for her first year of life as that is what I saw, was 'taught'. I did'n't bathe her quite like that though. It is Europe and they do, do things differently. My last two were waterbirths, and had instant baths durring their delivery and never NEEDED a bath, afterward. ;-)

I have a 5 week old newborn. She was in her bed asleep when I clicked on the link to see the video. Then I got up to go to the bathroom.
I didn't expect it to start playing. Hearing the cries of a baby this way made me panic. I ran for my baby to check on her. Then when I saw it wasn't her I realize it was the computer. It made my fight or flight kick in to rescue this baby. I cannot finish the video. It so disturbs me!!!!!

That came because I stayed calm and documented what happened and then brought it to public and hospital attention through this video. If I would handled the situation as you suggest by putting down the camera and grabbing the baby; it would of brought about nothing more then my physical removal from the hospital by security guards and possibly seeing my baby bounce off the floor when attempting to take her away from the nurse (what a video that would of made).

a letter dated 11-19-2010 from the head of the hospital mentioning this video specifically ,apologizing for this incident and assuring me that the nurse was fired and that this kind of treatment was intolerable and that steps have been taken to assure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

Very sad, I am sorry to hear that about your daughter. I have never done this and made sure my nurses bathed her right. They just gave her a good sponge right in front of me. i've seen babies been taken to the sink to get a bath a different hospitals but never like this. You could hear him gurguling with water in his mouth. A lot of old school nurses who "know it all" do this. Most nurse bring a basin of water to the baby. And at my hospital we never use the hand soap we wash our hands with on any patient infant, child, or adult. If they let a person in the room to record this I'm sure they would have let the person bathe the baby if they asked.

Wow this makes me want to head home and bathe that baby myself. I actually refused to let them bathe my son until the next morning. And I only let them because the nurses would not touch him until he was washed. I still didn't like it.

I know it wasn't a mean giggle, but just a 'giggle due to the newborn crying. i don't think he knew it was wrong, prob his first child and thought it was just how it was done. Not thinkin the nurse was being to rough, esp since he was infront of her video taping it, i cant stand nurses who get to 'comfortable w.there jobs and act in this manner, its horrible!

@NaturalJaLease13 Actually the babies are born with vernix on them and this substance should be rubbed into the skin. This is absorbed by the skin and it acts as a medium for colonization of the babies skin with beneficial microbes.This leads to less cradle cap and rashes.
