You have any focus issues in D7000? Mine Back-Focuses a lot and I've had to AF-Tune it. But I've been told that it's a manufacture fault and I need to send back to Nikon
@leo140485 Only happened with an old 50mm f/1.4 AF-D (works fine with 10+ lenses I've tried, though). Try other lenses, and remember that the D7K has individual and default fine focusing adjustments.
I love sifting through all these comments lol. You guys get so wound up over canon and Nikon. The truth is this, canon is no better than Nikon , and Nikon is no better than Canon. It's what YOU are most comfortable with. They both have different features for different needs and shooting styles. You need to base your decision on what camera best fits your needs and what feels better in the hand.
extremely biased, 7D doesnt touch it? Its more rugged more faster and responsive, 18MP sensor same dynamic range as the NIkon. It's ISO performance is a bit less cleaner than the Nikon at 6400 and higher. You talk like the D7000 is the best one out there just because you have one.
@Cman775 Actually I recently got to play around with a 7D and I was shooting in a dark corridor I involuntarily laughed out loud at the ISO performance on the 7D. I was literally thinking "this is a pro crop camera?" And remember that the D7000 isn't even suppose to be competing with the 7D, it's competitor on the Canon side is the 60D. And the thing about DR just isn't true. Youtube search Nikon DX vs. Canon APS-C, there's a comprehensive video showing the DX sensor has superior DR.
@Cman775 I've used both extensively and the only pro for the 7D in my opinion is that it has more fps. But it is *much* worse under low light. Try the D7K for an extended period of time taking pictures of dark theater plays as I do, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Hell, not even the D700's full sensor is as good under very low light...
Hey Matt, thanks for all your great videos. On one video, you compared all the best DSLRs for a $1000, but didn't compare each company's models to each other. I want it mostly for amateur cinema short movies. Which do you think is the best: Nikon D7000, Canon EOS T3i, Canon 60D for me? Do you think paying extra to move up to the Canon 5D Mark II price range for me?
I'm new to DSLRs but I would like to learn & grow with the camera.
CNET said Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 is great for videos.
It is one of the best, that's very true. but this thing just killed the REAL mid range camera which is the D300s. It's good, but in a long run it will hurt nikon.
@SafuraAlizadeh at 14 your pretty smart, there are othe good lenses, Canon "L" series really are fine lenses and would put one on my Nikon, but like Nikon Pro glass, they are pricey.
D5100 Is a better value for money as an overall package with great specs.
You can get 64GB SD-Cards so no issues there.
The K-5 Has the best dynamic Range (any sensor), better colour recognition and better ISO Noise reduction.
The D5100 Has better High ISO performance without any suppression applied
Sony Alpha 580 Has the best colour recognition out of any Crop sensor, it is almost 24bit (23.8bit) which is incredibly impressive, it's also a lot cheaper than the D7000
But when we pull our files into to camera RAW for manipulation, we have found I can pull out slightly more detail out of over\under exposed areas whilst maintain detail with less noise, the D7000 was producing noise and even some strange artefacts where the K-5 had no issues at all pulling out detail, I'm sure you've seen the K-5 has 14.1EV of info per RAW as I know you are a fan of DXO (or you were until they decided to place the Pentax above the Nikon)
Also if we're talking amazing pro level Crop DSLRs here, should we mention the 645D? Which makes both of our cameras look average, It has an amazing 77seg metering (I don't quite think its on par with the D3x 1005-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix II though) system on top of the new proven SAFOX IX+ AF system, I have also had a play with RAWs from that too and let me tell you, the detail you get from that 40MPx beast is beyond reproach and the price considering its a med-format is very good too.
@nsasikanth Fair Enough, I haven't shot a JPEG in 2 years so I forgot there are people out there still shooting with it, I guess I've never seen a reason for JPEG, all my shots need to be in RAW to get all the detail out of them. Plus when shooting JPEG's your not making the most of the powerful sensors they have.
@nsasikanth Ahh OK, I find Canon Pro level DSLRs (in the same price range) are better if you don't want to do post processing yourself, Nikon's really shine when you want to manipulate the shot I recon, just from playing with RAWs from different cameras and taking the same shots with various cameras in JPEG and RAW. But I see your point, I think it's quite valid, obviously not for everyone, but for those out there who want both it's handy having dual SD Card provisions.

I think they (Nikon) have the ability to incorporate better video like Canon but are waiting to release the D8000 just to keep stringing people along. Its just like the computer industry.
Nikon is like the best company ever.. i have d5000 with battery grip n 55-200mm lens... great combo.. but if i get the nikon d7000.. ima get the battery grip with 35mm lens... MMMM mini d3s
I would appreciate any comments you'd give to improve my skills. and also do you happen to know a good software to make presentation for Imovie doesn't do the job. sir! please click my name and try to check the compositions and everything and tell me if i'm doing a good good so far.
@ArtoftheImage thanks for all the info!!! i was kinda halfhearted in getting this but after hearing you I will definitely get d7000. why is it I always have to crop my photos printing 8X10? I hate it for I compose my photos the way they should be printed without cropping. I am an emerging photographer in the philippines and I always follow your reviews. Would it be ok if you check my photos and please do comment honestly so I would know my areas of improvements. Thanks in advance!
mate, while the d700 may be the best for the money, it may not be the best. The 7D is still a couple of notches ahead in frame rate, AF and movie mode, not to mention grip and that canon has faster lenses (you may not want them, but it has em). Much of what you said is pretty damn subjective and because you didn't hilight this in the video you are being misleading to potential buyers. The main thing about buying a camera is how it feels. All this other shit is so similar it's quite irrelevant.
What about 60D? Its much better interface so I think its a prefrence thing. I love Canon lenses and by getting a Canon crop sensor I can work up to a 5D which is the best!
I've been doing a lot of research while saving for a $1000-$1500 DSLR. I narrowed it down to the D7000, the Canon 7D and 60D. (the articulated monitor on the 60D is a strong selling point for me.)
I went to a camera store, and told the guy what I wanted to look at, and he said "You want the D7000. It's the best." It may be the best of the 3, but it feels horrible in my hand! The grip is too shallow & awkward... but the 7D fits like it was molded to my hand. Pure love at first touch! I want one!
Thank you for the info! You just put my mind at ease! My plan was to get the D700. Just sold my D90 today and wondered if I really needed to do that for video. Sounds like my instincts were correct. Thanks!
the D7000 is just calling my name...but i want to wait and see what else will come out in 2012. But at the same time i want no NEED the D7000 because it's just such a great camera,
@tek5828 You are both wrong :), 60D can take stills whilst in video mode. Nikon has a nice LV/video trigger/button, but it is not the reason to choose D7000 over 60D for videos, because the vari-angle LCD alone makes a huge difference for a serious movie maker. Many fall for those marketing gimmicks such as continuous AF in video mode (unlike Sony SLT) or 5% better high ISO (which is ridiculous).
@tek5828 fanboy? :)) I just don't like to see such misinforming reviews on youtube. D7000 is a nice camera, I don't argue with that, but it has it's flaws and it is NOT " THE best crop sensor DSLR on the market today". I think Matt is a little overreacting, leave it for D400 ;).
@alreacon - I disagree. The Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII beats the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS. The Nikon 14-24mm f2.8G is better than the Canon 14mm f2.8L, which is saying a lot as a zoom beats a prime! Regarding the 85mm, I prefer the Sigma 85mm f1.4 to either the Nikon or the Canon, as do many people.
@ArtoftheImage i think you are wrong about the NEW canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS mark II. you are comparing the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII with Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS mark I. And comparing those two i agree with you. Nikon > canon. but the canon mark II is WAY better than the nikon VRII. there's no data of the canon mark II on "dxomark", but you can find data at: dpreview and the-digital-picture. take a look. cheers
@ArtoftheImage omg the canon 70-200mm f2.8 is is a beast i swear you used a bad copy because i heard you say you thought the f4 was better. Also the sigma is a bit weak due to 1.4 vs 1.2
Took a series of night street shots a while back and my Canon shooting friend asked how i got the night shots so grain/noise free- they were stunned to find out that the noise performance far exceeded that of even their 5D mkII.
Hey Matt, I bought Canon 60D, Oh man it is AWESOME! Absolutely loving it! I'm not dissapointed that i bought a Canon :) Bright, sharp, smooth images what else do I want? I think nothing :)
This is cool to know ive got the best bang for my bucks camera, i just bought it recently due to your recommendation videos mat and im well pleased with my purchase :)
Canon 7D is still the better cropsensor, it outperforms D7000 in all areas except high ISO performance. Better glass per dollar also in the Canon range right now, more choice. Nikon is lagging, unfortunately.
@nutcs - I wouldn't say it outperforms the D7000 in all areas. AF is on par. Build quality is very close. D7000 has dual card slots which the 7D doesn't. D7000 has better image quality and the better sensor. To top it all off, the D7000 is several hundred dollars cheaper, making it the best crop sensor DSLR on the market today.
@ArtoftheImage To be fair - 7D AF is faster (more responsive); noise performance is very similar and I don't see any 'real' difference in RAW images, both are horrible in low light at ISO 6400+ ); 7D burst mode is vastly superior; D7k continuous AF in video is a joke (noisy and hunts too much); I like 7D's ergonomics and menu better but it's just a personal preference just like dual SD slot - I prefer CF...; D7k is far from perfect (even live histogram is lacking) - it is cheaper but not better.
@ArtoftheImage Are you for real? You wouldn't take a 7D over the D7000? The D7000 feels like a toy, its tiny, god help Nikon if they think its replacing the D300. High ISO is irrelevant, honestly, when can you say that you've shot at ISO 6400 or above, in video OR stills and been happy with the results, let alone published or used/ sold the image? The 7D is superior in my opinion; better video, higher FPS, Compact Flash drive slot, better construction, access to L glass. The K5 is V.GOOD too!!!!
@Meatmiester I don't think Nikon ever intended for D7000 to replace the D300s. It is meant to go up against the 60D and when you compare, the D7000 is generally better (apart from video). I do have to say that I do think that as a whole video/photography package the 7D is better camera, though the difference isn't that great when you compare the price difference. As for Nikon Canon glass, both are about the same, some Canon lenses are better than Nikon and vise versa.
I am interested on your review of the flash right though. Wondering how you like it and would like to see the photos you took with it. In the market for a diffuser
@TeddyImSuff - Nope, didn't forget it. I can own 4 Nikon D7000's for the price of the 1D MkIV, and the Nikon D7000 beast the Canon 1D Mark IV by a significant margin on DXOMark for sensor scores.
@ArtoftheImage - im not sure if i get you correct. i dont doubt that the d7000 is cheaper, but you say that the d7000 sensor is better than the 1Dmk4? not to mention high ISO? also, you base your rating on a webside that claims that the d7000 sensor is better than the 5dmk2. correct me if im wrong, but i dont think so...
and dont get me wrong here, im a nikon shooter myself and i dont try to hate on nikon in any way, but i think that dxomark rating isnt the most clinical out there.
Also the K5 is the top of the range DSLR for Pentax, whilst the D7000 is mid range with the D400 coming soonish and I would guess a 7D replacement. The 7D I would arguably say is currently the best DSLR but not by much, which shows how good the D7000 is with the difference in price. The D7000 nearest competitor is the 60D, which I think loses in a direct comparison. In the end though I think it all comes down to how you feel with the camera, in the hand. Variety is the spice of life :o)
I think you might have stirred up a bit of a hornets nest. I am a Nikon owner so am biased but do like to see other companies doing well. The Pentax K5 is a great camera, I love the feel of it and it takes a great photo but I would never buy one. The K5 AF is better than the K7 but isn't as good as the D7000 in all conditions. With Nikon it isn't just the camera, the peripherals make a big difference, Great lenses, Amazing speedlite system.
@chakracannon97 Same here. Though if this wasn't my first DSLR I may have opted for the D7000. Still learning but I can see the features it adds to be useful.
@chakracannon97 I know where you are coming from. I wanted to learn the basics etc, and if I could afford it would want something like the X100 as well, or a 4/3 like the sony NEX cameras. Maybe after I get decent shooting with primes I'll get one to replace the point & shoot.
@JHVH1 I am not a sort of supporter of the Sony NEX series. But I do think micro 4/3 are the future, with the likes of Olympus and Panasonic pressurizing competitors. I would like an Olympus EPL-2, but I wouldn't have use for one with a X100. And primes are an excellent way to start, I have to agree.
@TommyPh500d I think the mic input is as good as the 5D Mk II, so yeah i think it is better than 7D. And the dual card slot is very useful. however, if you don't have help with video, you might want a Canon 600D or the Nikon D5100. Just a note. I would love a D700 for photos, but I have to make do with my D5100. just saying. :D
I'm trying to decide between the D7000, K-5 and D7. Interesting that you mention D7000's autofocus system being very fast. There is a review at imaging-resource, where af speeds are measured under "performance". According to those numbers, K-5's af system is even faster than the 7D's.
At the end of the D7000's section, they conclude, that "Autofocus speeds were slightly slower than average for a prosumer SLR..."
What's your take on that? (I can get all three bodies at the same price)
@qwertzwasd - The auto focus speed on the D7000 is excellent. Best thing to do is try all 3 bodies out for yourself. Personally, I wouldn't buy into the Pentax system due to the limited and often over-priced lenses, plus the fact that the video abilities are limited. The Canon 7D is a very nice camera, and if you can get it for the same price as the Nikon D7000, then that's a good deal!
@ArtoftheImage Great video! Very useful as usual. What about the continuous Video AF performance? Do you think it would perform High Speed Aircrafts tracking well? (like at Air Shows or Airport Spotting, with Sigma 70-200mm F2,8 II DG MACRO APO EX HSM and Nikon AF-S DX ED 18 - 105 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 serie G in particular). Thanks in advance :-)
@kapkaplui - Not sure what an ISO buff is, but high ISO image quality is certainly a factor in determining image quality and a camera's over-all performance. I love the D7000 for the total package, which of course includes it's excellent high ISO performance.
I just got this camera. I love it. For all the reasons that you mentioned plus one. I really like the controls layout. With the two wheels and the dual mode knob on the left. It is very easy and fast to get to everything I need without going into menus.
Yeah sure. Only The Pentax K-5 got higher on Doxmarks and dpreview. I wonder how you would explain this! Since the D7000 "trumps" the K-5, not everyone share your vain opinion.
Seems like the only company you give 10/10 full time is Nikon. I wonder if its cognitive biases in the work or your on a payroll - or I' wrong. Technically the k-5 is better as a consensuses. Prove me wrong.
@Forkroute - First of all, the Pentax K-5 did NOT beat the D7000 for high ISO image quality. Second of all, the D7000 is $400 cheaper than the K-5, not an insignificant amount of money. Thirdly, I'd much rather have the better line of Nikon lenses available than be stuck with Pentax's rather small and often over-priced offering. And last, the K-5 video is not competitive. So, for the price, I stand by my reasoning that the D7000 is the best Crop Sensor DSLR on the market today.
@ArtoftheImage you said : "Nikon has better line of lens". So you are rating the camera by the quality of the lenses. In my opinion Canon lenses are 1 little step ahead Nikon lenses. take the new 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2 for an example... So by considering the "lens line" on this opinion i would tie Nikon and Canon bodies. Considering just image quality i totally agree with you, the Nikon D7000 is the best croped sensor body in the market. and considering lens line canon>nikon.
@nomadson - No, I'm not rating the camera by the lense, but a camera system is certainly a major factor when considering buying any given camera. It's a LARGE part of why I wouldn't buy a Pentax K-5.
@nomadson - In my opinion, Nikon zoom lenses are quite a bit better than Canon zooms, and many of the new Nikon primes are better than the Canon equivalents as well.
@ArtoftheImage Many Canon lenses have no equivalent alternatives from Nikon - like 50L (f/1.2 and f/1.0), 85L, MP-E 65/2.8 1-5x Macro, TS-E 17L etc. + you can use all the Nikon lenses on Canon body via adapter (like 14-24 for landscapes :)). Nikon lenses are considered better optically mostly because Nikon has better in-camera lens aberration correction. However, if you're using a decent post processing software with automatic lens correction profiles then it doesn't really matter.
@ArtoftheImage As a D7000 user, I unfortunatelly disagree about the hi ISO. The bluish blacks on D7000 (D5100 is the same) images about 3200 (including) are big weakness. The noise is generally low, but when you don't have a real black on the picture, especially when you shoot night city scenario on vacation, what is it good for? :/ Pentax K-5 and Canon 60D has real dark blacks, there is almost no color "deviation", especially comparing to D7000's bluish blacks :(

@TyphoonJaa - You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I don't agree.
The Nikon D5100 is not better value for the money. The D7000 is WAY more camera for very little extra cash.
Dual cards slots are better than one slot with a higher memory card. If you don't get that, you've never shot professionally.
The Pentax K-5 is nice and the sensor is the same as the Nikon D7000. That said, the Nikon D7000 has better high ISO than the K-5.

@TyphoonJaa i think we can get 64GB SD cards instead of 32GB x 2 cards, but with d5100, we cannot get
1)RAW on one card, JPEG on second card
2)Duplicate of photos on the second card.
So, buying a 64GB SD card is not really a solution, i think.

@TyphoonJaa I still find a lot of people shooting JPEG, and also people requesting for both RAW and JPEG.
Not everyone is interested in post processing playing with RAW.
Some want to take the capabilities of DSLR inbuilt processing.
So, i personally feel that this is still a requirement, out in the field.
Never mind, you can use RAW, i can use RAW+JPEG.

I think they (Nikon) have the ability to incorporate better video like Canon but are waiting to release the D8000 just to keep stringing people along. Its just like the computer industry.

Thanks in advance!
benedictsalvacion 8 months ago
mate, while the d700 may be the best for the money, it may not be the best.

Smalskin 8 months ago
I've been doing a lot of research while saving for a $1000-$1500 DSLR. I narrowed it down to the D7000, the Canon 7D and 60D. (the articulated monitor on the 60D is a strong selling point for me.)
I went to a camera store, and told the guy what I wanted to look at, and he said "You want the D7000. It's the best." It may be the best of the 3, but it feels horrible in my hand! The grip is too shallow & awkward... but the 7D fits like it was molded to my hand. Pure love at first touch! I want one!

Some how nikon feels weird in my hand. Hence I chose canon.

Hello Matt! Nice to hear your recommendations for the D7000.
But I think that many of us anticipate the D300s replacement, probably the Nikon D400.
It's gonna be a lot better than every other DSLR on the market in its price range.
Are there any real facts about the specs or release date from Nikon?
vcbabis 8 months ago
Have to agree with your review, The d7000 is simply a brilliant camera.
MrBlofeld007 8 months ago
Not really...
I have been comparing the D7000 against the D90 for a few days now, and the results are far, far from impressive for the D7000.
The D90 noise performance from ISO 200-1600 is better than that of the D7000. Hard fact to swallow for me after buying the D7000.
Given the price difference, the D90 is a much better option. I will continue testing, but as of now I think I will sell the D7000 and keep the D90.
atamola 8 months ago
Thank you for the info! You just put my mind at ease! My plan was to get the D700. Just sold my D90 today and wondered if I really needed to do that for video. Sounds like my instincts were correct. Thanks!

jjlwis 8 months ago
Number 9. you can take stills whilst in video mode by pressing the shutter button, then it quickly switches back to video mode. (can't in 60D)
Number 10. to switch to video mode on the 7000, pull a nifty finger trigger, on 60D, you have to turn a dial around whilst holding a button down
tek5828 8 months ago 7
@tek5828 - Good points... so 10 Reasons it is! :-)
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago 5
@tek5828 You are both wrong :), 60D can take stills whilst in video mode. Nikon has a nice LV/video trigger/button, but it is not the reason to choose D7000 over 60D for videos, because the vari-angle LCD alone makes a huge difference for a serious movie maker. Many fall for those marketing gimmicks such as continuous AF in video mode (unlike Sony SLT) or 5% better high ISO (which is ridiculous).
0ecka 8 months ago
@0ecka fanboy (using words like "ridiculous" and "marketing gimmicks") -- so the only pro 60D you have is its twisty screen?
I agree tho, why not use manual if your shooting video?
tek5828 8 months ago
@tek5828 fanboy? :)) I just don't like to see such misinforming reviews on youtube. D7000 is a nice camera, I don't argue with that, but it has it's flaws and it is NOT " THE best crop sensor DSLR on the market today". I think Matt is a little overreacting, leave it for D400 ;).

@0ecka yeh agreed. still I do LOVE the D7000 so I can sympathise.

canon beats Nikon in lenses with:
1 macro 100mm f2.8L is
2 telephoto 70-200 f2.8L is
3 portrait 85mm f1.2L
4 landscape 14mm f28L
canon lenses are beasts
alreacon 8 months ago
@alreacon - I disagree. The Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII beats the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS. The Nikon 14-24mm f2.8G is better than the Canon 14mm f2.8L, which is saying a lot as a zoom beats a prime! Regarding the 85mm, I prefer the Sigma 85mm f1.4 to either the Nikon or the Canon, as do many people.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago 5
@ArtoftheImage i think you are wrong about the NEW canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS mark II. you are comparing the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII with Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS mark I. And comparing those two i agree with you. Nikon > canon. but the canon mark II is WAY better than the nikon VRII. there's no data of the canon mark II on "dxomark", but you can find data at: dpreview and the-digital-picture. take a look. cheers
nomadson 8 months ago
@nomadson - No, I'm comparing the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS Mark II against the Nikon 70-200mm VR II. I think the Nikon is a better lens.

Canon 7D is still the better cropsensor, it outperforms D7000 in all areas except high ISO performance. Better glass per dollar also in the Canon range right now, more choice. Nikon is lagging, unfortunately.
nutcs 8 months ago
@nutcs - I wouldn't say it outperforms the D7000 in all areas. AF is on par. Build quality is very close. D7000 has dual card slots which the 7D doesn't. D7000 has better image quality and the better sensor. To top it all off, the D7000 is several hundred dollars cheaper, making it the best crop sensor DSLR on the market today.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage To be fair - 7D AF is faster (more responsive); noise performance is very similar and I don't see any 'real' difference in RAW images, both are horrible in low light at ISO 6400+ ); 7D burst mode is vastly superior; D7k continuous AF in video is a joke (noisy and hunts too much); I like 7D's ergonomics and menu better but it's just a personal preference just like dual SD slot - I prefer CF...; D7k is far from perfect (even live histogram is lacking) - it is cheaper but not better.

digitalportugal 8 months ago 2
@digitalportugal - The Nikon D7000 beats the Canon 60D hands down, and I'd take it over the 7D too.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage Are you for real? You wouldn't take a 7D over the D7000? The D7000 feels like a toy, its tiny, god help Nikon if they think its replacing the D300. High ISO is irrelevant, honestly, when can you say that you've shot at ISO 6400 or above, in video OR stills and been happy with the results, let alone published or used/ sold the image? The 7D is superior in my opinion; better video, higher FPS, Compact Flash drive slot, better construction, access to L glass. The K5 is V.GOOD too!!!!
Meatmiester 8 months ago
@Meatmiester LOL my camera can shot at ISO 1,900,900 yours can't mines better. You all sound like a bunch of kids arguing over who's dick is bigger.
Meatmiester 8 months ago
@Meatmiester I don't think Nikon ever intended for D7000 to replace the D300s. It is meant to go up against the 60D and when you compare, the D7000 is generally better (apart from video). I do have to say that I do think that as a whole video/photography package the 7D is better camera, though the difference isn't that great when you compare the price difference. As for Nikon Canon glass, both are about the same, some Canon lenses are better than Nikon and vise versa.

I am interested on your review of the flash right though. Wondering how you like it and would like to see the photos you took with it. In the market for a diffuser
cojones78 8 months ago
i guess you forgot the 1DMk4, it's an APS-H size sensor (so its no FF)
TeddyImSuff 8 months ago
@TeddyImSuff - Nope, didn't forget it. I can own 4 Nikon D7000's for the price of the 1D MkIV, and the Nikon D7000 beast the Canon 1D Mark IV by a significant margin on DXOMark for sensor scores.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage - im not sure if i get you correct. i dont doubt that the d7000 is cheaper, but you say that the d7000 sensor is better than the 1Dmk4? not to mention high ISO? also, you base your rating on a webside that claims that the d7000 sensor is better than the 5dmk2. correct me if im wrong, but i dont think so...
and dont get me wrong here, im a nikon shooter myself and i dont try to hate on nikon in any way, but i think that dxomark rating isnt the most clinical out there.
TeddyImSuff 8 months ago

@JHVH1 The Nikon D5100 is my first DSLR. I love it.
I might want a Fujifilm X100 for photos, but no money for it now. May buy it maybe 3 years from now. :D
chakracannon97 8 months ago
@chakracannon97 I know where you are coming from. I wanted to learn the basics etc, and if I could afford it would want something like the X100 as well, or a 4/3 like the sony NEX cameras. Maybe after I get decent shooting with primes I'll get one to replace the point & shoot.
JHVH1 8 months ago
@JHVH1 I am not a sort of supporter of the Sony NEX series. But I do think micro 4/3 are the future, with the likes of Olympus and Panasonic pressurizing competitors. I would like an Olympus EPL-2, but I wouldn't have use for one with a X100. And primes are an excellent way to start, I have to agree.

TommyPh500d 8 months ago
@TommyPh500d I think the mic input is as good as the 5D Mk II, so yeah i think it is better than 7D. And the dual card slot is very useful. however, if you don't have help with video, you might want a Canon 600D or the Nikon D5100. Just a note. I would love a D700 for photos, but I have to make do with my D5100. just saying. :D

D7=Canon 7D :)
qwertzwasd 8 months ago
Hi,
I'm trying to decide between the D7000, K-5 and D7.
(I can get all three bodies at the same price)
qwertzwasd 8 months ago
@qwertzwasd - The auto focus speed on the D7000 is excellent. Best thing to do is try all 3 bodies out for yourself. Personally, I wouldn't buy into the Pentax system due to the limited and often over-priced lenses, plus the fact that the video abilities are limited. The Canon 7D is a very nice camera, and if you can get it for the same price as the Nikon D7000, then that's a good deal!
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage Great video! Very useful as usual. What about the continuous Video AF performance? Do you think it would perform High Speed Aircrafts tracking well? (like at Air Shows or Airport Spotting, with Sigma 70-200mm F2,8 II DG MACRO APO EX HSM and Nikon AF-S DX ED 18 - 105 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 serie G in particular). Thanks in advance :-)

@Forkroute Hello, a good camera doesn't depends solely on ISO. You're just another ISO buff.
By the way, a reader here, thinks D7000 is best at it's rank. 600D is best at it's rank.
kapkaplui 8 months ago
@kapkaplui - Not sure what an ISO buff is, but high ISO image quality is certainly a factor in determining image quality and a camera's over-all performance. I love the D7000 for the total package, which of course includes it's excellent high ISO performance.

Forkroute 8 months ago
@Forkroute Is the Pentax autofocus better than the NIkon?...
MrRusswarez 8 months ago
@MrRusswarez - Nope. Nikon rules that one. :-)
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@Forkroute - First of all, the Pentax K-5 did NOT beat the D7000 for high ISO image quality. Second of all, the D7000 is $400 cheaper than the K-5, not an insignificant amount of money. Thirdly, I'd much rather have the better line of Nikon lenses available than be stuck with Pentax's rather small and often over-priced offering. And last, the K-5 video is not competitive. So, for the price, I stand by my reasoning that the D7000 is the best Crop Sensor DSLR on the market today.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago 7
@ArtoftheImage Yes, the variety of Pentax lenses is wary pore.
MrRusswarez 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage you said : "Nikon has better line of lens". So you are rating the camera by the quality of the lenses. In my opinion Canon lenses are 1 little step ahead Nikon lenses. take the new 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2 for an example... So by considering the "lens line" on this opinion i would tie Nikon and Canon bodies. Considering just image quality i totally agree with you, the Nikon D7000 is the best croped sensor body in the market. and considering lens line canon>nikon.
nomadson 8 months ago 6
@nomadson - No, I'm not rating the camera by the lense, but a camera system is certainly a major factor when considering buying any given camera. It's a LARGE part of why I wouldn't buy a Pentax K-5.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@nomadson - In my opinion, Nikon zoom lenses are quite a bit better than Canon zooms, and many of the new Nikon primes are better than the Canon equivalents as well.
ArtoftheImage 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage Many Canon lenses have no equivalent alternatives from Nikon - like 50L (f/1.2 and f/1.0), 85L, MP-E 65/2.8 1-5x Macro, TS-E 17L etc. + you can use all the Nikon lenses on Canon body via adapter (like 14-24 for landscapes :)). Nikon lenses are considered better optically mostly because Nikon has better in-camera lens aberration correction. However, if you're using a decent post processing software with automatic lens correction profiles then it doesn't really matter.
0ecka 8 months ago
@nomadson leica has the best lenses!!
GacusanAMVs 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage I beg to differ. According to DXO marks, K5 > D7000 @ISO>3200 for (1) SNR, (2) dynamic range, (3) tonal range, (4) color sensitivity.
The studio comparisons made by the Imaging Resource website largely support those measurements as well.
The point about lenses is quite right though
PS: for all those who will say "pentax fanboy", I've got 5 Nikon DSLR under my belt
atamola 8 months ago
@ArtoftheImage As a D7000 user, I unfortunatelly disagree about the hi ISO. The bluish blacks on D7000 (D5100 is the same) images about 3200 (including) are big weakness. The noise is generally low, but when you don't have a real black on the picture, especially when you shoot night city scenario on vacation, what is it good for? :/ Pentax K-5 and Canon 60D has real dark blacks, there is almost no color "deviation", especially comparing to D7000's bluish blacks :(
