Its taken me 5 years to lose 3 1/2 stone on low carb and I still need to lose 5 more (according to my BMI meh). I don't know why it takes so long but I get frustrated go on starvation diets, or extreme exercise to make it go faster but it doesn't seem to make any difference so I end up cheating a lot. Its just an ongoing struggle and no matter how much I try to loosen up about the whole thing I'm still consumed by it.
I'm hypoglycemic. I gave up sugar in high school. I started with the highest sugar crap: candy, ketchup, breakfast cereals. Yes, it takes both time and will power to give up sugar. For me, the alternative was fainting a lot and then becoming diabetic.
Check out Fat And Cholesterol Are Good For You by Doctor Uffe Ravnskov. He shows cholesterol has NO RELATION to heart disease.
Nice vid. I'd have to add, the cholesterol levels, while nice to be lower, aren't all that important. Studies show it's vastly more important to decrease arterial inflammation.
Ketosis is great. I am always in ketosis and I am not hungry at all. i wish more people understood the benefits of cutting out carbs. i have been takingin less than 20 gm carbs a day for 2 months now. Never felt better.
The low carb ketone diet works very well for me as long as I included moderate exercise like walking 45 min, Im a pre diabetic and this diet pretty much normalized my glucose levels, I have been using the Paleolithic Diet approach
On the end of day 3 of a very low carbohydrate diet. My body is screaming for carbs every moment of the day, and today I broke down and had some peanuts and snacks. Very little, like 10 grams of snacks.
Still researching this. For example today I only realized that mayonaise + tuna + pepper = a quick and simple tuna salad with zero carbs! How hilarious it this. I should look into other combinations, in case I just get plain bored of steak and chicken every day har har
@piecharthosen This is exactly the pattern I teach... 3-4 days on low carbs, one day on higher carbs. It's a bit more tricky than that of course, otherwise you'll make yourself sick on the higher-carb day. everyotherdaydiet [ d o t ] com explains the process. Also, I mix a lot of fish (flounder is my favorite) with chicken, consuming 1 serving only a day of chicken or beef. Fish, egg whites (with one yolk) and whey make up the bulk of my protein.
Hey, I'm on my second round of (Atkins based) low carb. I'd totally advise you to try and stick with it. I've been struggling all my life with weight, this is the only thing I could do on my own that really worked. Last time I lost 45 pounds in 3 months, now I lost 20 in just under a month. I'm less strict now, and have one day in the week where I allow myself "little pleasures"- but no binges. It makes it manageable for me. What I love about lowcarb is I'm not actually hungry.
Thanks 1975supermike... I could not agree more. Nor could dozens of studies over the past two years; the largest being the massive "4-Diet Study" where even a diet as low-carb radical as Atkins still managed to out-perform low-fat and moderate-carb diets in lowering lipids (except HDL; HDL rose) and weight loss was superior.
People like VariedInterest just live to insult others. I have learned never to let their own misery bother me too much. ; )
More of this HDL LDL bullshit, hahaha. It is pretty apparent for me from talking to people on really low carbohydrate diets, that doing so causes some form of brain damage.
Well, I've been on a very low 'cyclical' carb diet (cyclical being the operative word) for 15 years and I'm not a mental vegetable yet. Moreover, there are entire cultures that 'never' eat carbs (the Massai, the Inuit, etc.) without a hint of brain damage. The brain functions off fat and ketones more efficiently than glucose. Consider 250,000 years of evolution: No carbs except for warm periods. The brain adapted nicely... still does.
Oh really? Shoot -- prove your points. "Totally false" -- start there. Oh, and you can take a pass on the childish insults if you want to make another post. Clear?
The only thing you have "clear" is the space between your ears when you look through one and out the other. You are a posturing, babyish, uneducated macho clown who has been fooled by the unqualified validation of the very frivolous company you choose to surround yourself with, incapable as you are of critical thought or sincere emotion. It falsely reinforces many things you consider to be biological truths, but are actually common fallacies of a post-literate, intellectually atavistic society.
I am leaving this online to demonstrate to the readers (a) that I gave you a chance at a rebuttal; you do nothing to spew ad homs... such a great defense of your absurd "totally false" comment that we "uneducated" (i.e. M.S., CCN) haven't a chance at a comeback quip; and (b) you extend your range of insights all the way to my emotional capacity as a human, not just carbohydrates, and yet somehow you believe yourself to be quite the lovely little thinker.
I am just so sick of the phony science that is put forth as nutritional advice. Uh, mineral and vitamin deficiencies from a meat, egg and vegetable diet........that is funny. Animal products are nutritional powerhouses, same goes for veggies. Uh, DUH, what would you rather live on if you had one choice, EGGS or PASTA? I hope your said eggs, because if you did not you would get very sick on that crappy pasta or whatever junk the so called experts push. Man evolved and thrived on meat and veggies!

Hi again. I have a general question for you Jon - unrelated to this video.
I keep finding these dark circles under my eyes - sort of like bags under the eyes but people say that they don't look too bad; I dunno, maybe I have distorted vision or something.
I thought it was due to a lack of iron, and so I've been taking iron supplements but they haven't gone away.
Then I asked someone at my gym, who said that it might be due to too much/little sleep & ppl w/ iron deficiency have yellow skin...
Hello, I am enjoying the simplicity of EODD & REALLY enjoying the shakes. I have finally found a use for celery!! Seriously, I have found when I eat simple carbs, like potatoes, I don't like how I feel. I have found that this is working for me. This past week, I started exercising again, ( I had an injury) and I like my results.
So far, I am losing inches, happy that I have a nutritional plan that I can live on the rest of my life, safely, healthily. BTW. I love apples!! TNX.
For me, I had to do the same basic thing each and every day. That is why Atkins works great for me, and to be honest, I have never seen a metabolic impact after the first 4 weeks. Dr. Stephen Phinney has a great paper on showing the cardio returns to acclimation after 4 weeks on a ketogenic diet. 10 marathons later, I am doing well.
Trying to cycle on and off days would have led to more on days and less off days, so rather than being easier for me, cyclical diets would be more difficult.
Thanks for the comment. I understand this completely. For most people, I think variety is essential. And for building "muscle" it's mandatory. You would not fair well on, say, a bodybuilding plan using nothing but Atkins. That's why EODD is so handy.
However, you have such a terrific grasp on what works for you (and for the exercise requirements), so kudos!
Jon, you hit the nail on the head bigtime with this one. I've been trying to explain my situation to my doctor and diabetic specialists for years and they keep trying to feed me more carbs. When I go on the very low carb diet, I lose weight, and as you pointed out in the research, all my cardio readings are at or below normal. Too bad my so many people in the medical field are hooked on passing put prescription drugs instead of helping their patients get healthier! Thanks a million. Lou in Wi
Yep... and good luck trying to convince most doctors of the facts. I have had more docs than I can count tell me, "Jon, I can't keep up with all these studies... I spend more time with insurance s**t!" Seriously.
So, naturally, they take what they learned in med school and consider it valid. It most cases it is -- in MANY it is not. This is one of those cases. We'll see dramatic changes in the next 10 years or so (I hope) in this area.
hey jon not a bad video, im glad you have shown the studies you use and am also glad that you mentioned its very easy to find one study to contradict another. i mostly use your eodd still its hard sometimes i love my potatoes and as we know theyre very high in carbs. i hate soft apples in off season too :P yeah im a picky eater. keep up the good work man.
Thanks kallelkent. For every study there's an equal and opposite study... Newtonian physics applied to nutrition. Heh. But that's why I like to use the 'real' scientific method, which includes looking at all available evidence. The strongest bits of evidence is our history as a species and specific deficiencies (see my video "Vitamin BS for example) that we can trace to foods and/or moving away from what's natural.
Yep... which is why Every Other Day Diet is "not" 5% carb.
I take what works with low-carb diets and apply it to a different strategy. The error in the super-low-carb theory is just time scale. Modified to work across 7 days rather than a day-by-day (like most diets) the technique uses a combo of higher fat and higher carbs at different times to your advantage. The pay-off is being able to eat almost whatever you want at specific times throughout the week and still get lean/muscular.
as always, Jon, you tell it like it is and are not only straight up honest but you have the science to back it up. I also think that individual goals and personal genetics factor into any diet plan, some people are more carb sensitive than others.
Really interesting - wish I had heard it years ago. I now know that the reason I had the belly fat despite maintaining a low carb diet was because I am insulin resistant.
A: Yes, in EODD I give a plan to stagger 'everything': Calories, carbs, protein and fats. This enables you to continually keep your body guessing. And best of all it's simple to follow. I believe in simplicity. It's the only thing I'll stick to. ; ) Everyone is different, so some need two on, one off, or what-have-you, but the principles are the same.
YES. this is exactly what I have been experiencing personally. And yes to your every other day diet plan. After 10 years of trying to be healthy and still fat I have lost 25 lbs in just the last 3 months since I started using your system. My wife doesnt even try hard and has lost 10 lbs. The most important thing for me is that I NEVER feel like I am depriving myself. That is very important form me.
Thanks for the comparisons and addiional information. I've been using Atkins off/on for many years. When I stick with it, I get fantastic results. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family so I'm very aware of this aspect and Atkins has been useful for stopping the 'sugar spikes' I used to have.
Try EODD arabrydertheoriginal. It's much easier than Atkins and I emphasize more "solid" protein foods. I admire Atkins for his brave stance, but he didn't really emphasize the best protein sources, nor did he bother with calories -- which probably led to his own ill-health in later years. Eating too much stresses the internal organs. EODD solves that problem.
Hi Jon great info and video as always. I have been cycling my days like crazy since I finished the my Rapid Fat Loss...I have been 3 on 1 off...2 on 1off. On my High Carb days I go crazy with my CARBS (hehe) only because I have been hitting the GYM with some intense workouts. My Muscles and body shape is changing FAST compared to those folks in the GYM. Great Stuff Buddy
Thanks, Jon, you know how much you have helped me: Radical Fat Loss Blueprint, EODD - great. This video has been affirmation of what I "knew", but forget sometimes. Keep it up, you are appreciated. Sherry
Thank you for confirming what I have been telling EVERYONE..I HAVE to be on a low carb diet because as soon as I raise my carbs I feel awful and gain weight. I am always told it is not healthy and it is nice to have your confirmation...Maybe now others will listen.
I was referring to the various stances on carbs, not just the Sears vs Atkins issue. Also, 40% carbs is a 'good start' for most people, but I believe most will fair better with lower carbs "most" days. I think it's nuts to say "eat X% carbs" and not cycle them... that's the real issue. Same for fats and to some extent protein. All covered in my book... : )
Thanks ksmall1998. I miss my camera though. Just picked up the new iPhone 3GS yesterday so I may try uploading a vid with the new camera in that sucka.
Meh... I wouldn't want the job personally. Awful lot of responsibility.
But yeah, agreed: Definitely not "God", or "a God"... but I appreciate the sentiment expresses nonetheless. I'll take.... Patron Saint of Quality Nutrition though.... heh.
Brain function, mmmm. I have 7 year olds in my class who are emotionally unable to cope and others who can't focus. Most are on a sugar cereal breakfast (or even coke cola). It's well known children from a richer cohort progress in learning far faster than those from poorer backgrounds. These poor kids wont eat fruit and veg when offered, Maybe we should be offering protein.
Oh, most certainly. A study came out (I should say 'yet another') on mother's milk versus the lower protein, much lower saturated fat bottled version. Kids ended up with higher I.Q.s, more well-behaved, more tolerant, etc.
No coincidence. Sugar and too little fat (early on) is a problem, and one we never evolved as a society to cope with. Try starting off with free range eggs and, say, a bit of blueberries in the morning to see what happens.
They were of particular interest to me as my mother died from dementia. It was really amazing to watch what happened when we shifted her diet from normal to low-carb, higher-fat. It was amazing: She stopped repeating herself "almost" entirely and functioned on her own completely for 8 years before falling (tripped over something, not an "elderly fall") and hitting her head. That triggered the cascade, but we had 8 great years thanks to a dietary and exercise change.
The thing about Jon Benson is not only does he demonstrate how things work scientifically, but, he goes through the steps and proves the theory in a practical manner. That's how you know he' s for real...
I'm glad to finally see another person in favor of low carb. Two comments: 1) low carb works if you don't limit the calories -- that is, you don't find some way to turn it into starvation. a lot of recovering calorie counters like to do that.
And more importantly, you're assumption that the brain needs insulin to use sugar is wrong. It uses sugar for fuel just fine. Otherwise folks with insulin resistant brains who eat carbs and aen't burning fat (thus no keytones) would faint.
1. Agreed totally -- you must stagger calories and carbs.
2. Never said the brain needs insulin. But insulin resistance prevents glucose uptake. Please refer to the study in the video. I posit that it does NOT work on sugar just fine, and that this is a VERY recent evolutionary adaptation that has serious side-effects for many people. Thanks!
The brain has long been viewed as an insulin-insensitive organ. Following the demonstration of insulin receptors in the brain, this assumption has been challenged, and a whole new field of research has emerged. Insulin appears to play a role in brain physiology, and disturbances of cerebral insulin signalling and glucose homeostasis are implicated in brain pathology. This special issue of the European Journal of Pharmacology provides an overview of research into the involvement of glucose.
I think the format of this video was better for the kind of subject thast was adressed compared to the regular webcam one. Its also nice to know that the EODD does more than just help you lose wight, it motivates me to keep going.
thanks so much! I appreciate actually seeing the studies. It's rare that I get to see the full citations of what the fitness industry is talking about.
No problem ohshma. I'll try to do more of these vids in the future. I do not rely solely on studies as you can find one that contradicts the other pretty easy -- but the major studies are great (like the comparative study between atkins/zone/ornish etc.)
Thanks, Jon. Yes, I've found carb and calorie cycling to be massivley successful when it comes to fat loss, but I was extremely interested to hear the effects of ketogenic diets on disease. I had written off low-carb diets long past so this has given me a new perspective.
Cool rodeohog. They have interesting clinical uses, that's for sure.
The statement in the middle of the video is right out of my upcoming edits to EODD -- carbs must be tailored to your current state of insulin resistance. This can be measured (albeit not precisely) using novel, in-home methods and by looking in the mirror.
Not fool-proof, but works better than anything I've come across yet.
Hi Jon thanks for the info. I found it very interesting and helpful. I am 40 and just got your book Fit over 40, I have noticed over the past couple years some memory problems, Do you think eating this way will help with that issue?
Annettemartin1, I HAVE the same problem. I have the genes for dementia (if indeed it's genetic.) Now, I have a great memory "now", but if I go off my diet and start eating sugar too frequently my memory starts to lapse. I'm open to this being psychosomatic, but it stands to reason.
The body is just not developed to use as much insulin as we're forcing it to produce, as obvious by the rampant Type 2 Diabetes in this country.
Thanks for the info, very helpful. I am 40 and have noticed some memory problems over the past year or so. Do you think eating this way could help me with that issue?

For me, I had to do the same basic thing each and every day. That is why Atkins works great for me, and to be honest, I have never seen a metabolic impact after the first 4 weeks. Dr. Stephen Phinney has a great paper on showing the cardio returns to acclimation after 4 weeks on a ketogenic diet. 10 marathons later, I am doing well.
Trying to cycle on and off days would have led to more on days and less off days, so rather than being easier for me, cyclical diets would be more difficult.
bowulf 2 years ago
Hi Bowulf,
Thanks for the comment. I understand this completely. For most people, I think variety is essential. And for building "muscle" it's mandatory. You would not fair well on, say, a bodybuilding plan using nothing but Atkins. That's why EODD is so handy.
However, you have such a terrific grasp on what works for you (and for the exercise requirements), so kudos!
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago

We'll see dramatic changes in the next 10 years or so (I hope) in this area.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
hey jon not a bad video, im glad you have shown the studies you use and am also glad that you mentioned its very easy to find one study to contradict another. i mostly use your eodd still its hard sometimes i love my potatoes and as we know theyre very high in carbs. i hate soft apples in off season too :P yeah im a picky eater. keep up the good work man.
KALLELKENT 2 years ago
Thanks kallelkent. For every study there's an equal and opposite study... Newtonian physics applied to nutrition. Heh. But that's why I like to use the 'real' scientific method, which includes looking at all available evidence. The strongest bits of evidence is our history as a species and specific deficiencies (see my video "Vitamin BS for example) that we can trace to foods and/or moving away from what's natural.

Isn't eating 5% carbs and working out gonna kill my muscle gains?
tattypatty 2 years ago
Yep... which is why Every Other Day Diet is "not" 5% carb.

Thanks metalchick5555! I appreciate the nod from the science community.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
as always, Jon, you tell it like it is and are not only straight up honest but you have the science to back it up. I also think that individual goals and personal genetics factor into any diet plan, some people are more carb sensitive than others.
bebedamour64 2 years ago
Thanks bebedamour64! And I agree with your carb statement.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Really interesting - wish I had heard it years ago. I now know that the reason I had the belly fat despite maintaining a low carb diet was because I am insulin resistant.
linsam12 2 years ago
Yep, I wish I had learned of it in school.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Thanks Jon! FINALLY some truth to the whole carb debate! Nice approach by using real research! ;-)
Q: So, you propose staggering carbs so that you an keep your metabolism up and benefit from low carb dieting?
salyris 2 years ago
Thanks!

Better than candy.
Yes, I have heard of Jeffrey. Thanks!
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
YES. this is exactly what I have been experiencing personally.

Way to go Randy! Good job man... thanks for the testimonial and kind words.

Thanks for the comparisons and addiional information. I've been using Atkins off/on for many years. When I stick with it, I get fantastic results. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family so I'm very aware of this aspect and Atkins has been useful for stopping the 'sugar spikes' I used to have.
arabrydertheoriginal 2 years ago

Thank you for confirming what I have been telling EVERYONE..I HAVE to be on a low carb diet because as soon as I raise my carbs I feel awful and gain weight. I am always told it is not healthy and it is nice to have your confirmation...Maybe now others will listen.

IN your email you said you had had enough of the 'carb crazies' - who were you refering to? To me it seems that its low carb against low carb!
mmutlu 2 years ago
I was referring to the various stances on carbs, not just the Sears vs Atkins issue. Also, 40% carbs is a 'good start' for most people, but I believe most will fair better with lower carbs "most" days. I think it's nuts to say "eat X% carbs" and not cycle them... that's the real issue. Same for fats and to some extent protein. All covered in my book... : )

Hi, Jon. Love your video's and information. Thank you. OK you're hamsome, lol...I'm funny too.

jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Brain function, mmmm. I have 7 year olds in my class who are emotionally unable to cope and others who can't focus. Most are on a sugar cereal breakfast (or even coke cola). It's well known children from a richer cohort progress in learning far faster than those from poorer backgrounds. These poor kids wont eat fruit and veg when offered, Maybe we should be offering protein.
geneticdecline 2 years ago
Oh, most certainly. A study came out (I should say 'yet another') on mother's milk versus the lower protein, much lower saturated fat bottled version. Kids ended up with higher I.Q.s, more well-behaved, more tolerant, etc.
No coincidence. Sugar and too little fat (early on) is a problem, and one we never evolved as a society to cope with. Try starting off with free range eggs and, say, a bit of blueberries in the morning to see what happens.
Cereals are garbage.

Jon, Great non-video about low carbs and health. The studies on reversing dementia were very interesting!
chanetc 2 years ago
They were of particular interest to me as my mother died from dementia. It was really amazing to watch what happened when we shifted her diet from normal to low-carb, higher-fat. It was amazing: She stopped repeating herself "almost" entirely and functioned on her own completely for 8 years before falling (tripped over something, not an "elderly fall") and hitting her head. That triggered the cascade, but we had 8 great years thanks to a dietary and exercise change.

The thing about Jon Benson is not only does he demonstrate how things work scientifically, but, he goes through the steps and proves the theory in a practical manner. That's how you know he' s for real...

jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Jon,
I'm glad to finally see another person in favor of low carb.
Otherwise folks with insulin resistant brains who eat carbs and aen't burning fat (thus no keytones) would faint.
blowfish333 2 years ago
Hi blowfish333,
Thanks!
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
The brain has long been viewed as an insulin-insensitive organ. Following the demonstration of insulin receptors in the brain, this assumption has been challenged, and a whole new field of research has emerged. Insulin appears to play a role in brain physiology, and disturbances of cerebral insulin signalling and glucose homeostasis are implicated in brain pathology. This special issue of the European Journal of Pharmacology provides an overview of research into the involvement of glucose.

ohshma 2 years ago
No problem ohshma. I'll try to do more of these vids in the future. I do not rely solely on studies as you can find one that contradicts the other pretty easy -- but the major studies are great (like the comparative study between atkins/zone/ornish etc.)

Thanks, Jon. Yes, I've found carb and calorie cycling to be massivley successful when it comes to fat loss, but I was extremely interested to hear the effects of ketogenic diets on disease. I had written off low-carb diets long past so this has given me a new perspective.
rodeohog 2 years ago
Cool rodeohog. They have interesting clinical uses, that's for sure.
The statement in the middle of the video is right out of my upcoming edits to EODD -- carbs must be tailored to your current state of insulin resistance. This can be measured (albeit not precisely) using novel, in-home methods and by looking in the mirror.
Not fool-proof, but works better than anything I've come across yet.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Hi Jon thanks for the info. I found it very interesting and helpful. I am 40 and just got your book Fit over 40, I have noticed over the past couple years some memory problems, Do you think eating this way will help with that issue?
Annettemartin1 2 years ago
Annettemartin1, I HAVE the same problem. I have the genes for dementia (if indeed it's genetic.) Now, I have a great memory "now", but if I go off my diet and start eating sugar too frequently my memory starts to lapse. I'm open to this being psychosomatic, but it stands to reason.
The body is just not developed to use as much insulin as we're forcing it to produce, as obvious by the rampant Type 2 Diabetes in this country.
jonbensonfitness 2 years ago
Thanks for the info, very helpful. I am 40 and have noticed some memory problems over the past year or so. Do you think eating this way could help me with that issue?
