I saw the same thing happen to the Whittington Brothers P-51, Precious Metal back in the 70's. Threw the bones out of it along with some sheet metal. The fastest, most dangerous motorsport in the whole wide world!!.
I have a friend Chaz who flies a P-51 12th block. An extraordinary guy and magnificent pilot. We usually stop at starbucks for a Mocha Latte' doppio and then go to the country club for a french countryside buffet with Dada. We then hop in the red barchetta to go to the aeroport to greet the freshly shined and warmed up P-51 Mustangio. Life is grand and we live life to the fullest. Its great to be great.
I´m not so sure that rattling sound comes from the Mustang because it always sounds to me the same loud no matter how far the P-51 is. It seems to be heard twice, with the Mustang in flight and landed. Once the plane has touched down and runs along the runway, it seems to have the engine stopped, but still that sound is on. I´d say, in short, that it comes from one of the planes stationed on the ground running its engine in low revolutions, maybe from one of the two working Sea Furies...
Man! That should have made the pilot quite an impression when the Merlin lost 90% of its power when the rod broke.... Awesome flying to save the Stang's life as well the pilot's...
I asume they fly the Griffon instead of Merlin? Was this about a $1M failure?

Fantastic 360˚ and deadstick landing, back to basics. A pilot such a machine deserves.

Great landing. Truly an exclusive sport because of the "spares" you have to bring to the race. Love the video and the outcome with out a crash.

Stu is an awesome pilot. I used to fly out of the same airport as him. He's a great guy. I'm glad he and the airplane survived.
