  • great graphic tool

  • I can find pigeon feather, is it okay?

    and,

    is the heating necessary?

  • What is the temp of the sand?

  • @bishopdarq The sand is about 200 degrees F or perhaps a bit more. Warm the sand slowly on low heat and mix it with a utensil so the heat distribution is even. When the you cannot place your finger tips on the sand surface for more than 3 or 4 seconds then turn the heat on very low and submerge feathers.

    Good luck.

  • did you draw that picture? and thanks for the awesome tutorial

  • can you just heat the part without the feathers.. because i want to maintain the feather, because at @2:06 the feathers are all gone... plz reply to my channel

  • By far the best video on youtube i've found on how to make quill pens, great job :)

  • my feather burned as soon as I put it the hot sand i guess it was too hot. has it happened to you?

  • On some planets the geese write with human pens.

  • Thank you.

  • Great job, great to watch "the making of the pen" ......awesome!

  • Anyone realised their getting silently rick-rolled?

  • its helped

  • To avoid uncontrolled discharge of ink one can hold the paper a bit more at an incline and hold the pen at a more horizontally. Holding the pen at or near vertical can be a problem. In the vid you can see how I hold the pen and paper etc. Thank you!

  • @countersink Thanks for the help! I will be trying it again tonight. Also, for trimming it back how far back is normally ok before making another?

  • Spit your gum out first :-)

  • Does the sand stay inside the chamber?

  • actually i think its a eagle feather.

  • i wanted to make a pen but im not to sure what kind of feathers i have, i just found them on the beach. Can i still use those ones?

  • I guess ostrich feathers have the biggest diameter. Very interesting to see how folks used to write. Seen lots of quill pen writing in historical movies. I always liked the noise they make.

  • cool drawings

  • "I like to clean quill pen with a few streams of water from water bottle"

    LOL.

If you also found this funny let me know.

  • Is it advisable to use any other kinds of feathers? Or would you strongly recommend goose? Thanks for this video, it was the most helpful out of all that I have watched.

  • Other species of bird feathers can be used including turkey (and goose of course). (an artist supply store in New York City named New York Art Central artist supply sells goose feathers.)

  • Great video- thanks a lot

  • nice

  • thanx dude

  • Buffalo wing feathers make the best quill pens.

    kidding

    Great video.

  • i talk like thissssshh

  • I actually used this video for a presentation I had to do. I did "How To Make A Quill Pen."

I watched this and got my general idea.

    THANKS!

  • I noticed you loaded the pen by placing drops of ink directly in the pen itself. Is it not possible to do this by dipping it in an ink well? Or is this too messy for your needs?

  • what is the brass resevoir for? when i made a pen I did not use one.

  • the brass reservoir is so the pen can hold more ink. It's not necessary but nice to have.

  • @countersink I was wondering about that also...if you only used two drops thats not much more ink is it?! To make it wider you can use a rubber made for pencils for that same purpose, your tape is a bit messy :)

  • Would you happen to be selling these? Cause I don't really think I can make one of these on my own. Please reply.

  • im watching this to learn how to write with a quill pen to do so in class while taking notes for the coming fall quarter because i am starved for attention....lets hope this video helps me

  • @dancingmop If you tip over the ink well, you will get lots more attention. Just a suggestion.

  • @dancingmop LOL LOL LOL, AHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • I want to have a quill pen, but:

Where its possible to get feathers? If i could get them without killing a canadian goose, that i see every week on our summer cottage...What if i scare the shts out of em' Maybe the drop feather or two? :/

  • A craft store will sell them.

  • if there are a group of geese just hanging around somwhere just wait for them to leave, they will probly drop a couple

  • yeah but ya need 2 wash thme 1st

  • Bash it in the head with a rock and take one of the feathers.

  • the problem with that is its illegal

  • Not the best sound quality but a helpful video! Thanks!

  • how do you get your pics dry

  • I just buy my pen and ink so much easier.

  • i can u se it for arts XD .. win win win.. hehe..

btw this video is cool rates! 5/5

  • i have some peacock feathors and wanted to try making them into pens. peacock feathers wont be a problem, will they?

btw, thanks for this tutorial. i've read a couple of books/articles about making quill pens but they're extremely comfusing.

  • Thank you for posting a question. I think that peacock feathers are relatively small (in diameter) compared to goose feathers (or turkey, etc.). Specifically the "quill' section. But you can try them out. What out for cracks, which should be avoided unless it happens to be located where the "center cut" goes.

    thanks again, Eddie

  • thanx.

  • i have a big red goose feather quill someone bought for me during a trip to England. i still have it and used a lot. however the nib on it is made of brass. i know, thats probably cheating lol but its lasted ten years as it is, and i dont baby it- well i do now since i dont use it as much...

i'd like to try this method out some time. i own turkeys and ducks and other birds and wonder if i could get into making quills for people. i'll have to try your methods out soon!

    thanks so much!

  • A very helpful and well done video! I had a bunch of goose feathers that I can now turn into a fun family project. Thank You!

  • Hi this is Eddie, the instructor/visual artist in this video. If you are using a quill, the following is important:

It is very important to remember that you may need to bend or fold the tips of the quill inward, one at a time (toward the center), every time you use it. This is because the tips will develop a space between them and the pen cannot write/draw well in that condition.

  • Is the brass reservoir a modern technique or was it used in the past?

  • I don't know how long the brass reservoir has been in use. Possibly since the birth of the quill pen which may be 1300's. I'm not sure.

  • Very kool*_*

  • Very nice tutorial, probably the best one I've seen on the subject. Very entertaining and informative, thank you.

  • where the hell am i gonna get all dis? and do you need a brass thingy

  • ok u made my life esier i made one but it took longer than 30 mins thanks

  • More people should know how to make quills, thanks for posting.

  • Thank you for your excellent tutorial! Can you use a piece of brass wire for the reservoir?

  • That's a really good question. I realized that brass wire would be better, so long as you hammer it flat. It will actually save you a step or two. I tried it but the wire I used seemed too heavy (.031"). .013" wire might be ideal. Let me know how it goes.

  • do u need the resoivoir?

  • You don't actually need the brass reservoir. I use my quill without it at times (when I've lost it and haven't gotten around to making a new one). The pen works fine without one; just holds less ink (25% +-). Did you make a pen?

  • Nice, what is the brass reservoir exactly for? Is it to store more ink in the shaft?

  • Yes, the brass reservoir enables the pen to hold substantially more ink. It also directs the in to the center cut which in turn leads to the paper surface. Thanks for watching.

  • Thank you for the informative video. I am a medieval illuminator and historical bookbinder. I often find the explanations in books contradictory and difficult to practically follow. Your visual presentation is really helpful. By the way... who sings the lovely song at the end?

  • The song on the video is from a CD with various artists called 'Putumayo Presents- French Cafe'. It's by Paris Combo and called On n'a Pas Besoin. -Thanks for viewing!

  • I've been looking for information on how to make a quill pen video tuteral for a while..thanks alot!!!

  • Eduardo Ching, senor, usted es un gran pintor. EXCELENTE
