  • If you can figure this out by ear, you are a genius! Most of the time (if not all) the only way I can figure out a piece is if the music is right in my face. Amazing!

  • hey, I just bought a keyboard yesterday xd and i wanted to learn this song. I think it's really helpfull :d I can't read notes either and I'm happy you can't too because then we are at the same level so it's easy for me to understand :) thank you!! and you can sing very well n.n

  • could u plzz do a tutorial for fairytale by sarah barielles !!!

  • fast forward to tutorial button @ 1:40

  • you talk a lot of shits

  • Thank you so much! :D Also, when you sang for the first time, I got goosebumps.. haha.

  • hey can you please do a tutorial for gravity?

  • how about the bridge part?

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I just decided to learn to play piano and this is the first song I am attempting. I was skeptical of trying to learn anything on YouTube like this, and also thought learning a song like this was probably too ambitious to start - but you do a great job explaining it step by step and I can (sort of) play it already. So thanks! :)

  • where did you learn to play piano

  • Thank you soooo much :]

  • MORE HOW TO's PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks so much! :)

  • this tutorial is very useful and effective. i learned it in less than an hour :) THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)

my version is mixed with the bridge i learned from the tutorial of our fellow YouTube user brycelane, and for the intro, i listened to Sara Bareilles' live version. so it's sort of like a hybrid of the three products :)) i'll post a video response soon, when i have a decent camera :)

i really hope you could check out my live cover of Bottle It Up sometime (though i didn't play the piano). :)

  • i can get separate notes as i hear them but not the whole chords by ear- u r amazing! thanks for uploading this and u have beautiful voice (when u start the verses) as well!

  • Hard to sound unprofessional when I never claimed to be a professional pianist in the first place.

Before you start giving condescending pointers to fellow YouTubers, you might want to read up on your facts as well. Like I said in this video (and all others), I play by ear; I don't know "modern notation" for chords. I'm just trying to be a help for others who want to learn the song, but don't read music well (like myself).

    Thanks for watching, though.

  • hey! this really helped! Could you do one for Come Home by one republic(feat. Sara Bareilles?)

  • it's an E7? I thought it was an Fminor

  • Thank u so much... i really wanted to play this song and thanx to you now i can!... keep up posting cause ur really good!! :)

  • Ur chord u don't know is an Ab diminished

  • ... E7 actually

  • Very helpful video. I'm sure a lot of learners are benefitting. I'm humbled that you learn all this by ear and get it RIGHT! Much more impressive at a party than being able to identify an E7 chord or G diminished...

  • haha. Thanks! Glad it helped you out! :)

  • Thank you :D:D:D::D:D:D <3

  • umm no offense bt u seriously talk a lot before you start the songs

    just helping

  • thanks so much!!

  • very interesting.

  • could you PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE do the bridge??!?!?

    amazing!!!

  • hi wow, firstly WOW! u voice is actually lush from 3:33 lol just sounds well nice :P. thanks for the how too i heard this song at work to day and came home and SEARCHED for it. and then decided why not learn it. thanks agen sarah!

  • THANKYOUUUUUU!!!!!!!!

  • Hey Sarah! I absalutely love your videos, you have such a great voice and play piano beautifully. I was wondering, do you know any Vanessa Carlton songs?? If you do, would you be willing to do some how - to videos for her? I find her sheet music very easy to read, however her outros are always so complicated! For example, the song called Home... I love that song, but cannot figure out how to play the outro for it.

    Thanks so much,

    Leah

  • This is great! Can you do a tutorial for Breathe (2 AM) by Anna Nalick?

  • hey,

i'm 12 and i'm from belgium. i speak a little english. my writing is bad. but you show the notes you play and that makes it much easier. can you play love story from taylor swift. i would like to play that song. thank you!!

  • could you please tell show how to play the bit that goes "started as a flicker meant to be flame.."

is it just the same as the verses?

i'll try figure it out myself tho ^^

    your tutorial was brilliant!

reeeally easy to follow, your a good teacher :)

    xox

  • I really like the how to vids. You should do them more often :)

  • Hey great tutorial!

It was a LITTLE confusing, at first. But I got it =D

I have a great trick to help with the ear-playing (if you don't know it already). I use it all the time to play Love Song by Sara Bareilles. Hey you should do that, too!

Anyways, when your listening to the song, unplug your earphones halfway so you can only hear the background music and vocals. It should really help, even if the sound isn't SO clear. I hope I helped!!!!

    Again, great tutorial!

  • thanks for the tutorial! you're an amazing piano teacher! you teach it very easily. i think you should keep these tutorials coming! if you have the time to, could you do "Gravity" by her as well please? If not, no worries. =)

  • hey this is a great tutorial!

Do you think you could make one for 'FairyTale' by Sara Bareilles as well?

    that'd be golden!

  • this is really great & one of the best piano tutorials on youtube. ive never learnt how to play the piano and i love to sing so this kinda thing is perfect for me, but like others im finding it hard to get the extra notes what aree they? also how do you know what cords fit in where and also when your describing the 'outro' you dont say the notes like you say in the rest of the tutorial and they'd been really helpful for that bit.erm so yeah id be really greatful if u could reply to this thnks (:

  • PLEASE

    PLEASE

    PLEASE

put on a tutorial for beauty from pain by superchick! I REALLY NEED IT FOR MY BAND! PLEASE

    PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU!

  • How do you ad the extra notes that you played in your video? im finding dificulties with that

  • I actually just play random notes to fill in the empty space. No definite notes... I just play what feels right at the time. That sorta comes with practice and playing around. Try it! :)

  • cn you please do a totorial gravity by sara bareillis

  • where do you play the outro. thanks for the video btw

  • Sorry for the late reply. The outro is played at the end of the song as she's singing, "You're only gonna get get what you give away...." :)

  • wow i always wanted to learn how to play bottle it up maybe i will try this at home but how do you memiorize the sheet music to know what notes to play .

  • You're really awesome. You're a real good teacher, it was really easy to understand and learn the song! Could you please do more tutorials for sara bareilles' songs? Oh, and i noticed that you don't play the bridge, could you figure out that part as well? You would do me a great favor! Thnx!

  • You're sooo nice! :) For sure. Thank you for your tutoria. In the future at the end you should play it through slowly so we can put it all together while we're learning it together. :) Thanks though it was great. I'll figure it out.

  • your so nice!!!

  • I loved your tutorial! You are a great teacher very easy to follow. I would really enjoy more "how to's"from you.

  • Your awesome! Could you do me a big favor??? Can you PLEASE do a tutorial for Sara Barellies' song Gravity? You are an awesome tutor and I really need your help with this song! Thx!

  • hey Sara thanks for the video!! the Chord that u dont know the name its a E7 u are doing the e on the bass line and the rest of the chord with the right hand, it sounds weird cause that second part of the chord its dim so thats why =) sorry about my english, im from Colombia (south america) and my english is not the best i hope u get me!!! i got the song already but im very shy so i dont think i can post a video!! thanks though!! tace care and keep bringin tutorials u are very good at it!!

  • you look like Soleil Moon Fry

  • i really wanted 2 play this song so thnx

  • Thanks for the tutorial this was def the most helpful one on youtube!

And the chord would make the most sense as a b natural diminished chord in third inversion.. just without the 5th (if you had an f in there it would be spelled a flat,b,d,f)

  • at 6:07 its an E7th if you were curious nice vid by the way

  • the name of the chord is truthfully a g diminished i major in music theory at my school and if i didnt know that i wouldnt be able to go back to school...

  • youre right and im only in 8th grade :P

  • Will you please do a tutaral on

When you look me in the eyes/and/or,

    Apolozize pleasse!

  • That A chord is A minor..

    But good tutorial!

  • Thanks!! The song was definitely easier to learn with your tutorial!! I was able to do a cover of my own!! :)

  • o and can u also do the bridge?

  • o and btw the chord u don't know the name of i think it's an A flat diminished... great job!

  • spot on...that's the name of the chord

  • This was really helpful. Thanks!! There's one song that I'd love to learn on piano if you can help...It's called "Scared" by Duffy.

  • the weird chord you mentioned is a G# minor. thanks for the tutorial and your other video is so great. you have an amazing voice!

  • no offense but it's a g diminshed chord because from the a flat to the b is a third andfrom the b to the d is a third and so its diminished

  • yeah, i noticed it after i submitted my comment but i couldn't delete it. and since it was wrong, i thought people would disregard it.

    but thanks~

  • youru welcome always happy to help =)

  • i wish you would have added a slowed down version at the end of your video so we could play it along with you slower and see how it all fits together.

I love sara bareilles' "love song" but i had never heard this song. its gorgeous

  • I can actually play it better than any other song i know on piano. thank you soooo much. your voice is amazing by the way :)

    haha :)

  • hey, just wondering if you could also let us know how to play the bridge of the song (where she sings "started with a flicker meant to be a flame...")... thanks for this much, though!

  • could u give me advice about putting the words with the piano part. i can do some but im still struggling. ur video did help so much though. i luv ur songs and learning ur piano parts so keep them coming!:)

  • the video helped alot. but i still cant figure out how to put the words with it. ive tried but its not working out 2 well. i can do the some parts of it but im struggling. any advice?

  • hi! your tutorial was very helpful :) thanks.

How do you play the part that says love love love over and over agina?

  • you're tutorials are very easy to understand and follow...this isn't exactly how the original goes but the chords are the same and I like this version better because it's more fun to play

  • now i could play 2 songs from Sara B.....nice vid....

  • Wow I love this song and am so glad I know how to play it now. Thanks!!!

Would you happen to know any other Sara Bareilles songs?

if you could learn Many the Miles or Fairytale then post a tutorial I would be so excited.

Thanks again for doing such a great job learning this piece and then teaching all of us.

  • you did a great job with the tutorial. i only had to watch it once before i knew how to play it. most of the time when i watch a youtube tutorial i have to bring a laptop down to my piano to play it but that was really well done so i didn't have to. thanks. i would post a video response but since i don't sing i'd rather learn the way sara plays it or another version that's a little more challenging but nobody has the tutorial for that. so thanks =]

  • The Ab -B-D is a diminished chord :-)

  • i think it's actually an E7- E, G#(Ab), B, D

  • and when does the prechorus come in? is it when she says "don't make me tell you again" and then you come in with it? or is it "only thing i could ever need"?

  • The pre-chorus is "Only thing I ever could need..."

Hope you're having some luck with it!

  • hey, I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on "city" by sara bareilles. I thought you did a great job with "bottle it up," it took about 30 min for me memorize the whole piece. Thanks.

  • wow! i love it!

  • Hey! Gotta say I love your voice, and I'm following this tutorial (slowly... very slowly... life's busy!) to try and make my own base, since I don't have one of this song and I love it.

I posted it on my youtube channel if you want to check, but with a very bad background sound. It'd be so better with a piano background. If I manage to make my own instrumental base using your tips, I'll let you see how it turns out ;)

Keep up the good work! You're a great singer.

  • I can't wait to hear your piano version!! :)

  • Heh! Slowly working on it! I'll post it here when I finally get something done! ;)

Keep up the good work as always!

    Bruce

  • Hey, the A chord isn't A, it's A minor. And the mysterious chord (A flat, B, D) Is G#/Ab dim (diminished). You got everything else right, though! Props on basically making up an instrumental to this, I play piano by ear too and it's no easy job!

  • THANKS!!

I knew someone would eventually comment that they knew the chord names.

I know what to play, I just don't know what to call it! haha!

I did take lessons a LONG time ago, but I never paid any attention during the theory part ... :)

  • Haha, I've never taken theory, it just kind of all clicked one day... I think the fact that I know basic guitar helped too, so I just play with guitar chords when I don't have sheets! :)

  • i would wish have time for learn to play this instrument, how many long did it take you to learn piano? *****

  • Hmm... I took lessons when I was little for about 9 or 10 years. But I've only been playing by ear for about a year or so now. :) Give it a try....
