  • Great movie but i do think it is overated, it isnt the best movie of 2011. And No Country For Old men is even more overated. That movie was a big disapointment

  • This movie looks like it would Piss me off....

  • When I saw this movie for the first time, I saw Daniel Plainview as an utterly evil character, but the second time I saw it, I saw him as extremely sympathetic. He truly worked hard to achieve his success, and you could tell in the earlier parts of the movie that he really loved his son a lot. When his son goes deaf, the obsessively competitive part of him begins to hate his son for the inconvenience that he causes, but you can see the emotion in his face when he leaves his son on the train.

  • Defintiely best film of 07

  • don't bully me daniel!

  • The Citizen Kane our our time. GO DANIEL!

  • It's only overrated if you're an idiot.

  • Amen.

  • @dillonator its not a bad movie but i didn't deserve its awards its a good movie but a not the master piece a lot of people think it is

  • it's a good character study, but there is hardly much to think about. this is a serious question, if someone could answer, i'm really curious.

  • I'll try. This film is one of the ultimate examples of the balancebetween good and evil or light and dark. Daniel Plainview is the devil, come to earth to rape it of it's most precious resourse, all in the name of greed, vanity, pride, lust and all the rest. He is the embodyment of sin. Eli represents religious ignorance and fable. He is the child that every devoted Christian wantsto be, innocent. Eli doesn't see his own greed, but Daniel does. I can elaborate if you wish.

  • This is incorrect. He is not the embodiment of sin. You're suggesting that the director is trying to convey dichotomy, but artists imitate reality through their work, and this is not a work emphasizing the world's bifurcation. The complexity of the characters makes it almost impossible for them to be reduced to finite adjectives, because they will eventual overlap, describing both of them; and that's the point. In the race for profit, everyone is the same.

  • There is significant literary value in the settings, the music (or the lack thereof), and the interactions with the setting and other characters. If you see no value in the movie, you probably need to look into literary studies or a course in literature, for the movie is drowning in literary devices.

  • PTA doesn't want to have a classic fairy tale ending, he wants to have more of a realistic ending to portrey what the characters life was really like. The movie is basically about life and people getting in each others way to get what they want....its everywhere just look around. It's about how hard it must have been to do what he did at that time from scratch, persistence, and people misusing Christianity to get what they want...Eli. Its very interesting and intruiging if you keep watching.

  • Also, Daniel and Eli are really after the same thing, but Eli is using a religious front that he himself may not even be full aware of if confronted. Daniel, while greedy is straighforward about his greed and therefore sees himself as much more noble than Eli even though they have the same financial desires.

  • The movie's a little slow, but it's pretty good nonetheless. It's more for the observant and thinking person than the one looking for a good action flick.

In short, it's based on the book Oil! by Upton Sinclair, and is a study of Religion and Greed. Brother Eliah is based on Reverend Aimee Semple McPherson, who found my denomination, the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Interesting story, you should wiki it if you get the chance.

  • lmao

  • looool

  • yes..good movie...I'm betting you were surprised to see me at the Berlinale premiere

  • Dying to see this! And have been for months..

  • 1.58 the laugh of Satan...

  • That's what I thought. I still have not seen this movie. He seems pretty evil in this movie.

  • So this is the film that Daniel Day-Lewis earned his second Oscar for. I'll have to check it out.

I really like Daniel Day-Lewis because he's managed to keep himself underrated for so long.

Did you know that he has only had lead roles in four movies during the past 12 years? He's a perfect example of a selective actor.

  • And he comes out the better for it, he pretty much owns this movie and is such an engrossing, dominating force. While I thought the story dragged at many points Day-Lewis showed why he is one of the best.

  • This film will easily live to be a dark classic like "Full Metal Jacket".

  • I believe that as well.

I definetly think anyone 17+ should see this movie.

(17+ because some people might get lost in what all is happening)

If anyone is watching this trailer and is thinking of renting it, PLEASE DO. You will not be disappointed in any way.

  • DUDE i'm 15 and i probably understood it way more than you could

  • Ok, well I didn't mean any offense by it. I'm just glad you liked the movie (I am assuming you did by the comment).

  • ya it was great sorry for getting so pissed off

  • It's cool, just glad you liked this movie.

Seriously people, if you are watching the trailer and reading my comment then I will say RENT THIS MOVIE. I'm going to buy it, still haven't gotten around to it though.
