Borax straight from the box tends to just sit on top of the metal.
If you melt it into a metal dish or tray, and then break it up before fluxing your metal with it, the hot metal just sucks it up into every nook and cranny and makes for a better weld.
That gotta be some hard work without a powerhammer. And thats a nice forge you have, did you make it yourself? I just started with damascus my self to. :)
mount that thing before it falls an your foot, get a huge log and some metal straping, then use lag screws to hold it down man.maybe a bigger anvil, I know they aint cheap butt your wasting allot of energy every time your anvil jumps. " you need a better base"
Dr. Ray Rantanen retired NASA rocket scientist makes the strong damascus I know. He uses O-1 tool steel , S-2 recycled jack hammer bits and mild steel.
hey Noah. U might not remember me because we haven't talked in a year or so. But now (because of your inspiration) i am learning old style blacksmithing! YAY. I go to my 1st public committee lesson next Friday. I just wanted to thank you for your info and help - Sincerely, Andrew
lol! that anvil is cracking me up! mostly because i know how it feels hehe. My anvil is heavy enough but its so old it has a warped saddle in the middle and many many gouges. O and in response to the guy who was talking about forges... I have a whisper daddy gas and i'm not sure if it gets hot enough to forge weld... so its nice you have that coal one.
I cant help but wonder how many cold shunts he found when he started grinding that blade down...One of the many reasons very few knife makers are still using charcoal..I admire the effort but you need to slow down and manage your heat better..You might want to look into an electric blower with a pedal switch...That or invest in a gas forge...They have become quite affordable over the last few years....Thanks for sharing
That is quite a nice setup, whats that anvil made by? And the "informative" comments by people who obviously have no clue whats going on is really annoying. people do that on my videos too, it is hellishly annoying. By asking stupid shit like proof that this is damascus steel you obviously have no clue whats going on, if you did you would be able to tell that this is a damascus billet. dont make text comments unless they are positive, helpful, or educated. dumbasses
i think you should fix your anvil on a wood block, you use to much power for nothing because your anvil always rebounds. and consequence, you hammer's power is lost. fix it and you'll see, stretch your iron will be more easily.
banging around on anvils and steel can really screw your elbows up over time--or that's what I've heard a blacksmith/knifemaker say

u wish u had a power hammer? try it with a bigger anvil, a base where the anvil is locked and stone ground for the basement.
this could help u very much. each jumping of the anvil, shout down the power of the hammer pounch.

it must be a real pain in the ass with all that light. i would have waited till dark to weld in the open.

if u weld together two rods of iron and start forging them, will the metal from the welding rod make any pattern?
GoatLord66 3 years ago
yes i made it in 10th grade shop class i have a much better setup these days.

i typed in the wrong blank if the 2 rods have diferent amonts of carbon
StevenSagal 3 years ago
Yeah like people have said before that anvil needs a better mount, like a tree stump. Your hammer shoud bounce off the anvil not with the anvil.

I have had both and coal with a hand crank blower gets the hotest and is the most cost effecive

the anvil isnt bad its just the stand put it on a tree stump so it wont bounce arounf and potentialy fall over
hellcow22 4 years ago
You need to put sandbags on your anvil stand legs, and I hope you can find a better anvil.

your anvil is jumping around like it has been drugged get it down to the ground somehow
trytops007 4 years ago
Iagree if mount the anvial on something more solid you would get more out of every hit.But besides that you have a nice setup on the forge.
samcornett29 4 years ago
hehe...yeah I know how you feel I wish I had a power hammer too ^^
Their right you would find that if your Anvial was stedy you would get more power out of your hits

umm...could you show the end result, you havnt shown any proof that your making damascus steel.
DukeSauropsida 4 years ago
so you basically created a flame hot enough to forge metal...using laundry detergent as fuel??? O_O
Intranetusa 4 years ago
no the borax is used to clean the steel its flux
StevenSagal 4 years ago
no the detergent is flux. flux is a material used to prevent the surface oxidation ("fire scaling") of hot hot hot metal.
sandcrab132 4 years ago
ah ok, thxs. I must've mis-read something
Intranetusa 4 years ago
as well as being a flux, it's also a detergent used in industrial cleaning (read it somewhere), so you were both correct!!
aflatminor 4 years ago
no to prevent surface oxidation in metal touching the coals, if it were say sitting on a hot hot hot sheet of metal the blade wouldn't scale at all
dienized 4 years ago
good to see ya having a go at such a noble art. I would bolt your anvil down it seems to jump about a far bit.. Good luck

Excellent video of forging. If you have electricity out there try using a hair dryer for your blower.
