A few months ago I was lying on my bed reading and noticed some pain in my arm. It took me a few seconds to notice a bug walking across my sheets. I caught it and kept it alive and intact long enough to be sure enough it was indeed a bedbug, then proceeded to underestimate the amount of blood inside of it and crushed it with a tissue (not a good sight).

Should I be concerned? I washed my sheets, pillows, etc and checked/vacuumed my mattress without noticing any more. No incidents since then.

@Newbeboy __ Yes, you should be concerned. When you find one it usually means that there is a lot more in hiding in and around the bed you sleep in. We do not feel their bite and pain comes after they have fed which explain the blood inside of it. If you vacuumed your mattress, get rid of the bag, they survive and will come out of it. Cover your whole bed with a plastic sheet and install some traps underneath it to catch them. Every bite from an adult makes 2 to 10 more baby bedbugs.

@asdfkut __ Don't waste your efforts and your money. Bedbugs can hide anywhere in your home. They stay mostly on and around the bed to be close to you but adults travel and migrate to other parts of your place and to your neighbors.

Instead of a new bed and furniture, set up traps to catch them so they will eliminate themselves.

It is a huge problem in Canada too. I have respect for what you're doing. If it weren't for people like you, dogs wouldn't be trained to sniff them out and we wouldn't have pesticides to kill them. A library close to where I live was infested with them. Putting yourself in misery (I've heard the bites are really itchy and can hurt) for research is so heroic and you're not testing on animals, you're testing on yourself.

I have a big spider that lives under My bed, which eats the bed bugs. Great solution to the bed bug problem. I have a friend who breeds a specific house Spider, then trains them by feeding them bed bugs only. You get a bit of a fright every now and then when the spider makes the odd uninvited appearance but, You soon get use to it. It really works!

Excellent video. This is research and a step towards understanding what makes bedbugs react and why. It is also the key to getting rid of bedbugs.

Bedbugs are attracted to heat and CO2.

To catch bedbugs and eliminate them use those characteristics. Make a trap that let's out CO2 to attract them into a place where they can't get out. Since they have hooks to climb, a smoooth and slick surface becomes a deadly trap for them.

First, put a plastic sheet over and around the mattress and bed so that bedbugs will have nowhere to go but down to the floor.

Put CO2 traps underneath the bed to catch them as they come down looking for a "meal".

Traps can be made with simple things we find at home.

A simple soup bowl with a skirt and a CO2 generator in it works perfectly and catches all the bedbugs within a week.

I'm a vertebrate zoologist (bats are my specialty) who wrote a book about blood-feeding creatures and interviewed Lou Sorkin (a world renowned entomologist) for that book. Lou's specialty happens to be bed bugs - a SERIOUS problem in the U.S. and elsewhere.
