  • She's not supposed to be insane.

  • My guilty pleasure Thumbs up if you agree :)

  • In my opinion, you can act insane and still sound good. In fact, the look on her face is creepy at some points in this performance, and she didn't have to butcher the song either. Look at the way she hands the food to the birds...she looks out of it.

  • For everyone talking about enunciation, I believe that she is phenomenal and that the quality of the video and sound is making her sound worse than she is.

  • I feel that people dont realize that her character should have stayed in that nut house, try watching the original and try not laugh. Celia did this song musically justice, but not as insane as I'd like. Love the hell outt her though

  • Yes she's a great singer, but she doesn't seem nearly as virgin-like and pure as the Johanna in the movie, which I think should be her key characteristics...

  • like if you think for some reason ics vortex should sing this. (if you dont know, he is the most appreciated black metal clean vocalist ever)

  • I rather like this Joanna. I like her better than the origional. I just sang this song for my voice class final. :)

  • She's just such a good actress, too. You really get a great sense of Johanna's desperation here.

  • I am officially so jealous of her! she is so phenomenal.

  • she is AMAZNIG!!!

  • I'd like to hear Kristin Chenoweth sing this :3

  • @BACONANDCHIVES Same she would be so good at it!! :D

  • @BACONANDCHIVES YES! Cheno would would murder this song, in a good way. :)

  • Sounds like she's underwater

  • tempos too slow .. great voice

  • Incredible! So much better then the broadway Johanna T.T my god..

  • Olive Ostrovsky <3

  • Who is it

  • Just realized she played Éponine in Les Mis...

  • She's great! Still cast a little old, but a lovely voice, and that's what counts.

  • I think it was taken down a bit. it doesnt sound as high. but i like it better like this, because it doesnt sound as shrill/

  • OMG just realized who it is!!!

  • I have to admit, I hated this at first. But now it's really growing on me.

    Good job!

  • she sounds likke the one in the movie :)

  • Lovely...

  • Her "maddened by the stars" sounds perfect.

  • "Or simply dreaming? Are you crowing? Or screaming?" The way she sung that almost drove me to tears... stunning voice

  • Too strong a voice. She's meek and scared. Not strong willed with a voice like this implies. Still like this though. :)

  • @TheJjlxx just so you know... girls have a head voice, not a false and she did a stunning job with this song

  • wait, where was that filmed? OMG I THINK I SAW THAT PLAY

  • you are AMAZING! a true pleasure to listen to....this song is a weapon when sung by less-golden voices. thank you for being gentle and caressing to my ears!

  • The movie's version is a bit higher, isn't it? o.o I like this one too. ^^

  • @akissy This version starts on a C and the movie version starts on a C#. (That's higher by a half step-moving from a white key to the black key to the right- if you're unfamiliar with pianos/music theory.)

  • @Rose375 Go figure. Xd Thanks for the info. ^^

  • she reminds me so much of amy adams.

  • Olive! :D

  • LAKME .... why isn't her name in the title?

  • 20 people cant sing anything

  • OMG! Such a good voice.. if i didnt know the words i would not have a clue what shes saying so that really sucks!

  • She really need to Enunciate better. Voice is SPOT on...

    "Burdned by the STOOOOOOOOOORHS!"

  • @Zugrim Um it isn't burdened its maddened. I'm playing Johanna. :)

  • ohdude. not too much opera and not too much like the film. it's good. it's REALLY good. :)

  • i have to say that i wasn't expecting this, i love her voice i like how it's softer and not so high picthed like the oroignals, who's voice is good but can make yoir ears bleed, while the others portrayed how crazy andd trapped she felt, i still have to say that i perfer this voice to hers:)

  • wow who knew she could play a soprano role and mezzo role... wide range! :D

  • I didn't know she could sing like that.... Not that I didn't think she wasn't capable, but I've seen her in more quirky roles (Saved!, Spelling Bee, etc.), and I never imagined Celia as a legit soprano.

  • this one is so much better than the original crazy one bc i can actually see why Antony falls in love with her just from hearing this! <3

  • oh god, why didn't they cast Celia in the movie instead?! The one in the Burton movie is just so "blah" and boring

  • Nope. Insanity is one of the topics of the musical, it's true, but Johanna is sane. Her mother went insane and Johanna herself is taken to an insane asylum, but that's Judge Turpin's revenge.

  • i dont think she needs a bird to teach her to sing :)

  • @prettylittleroslyn she wants to know how could the birds keep singing when they're trapped in their cages because she feels just as trapped in Turpins house

  • @Kerriangel lol what i meant was she is such an amazing singer she doesn't need a bird to help her :)

  • Simply beautiful.

  • Wait. Is Joanna supposed to be insane?

  • @Casey5693 I'm serious. Is she?

  • @Casey5693 a little bit, I mean, she's lived in the same room for 15 years. Plus living with a lecherous old judge wouldn't help.

  • @AvidMusiQBukworm She just wants to get out more.

  • @Casey5693 yes.

  • @Casey5693 Yes Joanna is supposes to be crazy from all of Judge Turpin's torment.

  • @Casey5693 No her mother Lucy is.

  • @Casey5693 Yes, she is. The original origin of the musical was meant for her to be completely insane due to the fact she was kept in a house all her life... C`mon, I mean, she's singing to a blind bird... X"D

  • better then all the others i have seen

  • @wiwf123 even the blondes have to wear a wig, they always have johanna wear a wig unless its some community theatre or something and you just happen to be blonde...but im going to guess that more than half the johannas werent blonde anyway :) but you would have to wear a wig seeing as her hair is described particularly as yellow

  • @BubblegumPopProdctns Not necessarily, though I do bet half of them weren't blond, though her hair looks pretty real but it probably was a wig. My hair is completely literally yellow naturally so I'm sure other peoples are too.

  • @musicalgirl4life

No, I have to say that it looks like her real hair...if you look closely, her roots are darker. She may have dyed it. I played this role for a local high school in March and the director asked me to bleach my hair. When I said no, she found me a wig. Her hair looks much too natural to be a wig, I think.

  • Dear god. She sound's beautiful.

But..She has my name. Haha. My name is Celia too!

  • I wanna see the actual production, but I have no one who'd wanna see it with meD: This isn't exactly one of my dad's favorite musicals xD. Oh well. I'll see it eventually. :].

  • Do you think a brunette could ever get the role of Johanna? (without having to wear a wig?) Because I would love to play this part someday, but I am certainly not "yellow-haired".

  • What an incredible rich voice she has. I adore her so much.

  • Wow! Celia really is just too incredible. This is a very hard song to sing, but Celia makes it look effortless. And I'm fairly sure she's a mezzo, not a soprano.

  • I like this version better than Jayne Wisener in the 2007 movie version. Astounding!

  • jayne wisener sang it higher than her

  • @BoonieB2007 I believe this is actually the same key as the movie version here on YouTube. It's in F (first note is a C). Jayne just has a different tone to her voice - sweet but not as full. That could make you think it's "higher."

  • @TuberosityTime she doesn't go as high on the "beckoning, beckoning" part she goes down on the last vowel instead of up. in the movie she does singing some parts higher then here, it's not the key

  • @TuberosityTime she doesn't go as high on the "beckoning, beckoning" part she goes down on the last vowel instead of up. in the movie she does sing some parts higher then here, it's not the key

  • A little slow. I feel as though it dragged on but Celia Keenan-Bolger is amazing at capturing the essence of young women, she's absolutely fabulous!

  • Betsy Joslyn's voice in this song makes me feel sick, Celia's voice makes me feel sick with jealousy.

  • Best way to sing this song!!!

  • FINALLY A DECENT RENDITION OF THIS SONG. The girl from the movie is too squeaky. D;

  • @feefeenou I completely agree! its such a pretty song, but jayne wisener doesnt sing it well.

  • @Bomberzone1745 Sarah Rice was the original but Betsy Joslyn replaced her and did the tour which was filmed for Showtime. This young lady is excellent.

  • She is amazing!

  • Hmm...I like Jane better tho. Good job tho

  • Wow the best johanna i've ever seen! bravo!

  • her facial expressions remind me of sutton foster...

  • looks like she has a retarded eye

  • This version is amazing! :)

  • I wish my school could do sweeney todd

  • Il ike her and the Johanna from the original cast recording.I'm a HUGE movie fan,but the character and voice of Johanna is too weak.Love this song, love Sondheim

  • This with Hugh Panaro and his mutton chops as Anthony, right?

  • this is by far the best version! she's amazing!

  • i love the play and movie

  • she's possesed! fuck!

  • atleast this girl acts it out....and doesnt look cross eyed....like the one in the recorded version with Angela

  • aaaaaawesome!

beats the fawkward acial expressions of the original broadway production.

  • she ounds like a princess too, like cinderella or sleeing beauty/aurora

  • Despite the range is pretty low for a coloratura's range, I think the song was made more for a coloratura soprano's light tone. She does a beautiful job! But unfortunatly, she is more of a lyrical soprano, so she naturally has a heavier tone, and her vibrato seems to weigh the sound down, too. But aside from the Korean Johanna, this is one of the best I've heard.

  • Why is singing with an American accent?

  • I like the Johnny Depp Johanna better.

  • she needs to go easy on vibrato on some parts.

  • @julieruth35 agreed. its not as sweet as it should be because of her intense vibrato. now dont get me wrong her voice is beautiful but she needs to sound more naive here

  • Every time I see this vid, I marvel that this is the same woman that was in the new Les Mis, because it just doesn't seem like the same voice to me. MUCH prefer her more operatic voice!!

  • Pretty voice... needs to work on her vowels... more english accent when she sings... I understand its a musical and the audience needs to hear it... but there is a way to do it.

  • shes better then the movie version johanna..her voice is amazing..holy

  • pretty voice =]

  • She's fantastic!!!

  • This is one of the best ones that ive heard. She's much better than the Johanna from the Movie production

  • she's good but i think she plays it up on the vibrato a lil too much. She's sposed to sound young, but she's better than most Johannas.

  • She's beautiful AND talented...it tends to be a rarity with Johannas.

  • my god, she has a beautiful voice

  • AWSOME!!

  • what a voice...damn.

  • just perfect

  • what a gorgeous voice!

  • Ooh!! She sounds so pretty! She's better than the original crazy one!! This song reminds me of Disney Princess lol :P

  • @yippedoodah LOL "original crazy one"! xD NICE! ;)

  • Agree strongly. I couldn't figure out if the original one WAS kind of awkward, or if it was just me. Are there any other videos from this particular production? Anyone? Anyone?

  • i love her voice soo much!

  • This woman is AMAZING! Or at least, at this song, she is.

  • Wonderful!

  • I'd have liked to see this live. It's beautiful.

  • I love her doing this song! I usually hate this song on the score... but I love her interpretation.

  • so incredible.

  • She's good, but she needs to enunciate. She's like, sidding rather that sit-ting. It's annoying.

  • @youmomhowdo

That's bugging me too. If I didn't already know the words, I wouldn't know what she's singing about.

  • @youmomhowdo You think? Celia is like the qyeen of enunciation! Maybe its not as perfect in this song, but I think its really good!

  • @youmomhowdo

I don't know, I think she's enunciating rather well... Especially with my biggest pet peeve which is 'chewing' on a lyric like How is IT YOU... But she always makes sure to pronounce the T and the Y perfectly

  • @youmomhowdo How she said jubilate bothered me too :(

  • @youmomhowdo Yeah I heard "Bla bir" lol

  • @youmomhowdo I don't know, it sounds almost like she's just not completely sure of the vowel sounds she needs to be using. Because most of it was really good, there were just a couple moments where it was incomprehensible.

  • I saw the play at casa manyana! It was AWESOME! I got mrs. lovett to sign my rolling pin!!! ^^ Johanna is life!

  • How did you get anybody to sign anything? I was also there, and there definitely wasn't a signing. At least, not that I saw.

  • I stayed for an extra 30 minutes, when they came out. ^^

  • Ah, I see. Did the woman who played Mrs. Lovett really have red hair? I couldn't quite tell if it was a wig or her real hair even though I was on the second row. XP

  • so did i!!! i just went last week :) got front row rickets for my birthday

  • ouh im so fucked...

im not a soprano and im suposed to sing this > >...

maybe i should reject the paper @ .@ or ask for a contralto part xD

btw, amaizing voice, thanks for sharing the videoo

  • omg amazing! perfect!

  • wow

  • beautiful voice!

  • very good, i like this version and i think this is the best from the versions i heard

  • Amazing. Just... wow. She has a beautiful tone and the vibrato isn't heavy. It just sounds perfect.

  • i like this better than the movie's johanna

  • I like her better than the 1982 production. She's clearer, easier to understand, and her tone is powerful yet still that subtle submission that is required of Johanna. The 1982 Johanna still has a fantastic voice, yes, but I think her voice is more appropriate for opera, not for musicals.

  • do you think I'd be able to get away with stealing her voice for my audition for Johanna?

  • SHES AMAAAAAZING!!!!

  • Awesome Voice

  • Wow, she is so talented. What a beautiful voice!

  • The quality of this video is not so good. But it is already soooo beautiful. I am sure it will be heavens listening in live.

  • Whoa...

  • What an amazing voice! O_O

  • I really like her voice. And her dress. :)

Her voice is different and COOL AS HELL.

  • YES. I like her voice.. THAT is what it should sound like..not too heavy, and very controlled. PRETTY - that is what it should be, period.

  • I agree completely!

And when I say "different"...what I really meant was not light and airy and weak. It's heavy, but not too heavy...I just love those kind of voices. Because no matter what they sing, it sounds cool, and just beautiful. And it always shape, it's not light and weak and flat. :)

  • That's a good way to describe it, it's SHAPE. Yes.

  • Exactly: shape without being manipulative. Some people have such strong voices that they manipulate every vowel, every tone...this is NOT an example of vocal manipulation. :)

  • It's different in that she doesn't let it get shrill up top there. :) It's nice, isn't it?

  • best version ive found so far... i love her voice ^_^

  • Thank you so much for posting these!! I've been trying to find clips of this performance, but there are very little on Youtube, so thank you!! Do you happen to have any of Christine Baranski by any chance? I noticed you have Kiss Me and Epiphany, so thank you for those as well!!

  • I like this version better than Betsy's and Jayne's. Is it just me or in the movie does Jayne sing a little higher than the original score? Maybe her voice is just really young. I dunno but Jayne's sounds higher to me, high but beautiful nonetheless.

  • it's her voice, I think, she has a very young, pure voice, so it's sounds higher ^^

  • She's perfect! I started watching the OBC Johanna and I couldn't finish because she was so overbearing! Celia is just beautiful and so is her voice!

  • I'm glad you like Celia, but but by the OBC Johanna you mean Betsy Joslyn from the recorded stage production? She wasn't the OBC one, Sarah Rice was. I just wanted to clarify because Sarah doesn't deserve to be mistaken for Betsy Joslyn. :D

  • @missmusicalmaggie

But Betsy tickles me in places I have never been tickled in before.

  • @missmusicalmaggie luv ur username my name is maggie 2!

  • Not overbearing, not too weak, just the right amount of vibrato, excellent consonants--great version!

  • She's one of the better Johannas I've seen, some of them are just too comical to be taken seriously for the troubled Johanna

  • DARN. What a versatile voice! Finally someone I absolutely aspire to be like; neither just a classical soprano or belter, but both! And a fabulous actor as well!

  • Wow, she did an A M A Z I N G job singing this song :D

  • So lovley, I never heard a good verson of this beside the movie

  • super

  • Her voice gives me goosebumps lol.

It's stunning, she's a very very good Johanna.

  • amazing voice :O

  • very good, not too over "BLAAH" if you know what I mean ! very nicely executed

  • shes a great johanna!

  • She is soooooooooooooooo good!

  • Why is it so SLOW?!
