killing off kirk was unnecessary and wrong. however, leaving a means for kirk to come back briefly for a sequel would have worked better and made sense. besides tying up lose ends with all the original cast members and creating new beginnings for the next gen would have made much better sense.

I read so many negative statements about "Generations" - Personally I liked the movie very much!!^^ Kirk`s death really touched me...they did a very good job here with the dramaturgy!! Just BECAUSE his death was so unspectacular made it hurt so much!! No minute long monologue while dying, no big funeral - he just passed away, buried under this steel frame!! That`s the picture I still remember after all these years!!

Wow. It's so fitting that he evokes the memory of JFK, because his answer is a Kennedy-esque evasion of the question. It sucks that he totally avoided your question, but on a positive note - that is the most coherent and insightful thing I've ever heard or read him say about the death of the Kirk character. It's an absolutely brilliant answer! It's an answer from a professional ACTOR (and a pretty nice person) who understood why he was really wanted for that film. So your implications in these comments are pretty dumb - and quite insulting, actually. Can you tell the difference between a character and the actor that plays IT (you'll notice my conventional use of the non-gender specific pronoun for a character)? Watch Boston Legal and forget about Star Trek, like Shatner did a long, long time ago.
