Does anyone have 'Hit & Run Love', from Heartbeats Accelerating to upload? That's a truly terrific song but the album has too many achingly sad moments for me to purchase it, I just can't. Would be Greatly appreciated...
I play "Matapedia" often -- followed by the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," "Shangri La," Annie Haslam's version of "Going Home," Leonard Cohen's "Song Long, Marianne," and Tom Waits' "Martha." The rest of the world disappears when these magicians begin to sing. I don't even allow anyone to speak while these songs play. Some people find peace in prayer. I find it listening to these songs. RIP Kate. Thank you for allowing our ears keep you close.
I have loved this song for such a long time. I finally found the lyrics for it, but would like the guitar chords for it. I didnt realise the link with Rufus and Loddon (another favourite 'Primrose Hill') What joyous music they must have played together
When Matapedia came out i could hardly wait to buy it. This song is my favorite on the album. I played this CD for everyone who came to visit! My love to all of Kate's beautiful family. Thankyou all.
I've been having my private memorial to the magnificent Kate, here in the rainy Bay Area tonight. This is my single favorite of her rich legacy of songs--from my favorite of their albums. RIP
I have been looking for one of her songs and I can't remember the name of it. The tune is stuck in my head. Part of the lyric goes (I think) and "he goes round and round"
In Canada they used to play the song on TV with an animated video of a lumberjack dude rolling along on a log.
I was first turned on to these lovely singers by hearing their original version of "Heart Like A Wheel" in about the early seventies. It's a very beautiful song. Best wishes to you, Gruffydd.
Yes, it is indeed a most lovely song missmabel. I had a lovely Aunt Mabel when I was a little boy in Llandudno. She always had a sweet smile on her face. She was very kind to me. It's my guess, missmabel ... that you're very nice too. Merry Ticklemas!
Missmabel, I think your train of thought is more likely to be correct. You're on the rail, gal. Whilst they were trying to catch a boat ... they were, in fact, racing a train ... but ... of course ... I could be disrailed on this ... toot! ... toot! What do Kate and Anna have to say about this? Greetings to one all from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.
Gruffydd, unfortunately, I haven't been granted a peerage ... as yet. Your name sounds Welsh. My mother was born in Penmachno, North Wales. She was a fluent Welsh speaker. I did most of my schooling in the Llandudno area. My wife thinks I deserve a peerage ... don't you ... dear?
The Matapedia is a river in Quebec. The song brings us back to Kate's youth when she and her boyfirend were racing to catch the ferry - racing along beside the river.
the beloved song of my best friend wolfgang, who died 2008, i hope so much that he can meet you kate , and soon i can meet you both, love forever

Kate,
may you always run in our hearts...
there's a big empty space here without you.
with hope to meet you on the other side
on that shore of white sand...
peace and starry nights,

this song was for me, newly arrived in Canada at the end of the nineties, a priceless key to the soul of my adoptive country.
still today I hear it and I literally feel the mighty St Laurent river, flowing stubbornly Eastward, powerful and endless.
thank you for your gift, Kate and Anna.
rest in peace, Kate.

Good Lord Jarrahnut! Another McGarrigle fan in Western Australia. For the last twenty plus years I've had to fly the flag on my own.
Matapedia is where it started for me, a long and fantastic voyage. Kate and Anna you are awesome.

I always wondered if it was a train running alongside the Matapedia river, because the song has the "chug a chug a" rhythm of a train.
missmabel 2 years ago
@missmabel Nope, they're in a car, trying to make it to the ferry. That's the landscape ticking by at a mile per minute, along with the time.

And of course the first girl mentioned in the sing is the fine musician Martha Wainwright (the daughter of Kate).

I've enjoyed this number for about twenty-odd years but ... will someone please tell me ... was is this "Matapedia"?
Jarrahnut 2 years ago
The "Matapedia" is a River. I can hear the flow of a river in the beat, I think. Anyway, it is one of my favourite productions and very emotive.

Six years after Heart Beats Accelerating comes Matapedia. Thanks Kate and Anna! It was well worth the wait.

Kate and Anna's performance of this song is beautiful and remarkable.
Thank you for including the lyrics Miss Mabel.

Then the "big middle-aged hands" must have been those of Loudon Wainwright III since the song seems autobiographical.

No it was the guy back home she *didn't* marry at a reunion after Martha had grown up....
