See, I don't disagree with you that people have different opinions, and diversity is a good thing. My concern is whether or not they can rationally justify their opinions, especially when their opinion is that someone else owes them something. In the case of modern day reparations, there is just no logic that I can see in the case of advocates.
I personally don't look at as if someone owes someone else, but I do think decendants should be compensated for the work/labor of their ancestors. Not money, but a free college education perhaps, free housing. That sounds rational to me. Others have benefited for decades from the fruits of our ancestors labor, financial/ecomomically. It's fine that you think there is no logic to the situation. But I happen to think that there is logic regarding this issue.
My problem with reparations in a nutshell is this. If America offers a free college education to all black children who met some set of requirements, then why should it not do the same for white kids? Would you say a white child deserves that just as a black child does? Reparations would say we aren't all equal. They would say we don't have opportunity. It's obvious opportunity is not equal, but it's not limited to race. In America you can be what you make yourself, right?
If the ancestors of those white kids you of were descendants of those brought to this country against their will, then the answer to your question is most definitely yes. Those who have benefited from the labor of our ancestors for decades have not shared the wealth. Now, that to me is saying that we are not all equal. In this country one can be what they want or choose to be, but people of color, especially our people, will have a much tougher challenge.

I'll be honest. Where I live, we've forgotten about slavery and moved on.
Slavery was made illegal over here for almost a full century before the Americans hopped on the bandwagon, but largely, over here, the vast majority of educated people have moved on.
On another note - Your video was the most passionate response to that racist speech that I've yet seen. It also had a little humour in it, which was appreciated. Not half bad!

Here is a legal tidbit about inheriting your parents debts. Legally the only way a child is responsible for their parents debts is if the child held a stake in the profits of the debtor. What this means is that the descendants of the slave owners did profit from their parents failure to pay their debts to African Americans and are "legally" responsible for these unpaid debts. This fact has never been addressed from this legal perspective.

Also to add to that, a large number of white Americans today are descendents of the Europeans who immigrated into America during the Progressive Era, AFTER slavery was abolished so neither they or their bloodline had anything to do with slavery. My concern is whether or not they can rationally justify their opinions, especially when their opinion is that someone else owes them something. In the case of modern day reparations, there is just no logic that I can see in the case of advocates.

I personally don't look at as if someone owes someone else, but I do think decendants should be compensated for the work/labor of their ancestors. Not money, but a free college education perhaps, free housing. That sounds rational to me. Others have benefited for decades from the fruits of our ancestors labor, financial/ecomomically. It's fine that you think there is no logic to the situation. But I happen to think that there is logic regarding this issue.

If America offers a free college education to all black children who met some set of requirements, then why should it not do the same for white kids? Would you say a white child deserves that just as a black child does? Reparations would say we aren't all equal. They would say we don't have opportunity. It's obvious opportunity is not equal, but it's not limited to race. In America you can be what you make yourself, right?

Those who have benefited from the labor of our ancestors for decades have not shared the wealth. Now, that to me is saying that we are not all equal. In this country one can be what they want or choose to be, but people of color, especially our people, will have a much tougher challenge.

Does that mean that every child in that family will get a handout forever? At some point it would be an insult to me that I was being handed everything, without doing anything.
