UP had better keep these vintage SP machines on hand and in excellent working order....even UP's own equipment wasn't up for the task - not surprising that SP knew how to do the job best, after all it was their line originally
WOW! Now that was worth braving the road, snow and storm for. I missed this by a week, had to fly back home to NZ but wish I could've stayed for this. Stunning, absolutely stunning, I'm very jealous you got this opportunity. To those complaining about the snow on the lens... lol. I've been in a Donner blizzard and to get anything is a miracle! I'm running out of superlatives here :-)
Good clip although the snow on lens was a bit annoying...but then again, it gives the viewer an idea of the conditions. Listening to the B unit hammering away and that ghostly whistle was magic!
Couldn't remove snow from the lens because the storm just kept blowing snow right back into it. I tried several times before it arrived and it was futile. The lens had to be pointed right into the wind in the direction of the rotary. You get what you can under those conditions. It was in the middle of a storm - not in a studio.
Wow, this is absolutely awesome!! Great shots, don't really know how you even got out to get this but thanks for some awesome views of "the monster" in action!! Can't believe the depth of that snow "trench" the train is moving through!!
Okay, figured it out. LOL that's me on the very far right from 4:32 to 5:30 under the tree branches! I was the last one in our group of five standing closest to the Soda Springs Grade crossing!
Where exactly at Soda Springs were you? Just beyond the curve West of the grade crossing? That is where I was too but I think just behind you at the end of the curve that leads to the straight-away to the SS grade crossing. I know we foamers were blending in with the trees during the near white-out conditions Saturday afternoon but I can't even make out bodies on the right at the end of your video where I am pretty sure five of us are standing!!!
VERY COMPLIMENTS FOR AMAZING VIDEO!!!GREAT AMERICAN WORK!!!from dolomiti mountains veneto north east italy!

Is that a steam rotary? Awsome vid of the snow removal action!
nkproad777 10 months ago
@nkproad777 No, all UP rotaries have been converted to Diesel. Steam is only produced for defrost and anti-ice purposes and for the whistle.
Usually the rotaries contained a double tandem steam engine, or a triple expansion marine like engine - but this has been removed
