  • Ok NP I accept what I see but it's orbiting a star that will last only 700mn years then it will go nova and kill everything on earth 25 years later. GREAT! Cuts our survival by 3bn years!

By that time we would have evolved beond self awareness as we are now and reverted to the level of Baboons if we are lucky..

If we are intelegent we would store our DNA (sperm & eggs) to de-evolve humanity at lateral points for protection of our intelegence and achivements!

  • doesn't have to be a planet.

  • @Supuhstar Doesn't have to be a star its orbiting around either.

It could be a piece of jesus toast with the gods eye trying to spread the butter.

    You just never know.

  • @corthew It's probably caught in the gravity of the nebula's center star, so I think it's safe to assume it's orbiting that, if only very slowly.

  • 0:05

    Oh mah gaaaaawdy, tis Sauron.

  • It was a collaberation of more than one country that took down Germany ..i mean the nazis.

  • hope the end will come soon not 2012

  • wow cause thats not depressing at all

  • sad that most asstonomers fail to realize that this is the work of the Lord our God.

  • for crying out loud there is no god , -.-'

why do peopel still belive this 2009 year old lie ?

  • and how many thimes have you started it ? ;)

  • The answer: NEVER!

The U.S. only entered Europe after it had been destroyed and Russia had done most of the hard fighting against the Nazis . Even then your motivation was only to stop the Russians taking over Europe. (i.e: self interest).

In WW1 the US entered with a small amount of troops in 1917 three years after the war had started.

Its easy to play superhero when you have two massive oceans to separate you from your enemies and the safety of your homeland is not at stake.

  • hemm... german here. and what the fuck how did this video begin as a talk about nazis? let it go for fucks sake yeah we made a mistake so did the usa so knock it off.

  • Awesome!

  • looks like saurons eye :P

  • I see you

  • O ya and the white spec represents the sun which is blocked out to cancel its light in the image, im not sure of the exact proses though.

  • Let's just say, Nasa's reverse psychology mirror cracked!

  • Few here seem to appreciate the phenomenal technical difficulties or the incredible historic implications of these images. Visual proof of the existence of other planets is the required proof for the potential of life to exist elsewhere. To a generation brought up on Star Trek and Star Wars this may seem almost trivial. It is anything but. For the very first time in human history we can finally believe we are not alone. Instead of merely imagining it. Science Fiction has suddenly become fact.

  • and your scientific basis for saying that is what steven?

  • based on the scientific data in my asshole. who the fuck is steven?

  • wasnt paying attention - cookie, its not a super nova.

    Your asshole fails

  • Erm, that's not a supernova. That's an image taken using light on non-visible scales. The magic is that you see more.

Crazy, eh? Helps if you don't spew out stupid nonsense like a retard.

  • So they found a new solar system. Big fucking deal.

  • No, the amazing thing is that they took a picture of a planet many lightyears away. Given you're grand demonstration of ignorance thus far, I'm not going to explain why that's awesome because you will continue to beat your head against the keyboard and say phenomenally stupid things.

  • It is not awesome. It does not surprise me. And neither would seeing Jesus.

  • Yes, it is awesome. The star its orbitting is 130 light years away. Given as you seem to be a complete idiot and are ignorant of the scale of the universe, I'm not going to explain *why* that's awesome. Just run along blissfully stupid and enjoy not knowing shit.

  • Look dude. I took a class in astronomy and had to use physics equations to figure out the time it took for Charon to rotate around Pluto given light speed, distance, and time. Big fucking deal. The Cremaster Cycle is awesome. Figure that shit out and get back to me.

  • Oh, an astronomy class? Oooh my, yes. That does quite make you an authority on this. Crazy thing is that I *also* took astronomy classes, so big fucking deal, skippy.

  • And btw...wow. I didn't know existentialists would believe anything was awesome since existence proceeds essence. I believe I do see a contradiction, here. And besides that, existentialists are the most pitiful people on the planet. Please don't kill yourself.

  • I'll just assume you're ignorant of the fact that there are many philosophies that have had the term "existentialist" applied to them, and that I consider myself an existentialist for a relatively small reason. I do not accept what every existentialist philosopher has to say.

And the last sentence comes right out of left field. Perhaps you were thinking of nihilism?

  • cookiesonsteve,

i am taking astronomy as a gcse, and hopefully further than a gcse, and i have studied astronomy for many years beforehand. I find it amazing that they have seen this planet. I deduce from your comments that you are either extremely boring, or have no respect for other peoples emotions. So im not going to say you dont have a life, just that its not an adequate one by anyone's standards but yours.

  • Oh, but on the contrary, I have extremely deep emotions, just not for astronomy. I'm more interested in things that we can not prove. Otherwise, thanks for the enlightenment.

  • that aint no star thats my cat's eye ball

  • so there are these specs in the background that are not changing between the two images.

Is it right to assume that these dots are background stars and galaxies and are NOT part of the Fomalhaut's "Kuiper" belt / "Oort" cloud?

I mean if they were, wouldn't they also move somewhat between the takes?

  • I believe they are artefacts from the removal of the glare from the star.

  • hmm.. wouldn't be weird that the artifacts of glare removal are the same on both images take 2 years apart?

I am sure have to correspond to some objects in the universe. Whether they are in that system or beyond it is the question.

But if they are artifacts of the glare as you suggest, could you explain why they match?

    Thanks.

  • I don't think they showed all of both images, only change in position of the planet.

  • Aw. Baby Pictures. 8D

  • The white "thing in the center is the newly formed star, the intense solar wind is clearing lighter gasses like hydrogen helium argon...etc with that long of an orbital period i doubt it will be supporting any life in the next billion years or so/just sayin

  • drscience: Stop talking out of your ass. You're full of bullshit.

  • its truly a great vidio but where is it located and what scientific break true is this??

  • i saw that from my house, i dont need a telescope! jk

  • Big discovery =]

  • no audio

  • Are they gonna do a video about the guy that got cured from aids?

  • What exactly is that eyeball thing? Is the star in the very middle and the rest left over from forming or something?

  • It looks very creepy indeed.

    It's a dust cloud from a supernova.

  • amazing!

  • Just saw this on APOD as well. Really cool!!!

  • This is so damn awesome.

    The future is upon us.

  • only way to find life is to look`love this stuff

  • this is huge! we're on the outside looking in

  • its like detecting a counterfeit bill, looking for the slightest change

  • damn.

  • wow;

    pretty cool

  • awesome!

  • sauron

  • Awesome. They actually saw the thing itself, not just its effect.

  • i hought it was impossible to see another planet orbiting a star cuz of the stars blinding light

  • With modern imagine processing you can filter out the bright light sources. I think it's amazing, we can see planets orbitting distant stars, and we can also see the micro and sub-micro.

I love the fact that I'm living in a world where all this is possible.

  • Probably not home to life. It's VERY far away from the host star and from the image it looks like the Cat's Eye Nebula. Nebula are nova or supernova remnants....not the best place for continuing civilizations or life in general.

  • when u think about it that moving dot could be home to greater civilizations just like ours! they may even been watching us for a while and wondering if our moving pale blue dot could support life?

  • 130 light years away ,thats the depressing thing about space so much out there ,too big for us to actually explore it .

  • well...maybe some day! =)

  • "well...maybe some day! =) "

well you could be right , but iv got to thinking there must be other intelligent life out there , and the only reason we have not been contacted is the vastness of space

  • plus the univers is some how expanding

  • lol..scullyy..

  • 0:00-0:07 Eye of Sauron!

  • This is pretty good.

  • awesome video

  • Is this the first REAL image of an extrasolar planet?

  • not even close

  • Yes it is. As you know, others have only been calculated by gravitational deviation of stars

  • That's what I thought. Not some computer simulation based on indirect observation, but a real image.

  • Yes and here is the 2nd, taken on November 13th 2008; it's sporting 3 of them!

    upload wikimedia org/wikipedia/en/d/d6/HR_8799_planetary_system_photo jpg

    change spaces for dots(.)

Or just search for HR 8799

  • that is amazing, how did anyone figure that was a planet? it must have been such an extraordinary find

  • they saw it following a curved path. but it most definately is a incredible find

  • I know it's like the first person that founded the dookie boner. How did he ever know what he was looking at?

  • i hate you so much thumbs down
