Patti, Madonna and Elena Roger, are far, the bests evita's. Every single note is difrent in some way, but they still being the bests. Love U girls, you are such and example.
@Evolutionaryera I find that Patti has obviously a better voice but that she is just shouting this song with too much vibrato. I find Madonna's to be more emotionally honest, and I think she was better for the film, whereas the theatre is far more dramatic and showy so Patti is better for the theatre.
@Evolutionaryera Well, IMO, Madonna did an amazing job on the movie. And Patti did great on broadway (or the west end, or whatever). But it's important to notice that Theatre and Movies are WAAY different genres. Madonna did a femenine and delicate Evita, while Patti did it less delicate and more powerful. It's true that Patti has an AMAAAAZING voice (better than Madonna's) but I don't think she did a better Evita, just a more "theatrical" version. IMO
@Evolutionaryera They choose Madonna because Madonna was the biggest female musician of the 90's and and and...she basically was Evita, people either loved her or hate her and considering how hard this score is to sing Madonna did a phenomenal job and deserves her props, no one can compare to Patti Lupone who I adore, and Madonna thankfully wasn't trying to be Patti or her performance would have been horrible
It's called belting. Something Madonna can't do. LuPone was dynamite in this role. She owns it. You obviously don't know shit about theatre if you listen to vocals so closely instead of studying a fine acting performance.
What the hell has Madonna got to do with it? I never mentioned Madonna.
It is musical theatre. Singing is an important part of it, by its very definition. Elaine Paige could act the part while singing. I was at the UK tour recently, and the woman playing Eva (Rachael Wooding?) was acting and singing. She was an amazing Eva.
LuPone may well be a good actress, but she is not as good as other Eva's I've seen or heard because she shouts instead of singing.
Elaine Paige?!? One of the worst actresses to ever set foot on stage?! She screeches and has no control over her voice! Plus she over-emotes - she's a terrible actress.
LuPone is the best Eva - she owns the role and always will.
Ah, so now you know I'm not one of the Madonna fans you're going to criticise my taste in Elaine Paige.
Do you know what, if you're bitter that Patti LuPone didn't get the role in the movie, then that is no problem of mine.
I watched this and my opinion is that she shouts rather than singing, which is a fact. She does not "own" the role. You might think she's a great Eva, but I do not.
How about trying to construct an arguement? I am at least attempting.
I'm not a Madonna fan, I adore Patti Lupone. But that doesn't mean that I think she would have been good in the movie. I think she is incredible here and it wouldn't have been the same if she had done the movie
LuPone would have changed her acting style for the movie. She understands that theatre acting isn't the same as film acting. This performance on film wouldn't have worked, no. But she would've been a hell of a better Eva than Madonna.
Madanna and Paige were both terrible in the role. fact. LuPone owns the role and always will. fact.
Eva was evil, racist and power-hungry. Madonna made Eva sympathetic, LuPone plays her how she should be played.
and no I'm not bitter that LuPone didn't get the role for the movie (though she would've done a better job). It's not as if I worship Patti she was absolutely terrible in Sweeney Todd and Sunset Boulevard. Angela Lansbury was a better Lovett and Glen Close was a better Norma Desmond.
Madonna was not as bad as people say - she did not have the vocal range, but she did a good performance with what she has. I don't like her, but calling her terrible when she was decent isn't right.
As for Elaine Paige..well, I'm as likely to change my views of her as you are to change your view of LuPone. ;)
There are many sources which state that Eva Peron wasn't as evil as you say. While you may not agree with this...(continued)
I would recommend some posts on Eva Peron's IMDb page. There is a very intelligent poster there who argues that Eva wasn't as evil as the musical portrays her. It's an interesting read, even if you don't agree with their view. :)
Anyway, I am of the view that the original West End version is the best. You can disagree with that if you want, frankly I will never see what people like about LuPone as Eva. But we could keep this going forever.
Daniel Jordan: if you wish to make a comment about the "EVITA" play, do it. we can disagree, or even agree about the talent in Mrs. Luponne, Mrs. Valeria Lynch, Mrs. Julie Covington (the best for me) but PLEASE do never speak about the real Eva Duarte. she was NOT racist or even evil. i have no idea how somebody can make such a stupid statement.
so please, do not speak about a lady who's part of a country's history. of course, that will only be possible if you respect other countries history...
wtf are you talking about? I can talk about Eva all I want. You obviously don't know anything about her if you don't think she was corrupt, evil and power-hungry.
wtf, Eva was just as anyone else is, real. there is as much good to her as bad. pick up a copy of EVITA FIRST LADY by john barnes, EVA PERON by nicholas frasier and marissa narvaro, EVITA THE WOMAN WITH THE WHIP (very one sided) by mary main, or EVA PERON a biography by Alica duvouirs. Obviously your research of the real woman hasd been limited at best. If you are going to state an opnion as fact, at least educate yourself b4 you do so.
And? Evita was based on a novel which has proven quite historically inaccurate when it comes to Eva's quest for power as well as her indiscretions while climbing to the top. A book was even released in order to disprove some of the accounts in the Lloyd Webber version of her life- I suggest you pick it up.
Eva Peron spent hours with the sick, the homeless, and the impoverished. Why don't you look at someone's good qualities for once?
Patti rocked in Sunset and Todd?? You obviously don't have a CLUE what you're talking about. She SUCKED as Lovett and Desmond - not a patch on Lansbury or Close.
And honey, I know my history. I know more about Eva than just one "book". I've studied her life sweetie. She was evil.
I think sucked is taking it a bit too far. I also personally prefer Lansbury and Close but LuPone didn't suck. Did you actually get to see her on stage? I did for both and she was excellent. As for Eva Duarte, I agree that if you really were famiiiar with her life as you say you are you wouldn't call her evil. She wasn't necessarily a saint either but the criticisms lobbied at her in the biography The Woman With the Whip (the basis for the musical) have largely been discredited.
I remember the Simpsons doing a parody of this song with the teachers at Lisa's school dressing her up so she could be a bad-ass class president. And when I saw Evita with Julia Murney last summer I freaked out when this song came on (since I didn't know anything about Evita at the time) because I remembered the Simpsons joke. Hehe
I'm trying to find out more about Patti's intepretation of Eva, especially how 'Waltz for Eva and Che' was acted in the production she starred in.
I have seen many diffirent intepretations of the song; Eva and Che dance together in some productions but dance apart in others, some end with Che backing off slowly, others end with him being chased off the stage by guards etc. etc.
Did anyone here see Evita on Broadway in 1980? If so, can you please give details about the waltz?
Oh and I like your use of capital letters and punctuation marks also.
And... do you know me personally? :/ Do you stalk me without my knowledge or are you just making a prejudiced judgement that I am unintelligent? I am actually a highly intelligent person thankyou. Especially for my age.

uhmm I don't go around bragging that I'm highly intelligent. I was responding to a comment saying I WASN'T very intelligent from someone who doesn't even know me.

Hey, watch it, I am a typical citizen of the United States, and I must say I am proud of the country I live in. It is not perfect, it never will be, but I love it anyway. However I see your logic behind it, sadly it is true.
Love that ending. Argentina's brand of STAR QUALITY! The way some actresses do it, smiling and holding it too long irks the hell out of me. This Eva is no smiles, she's a power-hungry force to be reckoned with. I'd much rather see her running a nation than Madonna.
Well, i dont think patti has a vulnerable enough voice. Eva Peron was of course, strong, ambitious, and manipulative. But she had a vulnerable side to her.
True, she did. LuPone does camp up the gusto and downplay the vulnerability, but she is decidedly more mellow on the Lament and reprise of Don't Cry For Me...If she had the chance to sing "You Must Love Me", that would have helped develop her softer side.
Gah, the part where she launches into "I'm their savior/That's what they call" and hits that note and flings her arm above her head, I get chills every single time. She is a force of nature.
It's so true. When I played the role of Evita a few years back, I stole every single move she did... because if you're going to copy someone, copy the best. LOL!
As a person who has had over 100 clips removed, trust me, it all starts with a whistle-blower...someone that supports equity's agenda. somebody notifies equity who in turn files a complaint with youtube and viola! the clip is gone.
We should all use keepvid or something to download the FLV version, to keep it preserved at least so we can watch it after its removed by the damn union people.
She makes me think this is exactly how Eva Peron would have sounded if she had sung her own life story. Just magnificent! And what a voice, and what a performer!
this is musical theatre history. this performance. this song. patti. i personally believe this is the most powerful performance of any performer of all time
I could be wrong, but I have to seriously doubt it's Patti or her people that keep pulling the Evita clips down. Why would they concentrate only on Evita? Aren't there plenty of clips from other shows she's been in that have stayed up for years?
It's not Patti taking them down. I corresponded personally with Patti LuPone a while ago and, while she certainly did not say she supports the clips being posted on YouTube, she expressed happiness that someone filmed the Broadway performances, saying, "That's the only footage we have of our Evita." Patti herself does not own the rights to the music, the stage production, the footage, any of it. She portrayed the character but does not own the copyright.
I think that every time they make a new show they should put it on film and hide it until after the show closes. then while the show runs the show still sells tickets but the show does live on in the end. seeing all these evita clips up makes me wish they had done that... or that patti made musical movies.
This is my clip. I have posted the whole show over the last few years, but keeps being removed by Equity, not by Really Usefull, by I an sure by Patti's people. Only HER stuff seems to get removed and then all the others i have. I think Patti has a fan that keeps blowing the whistle...
F**k the Really Useful Group too! They have not had a major hit in 20 years! Will they ever again? Maybe they will with THE SOUND OF MUSIC! How classy! Think it will be a hit? NOT!
Thanks for posting this! F**k Actor's Equity! How many of these people are we gonna even hear about again besides Patti? They should be grateful we are watching this! Do you have any of the other Evitas on video? Derin, Loni, or Flo?
I love Patti Lupone as Eva (she is joint first with Louise Dearman 2008 UK Tour) i preferred Patti's 2979 eva when she frst started than her 1981 Last performance .. ho this is right in the middle and i think i love this now .. tho this is my Fave song from the show lol
I don't like her accent.
