Yes, it is said that Idi Amin was the only ever illiterate to ever hold power in any country in modern history. I don't know if that is true, but most agree he was a simple man who had a boyish charm, and used that and loads of luck to end up leader of Uganda.

I also seem to recall lots of Arab leaders liked his ruthless politics, and he was a known anti-semite. They probably financed him during his reign.
