Simcity 5 ( I mean simcity... Why can't they put a 5 or 2013 at the end) is online only through Orgin. From what it sounds, it sounds awesome, but I'm not willing to pay 60 or 75 dollars on it! Who the hell thought of those prices?!

This is one of my favorite reviews of yours, largely because I had never even heard of this game.

Hopefully the multiplayer in next year's promised Sim City will work just as well as this seems to.

I have this game, my parents bought me many many years ago by accident.... :D It is possible to mess around in the connecting process and you can play alone, but you still have to buy the land, so it's not that great.. and I don't think it's worth getting this now if you're not a collector cuz 2k DOS version is much mor easier to run now than this.

Sim City 4 originally had a form of multiplayer. It was hosted by EA and you basically started a new city or logged into an open city that was not already occupied. It was asynchronous but still multi player. It felt like it was implemented as an afterthought though. Since SC4 was also a bitch to play normally it was also very hard to do the multiplayer.

Back in the bad ol' days of windows 95, did a sloooooooowwwwwww telephone line modem helped to deliver a decent enough internet speed to run SC2K Network Edition without huss or fuss?

Cities XL failed because they had you pay a subscription fee for online play, otherwise the game would have been fine, but because there subscription idea failed they believe all hope is lost for online sim games so they wont even try anymore, its like there screwing it up on purpose.

Man this sucks I just recently paid like 50$ to get my copy fix and when I installed it, it said that my operating system was not supported and I read on the the Internet that I need windows vista since I can't play it on my windows xp laptop.

4. choose (Windows 95)

5. than click ok.

The game is really fun, but at this point you have to be a fan of the original to get into it. I never played 2000 and was alienated by how archaic everything was... Not to say I actually have a real copy, theres a pirate torrent of it my friend downloaded.

Its highly experimental and this is the kind of game that a fresh out of college programmer like me can contemplate programming. The game is rather buggy too, theres a glitch for infinite money if you buy and sell land repeatedly.

Used to play the crap out of this game by myself -- you can play it without other players. But the game is broken. If you buy a plot of land and put a railroad on it, you can sell it for more than the railroad and tile together costed.

I wish the network edition had done better. It would have been great if Maxis had set this up for online play so you could easily find people to play with. I have known about this game for years but never bothered to try because I didn't know any one who would play

I never was good in this game, but thanks god I had a cheat mode. After I entered a password I hat at once about 20.000.000 $ on my account, plugged down everything into plain, created a little river and builed a big metropolis... and before I ran out of money I used that cheat again... The game will always be on my mind.

@paavya There is no match-making or online play, it's only direct connection, LAN or direct IP connection. I don't know of but one or two people who have even played the game at all, much less still play it with any kind of regularity.

@FuzzyTurle I guess they're both isometric management strategy games, so that's comparable at least. Now that I think about it, there are several ways you could compare SC2K with the RCT games, though the *City games have never involved the depth of micromanagement that you get with RCT. If you like the RCT games you'd definitely enjoy the earlier Sim games, since they inspired many of the Tycoon games in both style and substance.

@majora1993 It does, but you'll need to know the IP address and other information of the other player. There's no matchmaking support or anything, just good old fashioned modem or internet connecting.

@HarryMatic Hehe, there aren't. It's not really "online" so much as it is a LAN game, though you can connect over the internet if you know the IP and such. I was playing with my brother who was here at the time, over a LAN.
