I know this ISNT Microsoft Windows but why that thing called Microsoft Windows? Oh yeah that wasnt windows but it is Windows 95 computer running on Windows 1.0
How much do YOU think this advanced operating environment is worth? That's awesome I'd love to get my hands on a Tandy 1000, but I'll guess I'll have to stick to my Tandy TRS-80 Model 100 :P or my Amiga
I had a 1000rl, I could never get windows to run on it but i did get dos 6.22 to run on it, had to boot with the rom dos first however, it came with a 20mb hard drive, I bought a 40mb for 350 dollars ouch, found out i could not use both drives with RLL interface, i also upgraded my video chip and my ram from 512k to 768k. I learned a lot on that computer
I just got out my old Tandy. It's still kicking exactly the same way as how I remember it did when I was a kid. It has all the things we put onto it still there, and the date was one day off. It is awesome!
@themaritimeman LOL, I felt the same way! I was like "Shit, this guy is commenting on something I said two years ago!", not to mention I was probably drunk :S
The Tandy was basically an IBM 286 based clone. It wasn't bad for it's time. The main problem with the early PCs was that the makers all had their own proprietary systems. Compac and Tandy were the worse offenders. You could only use their components and their programs.
@Bullettube ah u might want do some research first some tandy 1000's had a 80186 chip in them yes theer was an 186 cpu bak in the day and yes some had a 286 cpu in them aswell u might aslo do a google for deskmate and proly can get it today but an older version of it
OMG! That was MY computer 18 years ago! I didn't have "Microsoft" on mine. However, the DOS commands (change directories) and the load up screen are the same! WOW! I thought 20mb hard drive was too small, so I asked the Radio Shack guy to install 40mb; he laughed at me saying I would never need that much memory!
@eppinizer yeh but what was nice about those tandys is that it would boot up with out any bootup disks ie floppy disk or harddrives as they da a rom chip with an stripped down dos version on it that if u had a hard drive and it crashed u could still boot up and try recovering . computers today need that typ of chip for use as a failsafe boot option
Yeah that was also my first computer back in 1990. But mine had no hard drive at all, just a floppy drive. I upgraded the RAM from 512k to 768k later on, it cost $40 for the 256k chip.
Yes Radio Shack is still around. But no longer make nor own Tandy. Im not sure who bought it, but I think IBM bought it out. So it's no longer here nor there or anywhere lol
Radioshack UK was registered to another group/company when Tandy came to the UK, so they opted for the alternative name of Tandys. When the market declined a few years back, they sold there UK business to carphone warehouse who claimed to only have interest in carrying on with the business, but after flogging all the branded stock at rock bottom prices they closed the doors of all the stores and re-opened them as carphone warehouses. shame really - Maplin doesn't come close.
Windows really was poor back then compared to the Apple Lisa. Seeing Windows take me back have not used it for about 2 years moved to Ubuntu. but i am very tempted to try SUSE Enterprise
MS-DOS SHELL! That's what I was thinking of! Thanks. :) I didn't see the splash too well at first. Sorry about that. I see it now. It's blurry (not your fault, that's the way cameras are sometimes). So I coudln't make things out that fast.
I had no idea that they made Windoes 1.0 into MS-DOS Shell! LOL! It figures. Cool video though.
First it was DeskMate shown, then MS-DOS's GUI. not Windows 1.0 but somethign that came with MS-DOS. I forgot what it was called but it wasn't windows. Windows was different than this.
Well, the tandy was set to boot to deskmate by defualt, i exit that and go back to dos... and from dos i loaded windows 1.0, which looks amazingly like microsoft;s later release "MS-DOS SHell". But this IS windows 1.0 as you can see by the splash screen that shows up
@FuzzieDice Yeah, this is definitely Windows 1.01... Back then, the only icons you'd ever see were for ones representing minimized programs, MS-DOS Executive (Windows 1.01's file manager) had no support for icons. MS-DOS Shell is different. MS-DOS Shell also definitely did not have a Windows splash screen or Reversi. Which version of Deskmate was that?
Back when Windows wern't so violent. Those days suck.
Weegeeisgoingtokillm 1 month ago
Or i think Windows was existed in 1992's, MS-DOS in 1984 until 1990

Your hard drive wasn't memory, your RAM was. Also, Radioshack??? FAIL!
