I agree with his teaching about the spiderweb theory. I used to study shukokai for about 8 years before.... but this sweeping is a great technique which I seldom applied during my training.... which i have regretted..
Thank you for this video. Maai is the relevent time and space plus distance of two or more combatants. This is very important in Bujutsu and should be taught as kihon the base of one's martial arts training, so I would think. Osu
Great Analogy Sensei Lowdermilk! I have been doing the same thing for years, but I like the way you simplified it into this spider web concept. Well you have earned a new nickname "Spidey"! It works! Thanks for the TIP!
@jimmymoltesanti Well Jimmy most of the time your stance should be more neutral however when you shift back as the opponent attacks your stance becomes wider allowing you the chance to pull off the manuever.
And are we talking about a striking attack or a grabbing attack?
I appreciate that. I took up the martial arts because I was tired of being "punked". My sensei broke down the applications of kicks and sweeps that I applied once when attacked by 3 guys.
I did not beat them up, but he taught me how to "attack the attack", "stay on the move", and "stay on the outside", and it kept me from suffering a major beatdown...all because of simplification of techniques!
thats really impressive, 37 years... you must be like a wizard at Karate, have you ever had to use it to defend yourself, i reckon in 37 years you must have right?
no of course not i mean, you cant set up a fight it just happens, but if you're good at what you do, and from what i've seen it looks like you know how to use Karate effectively and you're experienced with it, i reckon it would look good if an attacker came at you and you used one of these techniques on him.
So....you just block an oncomming kick head on with...your...hand?...

Does this theory apply for using the rear leg for sweeping too? or only the front one?

I realy like the sistematic approach of the spiderweb theory,
but I have a question.
I come from a jiu jitsu background myself, and we're not used to standing as wide as the karate stance.
do you have experience with applying these techniques with opponents with a more ''neutral'' stance?
jimmymoltesanti 2 years ago
yes but don't be decieved by the stance in the demo because you could easily go from nuetral to deep stance
bjkick123 2 years ago
thanks for replying,
do you mean your opponent could easily find himself in a deep stance, so you can sweep him?
or do you mean you can easily go to a deep stance yourself, so that you can perform the sweep?
jimmymoltesanti 2 years ago
The latter.

Sensei Bruce is a great teacher. I appreciate how he breaks techniques down, so that even a child could understand.....Kudos Sensei Bruce!!!

Brilliant Sensei Bruce. I need to study more sweeps. Is it optimal to sweep before the advancing foot lands?
cerebralnation 2 years ago
Yes, I like to sweep when they think they can put their weight on the foot.
bjkick123 2 years ago
