@randomtrader1 It's called a death spiral because usually this exact type of ending happens and you usually can't recover from this type of failure. I've been reading and researching paramotoring as well lately and basically the way these guys recover is to use a special knife to cut away their main chute and then deploy a round backup chute.

paragliding is WAY more safe than non pilots would expect..... 100% of the time it is PILOT ERROR..always..if people wouldnt get intermediate syndrome and try to do shit they arent capapble of....thats when shit happens..showing off for a crowd will get you killed

In german it's just called "Steilspirale" - literally "steep spiral" because it will NOT go wrong if you stop it at least at around 600ft.

Seen the pro's do this has he? Pulling straight out at the last moment and climbing away on the energy.

Most people take at least two turns to recover from a spiral dive.

The last time I engaged in a full spiral was to get low, fast from over developing cloud in Greece. The GPS eventually gave me 47mph in the vertical. The centrifugal force was so hard I had to scream to keep breathing.

People faint doing this and never recover in time to pull back.

I hope he recovered well.

In my sport of skydiving, this is a killer. Happened to a friend of mine 4 years ago. If you enjoy extreme sports like I do....please be careful and use some common sense. Spirals are fun up high, but can kill you, or seriously f**k you up if you attempt them at a low altitude. BLUE SKIES

Just a quick question but 'Death Spiral gone Wrong' .... the name and dangerousness and sheer stupidity of the manoeuvre due to the unpredictable and invisible ground effects on air flow (wind) suggests 'Death Spiral' is supposed to kill the pilot and that fact he survived is the mistake here.

No he didn't. You can get into a locked in spiral where it takes active control to get out of it, this is probably an inexperienced pilot or he misjudged altitude attempting an impressive flare. He'll have broken his pelvis and probably a few more things with this bounce, maybe even his back.

He is ok, he is the best acro pilot for the last few years in Slovenia. This was on AcroCup in Bohinj few yars ago. He did it on purpose - ground spiral - long time in hospital but nothing broken. Inexperienced pilots doesn't fly wings like this one - UP Trango.
