  • Buddy...this is the real deal. None of the slick George Strait over polished product.

  • Hmg789 shut the hell up and just enjoy the song

  • Is it just me or does this hmg789 keep commenting the same shit over and over again. Other then that great song. I listen to it in my pickup all the time.

  • This is country at it's best. The country lifes prety simple and this song shows it. Today these 'country' singers frekin glorify what it is to live in a small town or on a farm. Lived on a farm my whole life ain't ever had what the todays country sings bout

  • Every time I hear this song it makes me sort of wish I lived in a small town myself.

  • @hmg789 oh and around my town anyway, farmers (which would be a lot of the population around a small town) make a pretty good amount of money! So economically, yeah you actually can make money in a small town! If you really want to stay and be a farmer that is. So people move due to the fact they want a different job instead of farming, not because of economy.

  • @jillrwargers yes and most of the farmland is owned already, or for sale at a high price, at least the good yield stuff....people leave town for better job and lifetime opportunities, and to get out of the "good old boy" system

  • @hmg789 YES EXACTLY!!!!!

  • @hmg789 you have to remember he's talking about teenagers who aren't drinking age so drinking alcohol is technically considered 'bad'. And when the lyrics say 'they're going 90mph to the city limit sign' he's not talking about Bobby and Lucy anymore, he's talking about the people leaving town! And the song was released around 1990. But the song itself doesn't have to take place in the 90s. It's supposed to be around the 60s, I think.

  • @hmg789 just enjoy the song!!! Nobody wants to read comments about how this doesn't fit and that doesn't work!! No offense but it's annoying.... It's just a freaking song!! If you don't like it then just don't listen to it!

  • Hmmm I live near at least 2 dozen towns that fit this and at least 2 of those towns have 30,000+ people in them. They just never got over being small towns. Pity they don't write songs like this much any more... they are very descriptive. A lot of people grew up in this kind of place. Either you're one of the 20% who move away or you stay your whole life. With nothing to do. Could be describing the south side of Chicago as easily as Nowhere Kansas. Hasn't changed in 100 years.

  • Gotta be bad just to have a good time? Wow, i drink a 6 pack of beer and a bottle of wine daily, and I dont even really drink....if thats being bad, i wonder what good is??

  • and when people leave town and never come back, my experience is that most of the natives in this town try to get jobs out of state due to none here, and never want to come back....as someone who is clearly from the northeast, i have found that Southerners do not even give a chance to outsiders, and do whatever possible to make sure the town is free from outta towners, thus never develop economically or (heaven for bid) socially......

  • "theres an Elvis movie on the marquee sign??" how the **** old is this supposed to be??? Has to be, cause you can maintain 90 MPH in a pickup truck, after putting in just a "dollars worth of gas".......

  • @hmg789 What are you, junior..twelve?

  • To any doubts about the time period in which this song takes place just listen to the first lyrics of the song. ''Theres an Elvis movie on the marquee sign.'' So theres an Elvis film playing at the local theatre so I am guessing this song takes place in the 1950s or 1960s.

  • What an amazing song, especially the lyrics, such as: bobby told lucy the world ain't round/it drops off sharp at the edge of town/lucy you know the world must be flat/when people leave this town they never come back. Genius.

  • @slownoman ya people leave town and never come back.......reason, economically......there is typically no future for anyone in these small towns, especially with their "no outsiders", good old boy system, which hinders advancement and thus forces anyone out who wants to make something of themselves, unless theyr related to the sheriff or judge....

  • as far as leaving town and never coming back, for whatever it is worth, my experience living in the south is that they highly do not welcome non natives to the area. I get mean looks when i drive with my NJ tag, as well as being jailed for not changing tags over...this is in paducah, KY but is typical of this alleged "southern hospitality"

  • I love how this Bobby manages to scrounge up a dollars worth of gas for his pickup truck, just to drive 90 mph and burn it all up....

  • Won tickets to see him in Gainesville, Fl and when i went to pick them up he was there in the backseat of a car! Got to say "Hey" and shake his hand...GREAT show!

  • That's a good find. That's the band I remember, with Scott Neubert and the late Keith Carper

  • this was back when Country music had acts like Hal, Lee Roy Parnell, T Graham Brown, Suzy Boggus, The O'Kanes, Radney Foster,,,,,what the hell happened? Now we got Taylor Swift....geez.......

  • yes NUBS you are the IDIOT....even in 1993 the price of gas was nearing a dollar a gallon.....DOUCHE..IDIOT......your parents are prolly related...

  • Perhaps it was referencing when gas was 25 cents a gallon. This was life in a small town, and it was great

  • @nubs1946

Yes! It is clearly referencing to a time that is not the present. HMG789 is too much of an idiot to figure that out (or read the title indicating the song was released in 1993). He's just a douche.

  • Song of the year? How are you even going to get a GEO METRO up to 90 MPH with a "dollars worth a gas", much less a big ol pickup truck.......there better be a gas station somewhere in that small town, perhaps within shootin distance of the theatre's Marquee sign.........

  • @hmg789

...because every other song includes nothing but logical reason?

I think your comment was a little unnecessary.

  • @launchpaad88 A LITTLE UNNECESAARY? I was being generous...this whole song is a logical flaw...hes doin 90MPH TO the city limit sign, if anything why wouldnt you be flyin AWAY from city limits.....especially with your 6 pack of beer and a bottle of wine.....

  • @launchpaad88 sure.....when Bobby is talking to Lucy he says that the world must be flat...cause when people leave town they never come back....even DOLLARS WORTH OF GAS BOBBY is using it in the metaphoric sense, and obviously you are not smart enough to see it.....(dummy)

  • @hmg789

What is it about the single dollar that upsets you so much?

  • @launchpaad88 IF you would take the time to READ my comments, you would see that he "put a dollars wortha gas in his pickup truck", then the very next sentence is that hes "goin 90 MPH down a dead end road"....I dunno about u, but iv never heard anyone in my life put in a dollars worth of gas and then burn it all up as quickly as possible......everybody's broke and Bobbys got a buck......now hes broke too, in a few seconds.....answered?

  • @hmg789

You need to educate yourself on symbolism, metaphorical language, and logical thought processing before you start anymore arguments. Give macroeconomics a peek as well.

  • @launchpaad88 got a degree in economics, most likely more education than you do

  • @hmg789

If you had any inclination of economic processes you would damn well know the difference in purchasing power of a dollar 18 years ago in comparison to that of today.

I bet this is the most class you've attended in a while--isn't it?

  • @hmg789 fair enough. wondered aboutthis myself. but idk what time they were referencing. nowadays no. maybe even early/mid 90's really no go there.

  • I remember staying up late one New Year's Eve (I believe it was 1990-91) to hear that this was the song of the year. Awesome!

  • The time, this song hit the charts, i had the chance to watch CMT un television .

I Love it now and I loved it then

  • Great song - folks in there 60's can even relate - $1 worth of gas was 4 gallons or more and a lot of money.. Put your change together boys - lets cruise..

  • @ljjbloes

Now-a-days we gotta empty out the ATM just for a tank!

  • Awesome Track Thanks For Sharing This..Many Many Stars***************** ))

  • ok im not even kidding!!! my step brothers godfather wrote this song! his name is bob... somthing!!! i know it says he wrote it all over that he wrote it but he didnt!! he lived in minong wisconson! he married lucy beckem in 1959... unfortunaltly they both have died. lucy died in 1996 bob died just a year ago. this song was played at his funeral. they bore to children, casey james (boy) and temprance francesca (girl). deny all you want but i know the truth

  • good memories

  • This is a great song, and he is a great artist--underrated as can be. I can't watch him do this song without swooning, which is an added bonus. ;)

  • @llrjour HE DIDNT WRITE IT!!! my brothers godfather did! i dont care what you say deny deny deny i know the truth! his name was bob he married lucy beckem in 1959! they had to kids casey and temperence. it wont say it anywere on the web but he died a few months ago and im not allowing him to go down without the credid of this son! we play it at least once a day in this house!! i dont care what you say i know the truth and it is that this uy is a dirty lier for taking credit for this beauty!!!!!

  • @annamiller1997 Did I say he wrote it? NOOOO. I said he is an underrated artist and it's a great song. Geez, go beg someone to believe your rambling point someplace else. I did not even say he wrote it, so friggen chill.

  • @annamiller1997 Take your prozac, nobody said that he wrote it... they said he did a great job singing it. (It was wrote by Pat Alger & Hank DeVito... I assume you're referring to Mr DeVito.)

  • song is catchy, but, good thing its a dead end hes doin 90MPH down, caus hes only got "a dollars worth of gas in his pickup truck".....hope the "small town" hes in has a gas station there. And with the "six pack of beer and a bottle of wine", wouldnt one be heading AWAY from city limits, rather than toward it.....so they can "howl at the moon, shoot out the light"................................

  • @hmg789 Several things.

    1. You need to look up the lyrics, as you seem to be confused as to what's actually being said.

    2. Yeah, a dollar's worth of gas in a kid's car. I grew up in a small town. Even in 1993 that was common. Maybe not a dollar, maybe two. Get you around just for a while.

    3. This song was popular not just because it was "catchy" but because it encapsulated small experiences by people who had grown up (or were growing up) in small towns.

  • @tacitgreen 1. i lookd up the lyrics, i know exactly word for word what he is saying,,,,,namely "a dollars worth of gas in his pick up truck"....."got a 6 pak of beer n a bottla wine"...."......"goin 90 miles an hour TO the city limit sign".......what am i missing???????

    2. how far will u get doin 90 mph with a f..kn dollars worth a gas.......in a PICKUP...not a geo metro

    3. prolly so

  • Just awesome! :)

  • ". . . the world must flat 'cuz when people leave town they never come back . . ."

Gawd I love this song. What a picture he paints. Timeless.

  • @pencilneck22 hell yea brother I nominate Mt. Airy NC baby wow

  • Fantastic song 5****

  • Goin' 90 mph down a dead-end road, did that last night :D

  • listen, we got one fan claiming song is about G.R. Texas, and one claiming upstate NY...who can be the first to solve the dilemma? Keep in mind there are towns in every state that the song can be applied to......especially drivin 90 MPH with only 1$ worth of gas?????

  • @hmg789, That's the beauty of the song. Everybody knows a town that he's singing about. Great stuff. I nominate Yakima, WA

  • this song is talking about Glen Rose Texas on saturday night god damn i hate this town but love it

  • I love the harmonies...lovely!

  • @valverdista Yup!!!!!!

  • fab track ! ...Love it !

  • Does this guy look like Billy Bob Thorton to anyone else????

  • I ADORE Hal Ketchum! What a velvet smooth, beautiful voice... I first heard him live in '93 at Greene Hall in Texas. I was in front, just a few feet away from him. Totally mesmerized.

Now, I'm NOT the groupie type, but if ever a man could tempt me... with his beautiful voice, handsome face and the way he would approach the microphone... totally seductive. I was jello.

I wish more people would post videos that date early 90's... Hal and I were both in our heyday then. Good times.

  • legend! love american country music,it was made for truckers

  • I think it's interesting to note that he plays the song a half-step higher in this live performance than it is in the recording (key of A instead of A-flat).

  • wow those eyebrows!

  • Hal came to Alaska in 93 with his then wife Terall, and stayed at my sisters house in Soldonta. I had the great pleasure of hanging with him for 5 days ! fished for Salmon, partyed. listen to his song around the fire.!!!!!he is the greatest guy......He came back about 4 years later and stayed with me in Anchorage a few days...WOW iT WAS AWESOME>>>>>>>>>

  • Great song!! He has some serious eye brows though!!

  • very classic country. He is coming to our town this weekend I think I will go catch the show

  • Anybody know where I can get a download of "She's a Woman" by Hal Ketchum? It's better than the Beatles version. Thanks

  • He is so amazing live. I even got to shake his hands!

  • That's probably one of the finest country/rock songs ever written. It captures the essence of almost everyone's childhood!

  • when was this filmed

  • What a HOTTIE!

  • Al Gore on bass!!!!

  • Now that you mention that...he does kinda look like him.

  • Yeah, but then he smiled and it spoiled the effect.

  • Good ole foot-tappin` country, a sound that`ll never die- if`n the good Lord`s willin` !!!

  • I agree with you 100%.

  • I met him when I was a little girl!

  • My girlfriend thinks Hal Ketchum is cute.

  • Your girfriend has good taste.

  • I'm not a fan of country but I love Hal Ketchum!!! This guy rocks.

  • Saw him play live tonight. He closed his set (prior to the encore) with this song. Unlike many artists, his voice is still every bit as good as it is here. He covered it all: country, rockabilly, R&B, folk, a cappella. This one had everyone up dancing including parents with their young kids all be-bopping. :) He even came and hung out at the edge of the stage afterward to just sit down and talk with the fans to hung around which was cool.

  • Headbangers for Ketchum:) wat a voice!!

  • Hal Ketchum is the shit.

  • Kinda like growing up in smal town USA in the 60's

  • my mom just found the tape!

  • of his tape 'past the point of rescute' recently. its in the car cassette player* forgot to add that

  • I love this song, to me this song conveys the wholesome, "back to basics" fum small town America has and how they really enjoy themselves.

  • Good song!

  • Lol he say his friend put a buck's worth of gas in his truck thats how you know this is old

  • I agree......I wish I could buy gas for that price.

  • It came out in 1991, so not "that" long ago...

  • I hear you. It costs $160 to fill my tank and I get 160 miles out of it. Arrrrgghhhhh

  • No kidding...that's about one-quarter of one gallon these days.

  • I saw an advertisement for this on one of my old monster truck tapes.

  • Absolutely marvellous song!!

  • Love this, Thanks.
