I seem to remember this synthesizer opening as far back as '77. My parents made the observation that this synth music was reminiscent of the "In Search Of" program theme (popular at the time this aired).
In 1976, the 11pm newscasts had a 5-note tympany bumper which aired inside commercial breaks (in between commercials). A few anchors I remember from this era were Roy Walkenhorst, Otis Turner, Gary Gerould and Tip Kindel.
That must be an early version of the "Where the News Comes First" musical signature. The modern one has the first three notes in ascending pitches, however.
I've always thought this open was strange and hypnotic. Glad to see it again after all these years. KCRA should drop the "KCRA 3 Reports" moniker they use today and go back to "Channel 3 Reports". It looks cleaner on-screen and sounds more classy.
