The problem was actually quite simple. The roman empire became too vast to properly maintain and the people of rome became convinced that rome was all that mattered. At one point in the late roman era the legions were disbanded because they where aparently ill suited to fighting in the hills of italy. Furthermore romans at one point ceased to exist outside of Rome and the roman empire was actually filled with the same people who would have been called barbarians 100 years before.

I observed that in RTW Barbarian Invasion, the Roman units no longer practiced the Testudo formation. Could anyone tell me why?

maybe because barbarian invasion storyline's much more recent future timeline... when the roman empires split up the fighting techniques probably changed a lot

what actually happened is that the entire western empire army was made up of barbarian mercenaries so they didn't have as good training and discipline than the earlier roman army.

i found that one EASY way to make the game much easier than it is supposed to is to kill all of your pagan generals, and convert all of your settlements into christian settlments, yes you nearly lose all of them, but once you retake them, they will have had time to convert entirely to christianity and you will have high public order. plus you can boost your treasury a bit by wrecking all of the pagan temples.

they were not weaker, the barbarian states were much stronger and united.

new threats meant that traditional roman legions needed to adapt, the roman legions could not face hunnic cavelery and hope to win, they were more mobile and had fantastic archery skills that single, slow moving legions could never face up to. besides it is historically accurate, this is what happened. you are not playing as 'ancient Rome' this is 'late Rome' in its dying days.

it was more an issue that the barbarians, after 400 yrs of being technologically backward, had 'caught up' with Rome, the barbarians first created chain mail and Rome, facing a crisis in the 200's AD, lost 2/3 of its empire to rebellion and barbarians. Constantine changed the army and reformed the economy to save rome from early destruction, however corruption later on led to a complete breakdown in civil harmony, religious turmoil, weak emperors and military dictatorship destroyed rome

chain mail was much stronger and lighter then armour, it used less iron so it was cheaper and it was flexible, it could move as the body moved, whereas armour restricted the arms a great deal and was very heavy. in its late stages The Empire was collapsing, trade was halting, the army was dictating to the emperor not the other way round and money was tight. corruption and arrogance led to a lack of good generals being produced by rome elite and it could no longer afford to defend itself.

thats why the emperor got rid of the legions, they were so powerful that they could simply overthrow an emperor and replace him with someone they like more. the new army worked throughout the 300's but by 400 the army was once again assasinating emperor after emperor just because they did not triple the armies wages or go to war. the army that created Rome ended up destroying it.

As i said the maintaining difficulty was getting to hard so they had to downgrade the soldiers to cut cots, all the nomads and new peoples were coming towards the western empire, it was all just one big catastrophe at one time, if each of these peoples came one by one rome would probably have lasted longer but they were facing multiple hordes.

After the second reform they gave the soldiers cheaper armor because of the maintaining difficulty, and the generals bodyguard's are innacurate, the smaller shields also cut cost of the army, there still was the larger scutum but it was mostly used by officers a smaller version roughly half the size of it was used later on.

Yea both roman factions are awsome and this game is much tougher than just rtw. But, i liked RTW because you can play as the greeks and other factions as well. I like the Sassanid persians in this one better than parthia.

Very good depiction of the battle, but how did you record the video (I know you use fraps) without the HUD? You know, the unit cards and formation buttons are gone. I'd like to be able to get rid of that myself.
