The State of Israel has the best armed forces in the world and gay people are allowed to serve their country in all branches thereof. In fact, sexual orientation is not an excuse not to perform military service in Israel and most rabbis agree with the praxis. Theological arguments are fine when it is a matter of opposing same-sex marriage but nobody should be excluded from the armed forces because of sexual orientation.

@MaryWaterton Really, first of all the Bible is not the law of the land. Second, the moral position that homosexuality is a sin so hide it isn't a valid Christian position on morality. Being homosexual could be argued as a sin tell God comes and settles it, but that doesn't change the fact that if you have those feelings lying about it is morally wrong. That is also very clear in the Bible.

How well do you know your biblical history? A Sodomite is any person from the place of Sodom, just as an Israelite is a person from Israel, or an Ammonite from Ammon, or a Girgashite is a person from Girgash. And God didn't destroy Sodom & Gomorrah based on homosexuality. No He didn't. If you read Ezekiel 16:49-56, you'll see that God destroyed it and other cities due to the sin of inhospitality. Go ahead and read and tell me what you think. I love verse 53, you really have to read that.

@ jusitke07 ... Ezekiel 16:49-56 list ADDITIONAL sins of Sodom, not merely the only sins. It is to be expected that if one dabbles in a sin that God compares to beastiality, that you will also engage in other evil things along the way. One abomination begets another.

There is also the Jewish Talmud, the oral tradition written in the same time frame as the Torah. The Talmud makes it abundantly clear that Jews understood that Sodom & Gomorrah were destroyed over homosexuality.

I think it's a disgrace with the DADT policy forcing Homosexuals & Bisexuals in the miltiary to lie about themselves being Heterosexuals, which goes agains US Military Ethics of Truth & Integrity. The DADT policy perfectly aligns with miltiary laws of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran, China, Pakistan, Syria, North Korea, and Russia. It doesn't align with our strongest allies like Israel, UK, France, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and much of the free world.

Stop cherry-picking from scriptures. If you really intend on literally follow Leviticus, you're going to have to: stone you unruly kids to death (Lev.20:9), don't allow tattooed folks into church (Lev.19:28), don't allow folks who eat pork into church (Lev. 11:7), don't allow folks who eat shrimp in to church (Lev. 11:7), and many more to follow. Oh and don't forget to kick out Gay Christians out of church as stated in Lev. 18:22. There's a reason why we don't follow Leviticus anymore...Jesus

Spoken like a person that never served a day in the military. I didn't even need to look up Mr. Chambliss back ground, but yep there is was "five student deferments" from Vietnam. I hate when these Chicken Hawks try to use the military to further their political and social goal after doing everything they could not to serve. As someone who served, I can tell you there is a lot of questionable moral behavior already in the military. A phrase we always used was "Work hard, party harder".
