I don't see what the big issue is. Living in Australia I can tell you that kangaroo populations ARE excessive, to the point that they have become unstable. In America, open seasons and culling is based around the deer populations. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. Maybe Kangaroos are cuddlier? So what, they're unsustainable, and they're negatively affecting themselves and the farmers whose livelihoods are at stake.

The unfortunate situation with the roos in this TV story is that it was the middle of a 7 year drought in this part of the country and the roos had no food left. If they were left to nature to do the job they would have starved to death, a process that would have taken several weeks and is very unpleasent for the roo. The authorities who would have been accused of cruelty to the roos had they been left there to starve to death. A no win situation for the authorities concerned.

Comparing kangaroos to whales or any other endangered species is nonsense. They are a wild pest here. They outnumber humans on this continent. They are not culled constantly and are laws to prevent excessive hunting. Also the Australian droughts would have seen many of these kangaroos in the remote areas die a much slower death due to starvation. Shooting however would have been more humaine, and allowed for the meat to been eaten.

The unfortunate situation with the roos in this TV story is that it was the middle of a 7 year drought in this part of the country and the roos had no food left. If they were left to nature to do the job they would have starved to death, a process that would have taken several weeks and is very unpleasent for the roo. The authorities who would have been accused of cruelty to the roos had they been left there to starve to death. A no win situation for the authorities concerned.

Not all Australians are for the killing against kangaroos, in fact most do not support the idea; though sadly a minority has influenced the government stating "kangaroos have grown in huge numbers and are becoming pests". So the government has somehow narrowly allowed for culling, when they are not willing enough to pay for their relocation.

I live only cupple mins walk from the defence site that had the roo cull. it's not a big area about 800meters wide by about 1km long its in middle of suburban canberra. its surounded by very high fenses that roo's cant jump over. and if they could chances are they going to get hit by a car. they have no real preditors in aus, orther then dingo's and in saying that if u put dingo in a ring with a roo my money would be on the roo...we are over populated with roos everywhere. so...

I've just come back from far north qld, there were litterally thousands on the property i was on, they were absolutely everywhere, on the way to the property we had many close encounters with roos jumping in front of the car, there were hundreds on the sides of the roads dead, lives are at risk when a kangaroo jumps in front of your vehicle, they really are in plague proportion out west and something has to be done to keep the eco system in ballance or else we will have a huge problem.

This is no different then killing deer, bears Cane Toads.. Kangaroo's are pests. If the international public cared to understand why they would quickly shut their mouths. And who the fuck made it out national symbol anyway? I personally don't kill the animal but if you are a farmer you would very well understand why they cull the animal. Please people practice some understanding before judgment of another country. There is a lot more wrong in the U.S and England then there is here.

I just cannot believe that they would kill Kangaroos. I mean, as a foreigner to Australia, when I think of the country, one of the first things that come to mind are the rare and unique Kangaroo's that live on the continent. I mean they are considered probably the main symbol of Australia. They have a right to live. I just cannot believe that Australia's government won't even do something about it. Something needs to be done before they become endangered species. If they aren't already.

I heard there are estimated 50 million roos in the country. How many do we allow before we try to contol the numbers? Remember they bred to these numbers because we cleared the land and put in dams creating the ideal conditions to graze and breed up. WE created the problem so don't whine about having to manage it.
