As much as I loved the DW games for the NES I hated the fact that almost all of them had pitch-black battle backgrounds, so it was sweet when the backgrounds started to become better and better ever since DW5.

ya...Akira Toriyama did ALL the artwork on all of the Dragon Quest games, whilst doing Dragon Ball, since they all came out at the same time in Japan (the late 80s)

Well, he has a general art style, you can clear similarities in character design in games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger when compared to Dragon Ball.
