I've lived in AVL 12 yrs. If you come here, bring your job with you. the cost of living is high and jobs are few and low-paying. If you are a self-employed writer/artist and can work anywhere, you might like it. Many people come here with stars in their eyes and leave within a year because they can't make much of a living. My advice--stay where you are and make it happen there.
It depends on what kind of home you want....there are properties out there at decent prices. If you insist of 3,000 sq.ft. plus, then you;ll pay over the top.
And to narcopadote: there's a video with a black person who loves living in Asheville, it's on youtube, called The Spirit of Asheville.
Congratulations, you have met the REAL White Trash: The Yuppie. Southern California has lots of them. But they seem to be disappearing. We'll keep sending most of them your way. Hope you have fun living with them!
@Rao665 I've never even been to Asheville. That is just something I keep hearing about the place. I don't even really know. Why send them my way? Keep 'em all to yourself. YOU have fun with the posers.
I'm not sure why so many people hate on this video. Obviously, it is not a tourism-type video that covers the different attractions and things. And that's not a bad. It's not a commercial. I can get that anywhere. Instead, it's nice to hear an honest opinion of the place from someone who lives there. I'd like the young lady to tell me what she likes about some of the others places she's been.
Boring and tedious to the extreme. You appear to be a self-absorbed winer with a vastly over-inflated view of the importance of your opinion. How else to explain this drivel. I guess your name says it all.
Oh my God! Everything you've said I've said. I've lived in Asheville for about 5 years now. I still don't know if I love or hate it. It changes from day to day lol.
Asheville though expensive definitely is a place where a lot of people do not care about the car they drive or everything being "perfect". It is part of the sould of the place. For the south, it is also fairly liberal. It is too bad that its hard to afford housing there. A nice city with wonderful people and culture and a beautiful downtown. Affordable housing is a very serious problem though.
I grew up in Black Mountain near Asheville and I have to say that I agree about the expense of living in that area. It is nice but much more expensive than most places in the south. I just graduated from college and I can tell you that it would be hard to afford to live there again right away. Maybe later but not now.
However, yes Asheville is a very eclectic and unpretentious place (mostly). That is something I greatly appreciate about living there.
"We came to Asheville and really thought we would live like kings."
In more ways than you probably grasp this quote illustrates your problem

Odd the way the culture in Asheville is anti-material...as if being poor is cool...but yet it is soooo freakin' expensive to live. Strange.

Asheville is a wonderful place to live, but it's true, the cost of living there is way too much.
