I realize this is a classic story and opera, etc. etc., and it wasn't intended this way, but I can't help dying at 2:45 and collapsing in laughter at the line "...or sometimes a useful servant..."
ROFL! Useful servant how, exactly?
Apart from that, and all potential aesthetic manners of persuasion, why would Liza go for psycho-Hermann instead of Yeletsky, who is not only rich, of respectable social standing, and is earnest and honest in: "...your friend and always your consoler"? Stupid woman.
I think that original interpretation is more logical and explains Lisa's feelings. Pure neglected girl falls for first word of love and passion and cheated by bad man.
Original Pushkin's plot is different Liza is pure distant relative of countess and subject to countes's tyrany Noone pays attention to her at balls when she goes there with countess since the is pennyless. All of the sudden German who wants to get access to countess starts sending her love letters and she falls in love. ,,, After ordeal German lives in psychiatric asylim and says very quickly 3,7, ace all the time and Liza marries middle age man and moves to country side with him.
Questa aria si deve interpretare con molta dolcezza, innamorato e con una bellissima voce... Può dirmi qualcuno tra voi Signore e Signori che vuol dire l'espressione "bellissima voce"?
Tchaikovsky would not have written one of his most heart-wrenching aria without a point to make. Liza may be a silly woman rejecting Yeletsky who has everything to offer. How unfair. Tchaikovsky must have known about it.
Hvorostovsky of course was born to sing this. Listen to his raw, gutsy performance at the Cardiff finals in 1989 and compare it to this controlled passion, hope against hope. It doesn't get much better than this.
And aren't there plenty of other female characters in the opera repertoire who consistently ignore good guys and pursue bad characters? How about them Carmen, Olga momentarily seduced by Onegin, every victim of Don Giovanni, just to name a few... And would you be nearly as passionate about poor Yeletzky if his part was performed another excellent baritone who unfortunately is old, bald and has a double chin, not a gorgeous stud like Dimitri? Methinks your reasoning lies below your belt :-)
Ladies, your comments about charming and adorable Yeletzky/Hvorostovsky who is too good for Lisa, as well as the critique of her irrational actions made me smile. That's very passionate but rather silly approach to a classic masterpiece which treats the oldest story with great wisdom and precision. Forget the libretto, Pushkin's original play and Tchaikovsky's music for a minute, let me ask you this: since when women have acted according to rhyme and reason and fallen for real good guys?
Considering that this a live performance in an opera theater, it's an oustanding performance. Vocal line, legato, color, range, what else can you ask from a singer?
He sould relax? I am sure he has tried!! Voices are different and the technique is addapting to what nature gave you.
this aria would be sooo perfect if only hvorostovsky were a leeeeetle less arrogant....a quibbling point, i know, but when he sings, i always see him, not the character. the whole thing just doesn't seem genuine to me.
@brigid88, you are right. This is not his real personality. He's not arrogant at all. He's a fun guy to be around... very silly, actually. I've worked with him and he was very quick to compliment other singles.
I don´t understand Liza either. If a man, and especially as kindhearted, loving and passionate as Prince Yeletsky and as maddeningly beautiful, charming and aristocratic as Mr. Hvorostovsky, said these things to me, I would take him no matter the cost and do all in my power to keep him for the rest of my life.
@Tanechka80 Well that is certainly one interesting subject to discuss! Especially since our points of view drammatically differ, as it seems:-))) Should you be interested in talking this further, pm me - I´m really interested in your opinion;-)
@Nefertari155 well, there is the fact that Yeletsky is lying and doesn't actually love her and sounds too good to be true (at least, in the Pushkin story, I haven't seen the entire opera so I don't know if it has the same plot). I agree, though, Hvorostovsky is absolutely charming and an amazing singer and I"m totally in love with him.
@ArtemisFowlIII Well, I believe in the opera version it is slightly differently and he truly loves her (I could be wrong, it is long ago since I've seen it), even considering Tchaikovsky's inclination to change Pushkin's plots a bit - after looking at Tchaikovsky's research website, the Prince was composed as a grand, noble character.
@Nefertari155 You're right, I confused Yeletsky and Herman...I don't even remember Yeletsky playing that large a part in the story (was he even in there?) In which case, I totally agree with you about Liza and the way she reacts.
@ArtemisFowlIII Hi, yup, if you meant Herman, I'm totally with you - in the opera it seems to me all he really cares about are the three winning cards! And as for Yeletsky being too good for her, you've totally got a point there! One thing is falling for the bad guy, that happens... but totally another is drowning yourself when you know there is the good guy waiting for you.
@Nefertari155 yeah, Liza is probably one of the most idiotic characters in opera, I agree about drowning herself. I mean, I realize that, since it's opera, it by some unwritten rule has to be tragic and I guess that's why she needs to die, but still, it's hard to feel any sort of sympathy for her. You just feel sorry for Yeletsky, who, as someone on another video mentioned, is probably one of the most eligible bachelors of opera (especially sung by Hvorostovsky)
Did I previously mention here how WONDERFUL this is??? How can I believe that Liza doesn't feel anything for a guy that says these romantic things with such a sex-appeal and such a voice!!!
Hvorotovsky ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! And this is for sure the BEST romantic aria EVER written for an opera.

I love Dmitri´s version of this, there is a few nice ones around, but he´s absolutely unbeatable in the end, listen to how he holds that note, inreases vibrato and volume and then slowly takes it back again!!!! Amazing.
Simply wonderful! A masterpiece by several geniuses: Tchaikovsky in first place, Dmitri OF COURSE, and the brilliant people of the Mariinsky Theatre---Bravissimo OC! So beautiful!
I wonder who's that beautiful Liza, is she known or is she simply a pretty face they took off the chorus, seeing that it is a Gala and a Baryton segment?
I know she leaves because she doesn´t love him (I speak Russian and know the aria by heart). It´s just that I think that, as a staging, is not very convincing... That´s only my opinion, though.
I agree with Orfanomondo: it's the best Dima's performance of this aria I've heard in youtube. He is indeed at his best and together with Gergiev's conduction gives the aria a touch of mastery!
I don't like Netrebko's hairstyle nor the staging: why does she leave just before the end of the aria, in the most moving moment???
Just goes to show that crazy, obsessive love blinds us to everything else....Tchaikovsky wants us to see that Lisa is passing up a good, loving and passionate man who would give her everything for a more exciting one, a bad-boy compulsive gambler....we all see how foolish she is. And maybe some of us have even done the very same thing, against all reason. (I'll never tell!) My God, does Dmitri breathe?
Of all the versions in YouTube (there are at least 5 other ones sung by Dmitri)this is my favourite. In its unhurried tempo it allows the singer to pull all stops in his masterful legato and breathtaking breathcontrol. For me it also best catches the true feeling of this neglected opera. DH at his very best.
Thanks for posting this beautiful moment from the Mariinsky gala; I can't stop watching and listening... And thanks for the second chance you're giving me to have the video of such wonderful spectacle.
