Love this song and was madly in love with Chuck when I was in high school. Glad he's found his way back from his personal hell, but I'm sad that he seems to bear so much bitterness toward his ex-band mates. Chuck, if you read this, what's that saying? I was like 8 years old when this song came out. I liked and bought the 45 but it made no sense to me whatsoever: one is the loneliest number? It seems funny now to think of singing along with it and thinking what the heck is he talking about. Some of there other songs were like that to me too but I liked them anyway. As I recall, you could not escape hearing one of their songs on any given day so I just kind of went along with the music.

Well the song is called "One"...although harmless enough at first, if we familiarize ourselves with elementary symbology we see that "One" can also symbolize God, The Monad, The Absolute, unity, it is the probability of an event that is certain to occur, and let's not even start of the concept of "perfection"..the exoteric significance of the number is even alluded to in the song itself...this being so I think explains somewhat the debate in question.

They had a good run in the late 60's, early 70's. I had the album Captured Live at the Forum from 1969. I remember on the album the singer said "What u say back there? You can't hear back there? See u should have bought the $5.50 seats up front. LOL! The best seats at the show were $5.50. What a change in the ticket prices and in the music. Here's a thought for the holy rollers! If "God" had not lead the Jewish people and their empire out of Egypt and back to Jerusalem, then Egypt would be forced to take action against the increase of the Jewish population in Egypt (And "Ra" did by having all baby boys be drown in the lake {Sidestory...}), most likely killing them off. If I'm wrong it will not matter, but I don't have enough faith to risk my eternal soul to hell. People say Christians must have a lot of faith, but personally I think it takes far more to not believe.

This was my favorite song in 1969. I was 19 years old, had a 1969 Z-28 Camaro, and this song was one to "lay rubber to." I can still feel and hear the roar of that car leaving the stoplights and getting a wheel in every gear while this song was blasting.  Those were the days, and the music and the good times were great.

You are correct - how can a mortal understand God? The Apostle Paul says, in 1 Corinthians 2:6-16, that these deep things, though normally incomprehensible, are understood by those with the Spirit of God and the Mind of Christ, which God REALLY wants everyone to have.  Jesus said his words were Spirit, Light and Truth and that he reveals God to us, through his word. Yes?

@proffromgview Here's a thought...if god is "unknowable" to mere mortals why is the concept of immortality in heaven even that appealing? If god is unknowable in this life would he be suddenly knowable in the afterlife? I can only assume (if god is immutable) that it is something about us that changes with immortality of the soul?!? In a resurrected body we may perceive many different things but can we "know" we are perceiving god? We may see only the manifestation of an unperceivable being..YAY
