Love this song and was madly in love with Chuck when I was in high school. Glad he's found his way back from his personal hell, but I'm sad that he seems to bear so much bitterness toward his ex-band mates. Chuck, if you read this, what's that saying? Holding a grudge just gives your enemies rental space in your head, or something like that. Namaste ~~ one of your biggest fans.
I was like 8 years old when this song came out. I liked and bought the 45 but it made no sense to me whatsoever: one is the loneliest number? It seems funny now to think of singing along with it and thinking what the heck is he talking about. Some of there other songs were like that to me too but I liked them anyway. As I recall, you could not escape hearing one of their songs on any given day so I just kind of went along with the music.
And please don't try to say their lobbying groups are any more powerful than the gay rights caucus, or the Rainbow Coalition, or 1000 other lobbying groups trying to affect U.S. law. We all believe what we choose to believe because we are in a country that has promised us those freedoms. Remember, once you change "God given rights" to "Government given rights"... you can lose them with one vote.
The only thing religion does is waste time and gas money on sunday to go to church... we can read the bible and pray on our own time. and our parents teach us morels, so wtf do we even need religion? Truth is, we don't! We created it, so it serves no value other than to aimlessly believe in fairy tales that may or may not be true. If you weren't alive back then, how the fuck do you know that there was even a jesus????? Riddle me that bullshit with facts (not a damn religious book)...
Some people need more than a room in their house for observations of their religion. The sad truth is, we fight for gay rights, we fight for animal rights, some of us are even willing to KILL for the environment. But one of the fundamental reasons our country was created is constantly attacked by people like you. If people wish to go to church, and believe whatever they wish to believe... how on EARTH does that affect you?
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." -Marx
THE BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN IT IS THIS. you can be a father, can be a son, and you can be a husband...but you are still one person. and as my brother said. HE's ways are above our ways. who can know the mind of CHRIST but we have the mind of CHRIST.
God is JESUS CHRIST. If you really really give it deep thought. Who can save a soul? Only Almighty GOD can. God became a MAN to save man. the first adam made us fall (from grace) the second ADAM redeems us back to the FATHER. AND AND AND if you read Isaiah 9:6 very prayerfully (carefully) The CHILD is called all 3 and then all 3 in 1...'THE EVERLASTING FATHER' you would not call someone something they're not...ESPECIALLY GOD ALMIGHTY...the CHILD JESUS CHRIST is GOD THE FATHER...GOD ALMIGHTY.
@kirby4d Are you familiar with the concept of symbolism? The esoteric etiology of positional notation, or indeed mathematics itself? That some believe that music conveys emotions we can't otherwise explain?
@kirby4d As for why some may argue? Well the song is called "One"...although harmless enough at first, if we familiarize ourselves with elementary symbology we see that "One" can also symbolize God, The Monad, The Absolute, unity, it is the probability of an event that is certain to occur, and let's not even start of the concept of "perfection"..the exoteric significance of the number is even alluded to in the song itself...this being so I think explains somewhat the debate in question.
They had a good run in the late 60's, early 70's. I had the album Captured Live at the Forum from 1969. I remember on the album the singer said "What u say back there? You can't hear back there? See u should have bought the $5.50 seats up front. LOL! The best seats at the show were $5.50. What a change in the ticket prices and in the music. Here's a thought for the holy rollers! How about posting about the relevant video/song and post your God talk in the appropriate forums. Just an idea.
@220patty Hey, my name is the same as yours. Why is it sad? You mean because you're so young you weren't here when it first became popular? If so, yes that's sad! We had some awesome music back then!
@crittsh God loved us so much that he gave us freedom. Otherwise the world would be full of robots, and with freedom comes good and bad, success and failure. He also loved us so much that He gave His Son for our redemption. Once again you have the CHOICE to decide for yourself what you will chose.
Hm... I disapprove the robot theory. If "God" had not lead the Jewish people and their empire out of Egypt and back to Jerusalem, then Egypt would be forced to take action against the increase of the Jewish population in Egypt (And "Ra" did by having all baby boys be drown in the lake {Sidestory...}), most likely killing them off. As "God" and "Moses" came to Egypt and led the slaves free of Egypt, things did not go that way. We would be in Egypt or near there, if "God" and "Moses" did not (c)
@poundsand Is god not omnipotent (all powerful)? If he is all powerful the he should have been able to give humans free will AND ensure the universe was free of evil...even if it is a logical impossibility, He should be able to do it!
@2075Nathan He is but we were given a choice and took the wrong one. Otherwise there would not have been free will. By definition your statement limits choice.
@poundsand."you have the CHOICE to decide for yourself what you will chose." - Ummm, this is a tautology..If you didn't have the choice to decide what you chose, well, it wouldn't be a choice!
If god is omnipotent why do christians describe him mostly in terms of his ability to love?Surely (to anthropomorphize god further) he his capable of equal amounts of hatred also? In fact if we don't know the nature of god, what does it mean to say that He "loves" us?
@2075Nathan He loves you enough to give you a choice of salvation by way of His Son. It's up to you what choice you make. As for me, I'm taking the easy way out and excepting the sacrifice of Christ. If I'm wrong it will not matter, but I don't have enough faith to risk my eternal soul to hell. People say Christians must have a lot of faith, but personally I think it takes far more to not believe.

I was 12 in 1969 but had a 68 Camaro when I turned 16. I remember ET Mags, Air Shocks, Traction Bars, 8 Track Tapes, Halter Tops, Bell Bottoms, and Great 70's Songs like this one. Where did it all go and why ? Going back would be fun !
Jean jackets, light brown corduroy jackets, desert boots (and other variations of suede shoes) sweatshirts with hoods (not hoodies) under the jackets in cold weather. And don't forget your 8-track tapes in the car and your pet rock at home. And that thing in your pack of cigarettes that wasn't in there when you bought them.
This was my favorite song in 1969. I was 19 years old, had a 1969 Z-28 Camaro, and this song was one to "lay rubber to." I can still feel and hear the roar of that car leaving the stoplights and getting a wheel in every gear while this song was blasting. Those were the days, and the music and the good times were great.
This song is like Scripture in Rock and Roll speak. One is the loneliest number indeed. Imagine how God must have felt in the beginning - was he ever alone? He would have to be, wouldn't he, if he is before all things?
You are correct - how can a mortal understand God?
