Mi ricordo questo spettacolo dal vivo Furlanetto era migliore Mephistofeles dal Pertusi e naturalmente dal Raimondi...nel 21 secolo la voce di basso non esiste piu,una triste realtá .
I don't really like how he went about this. I appreciate the technique he uses, I think it's great for other (and most) operatic performances, but his voice isn't near devilish enough because he goes about it so lightly. And is it just me, or was he really sharp on the note at 0:27?
Hahahaha. He knows very well how to sing, thank you. The best ones in this role are THE GREAT MAESTRO NICOLAI GHIAUROV and BORIS CHRISTOFF. GHIAUROV sings it light and noble too, but it sounds great.
The beautiful basso voice is not about singing it dark and closed, but light and noble. Personal experience.
6) In the end, after Mephisto yells Jugée - (You are doomed to Marguerite) its just daybreak on Easter, and the resurrection of the Lord chases away all evil, so the angels sign "Sauvée" (she is saved). Yet she slowly sinks in that strange hole they put in the scene, which conveys the idea that she went to hell.
4) In the kermesse, he reads the lifes line in Wagners hand but he has a glove.
5) When Valentin and the other people kneel to pray, he grabs his sword point downwards, swords in this position acquire the form of a cross, to frighten the devil away, but the sword they use does not form cross (no wonder the devil was not scared)
Furlanetto has the best stage presence of all. He puts acting into it. hes not just a good singer hes a convincing actor. The Gary Oldman of Opera lol
If you think his singing is weak here and there it could very well be because of the quality of microphones. Listen to the "cage match" of Sparafucile (search on youtube) and you hear the quality of singers "improve" as we move through time. In all actuality Ramey often sounds the best because we have great recording equipment these days.
aloysius it isnt impressive that he can hit the top note without covering, alot of professional singers dont have to cover but for aethetics as well as long term vocal health, we do.
the high notes have to be covered ,because, the notes are screams. Covering notes for real Bass, not poor tenors who sing low for not having high notes is the italian good school.Bravo Furlanetto.
Seriously! It's a matter of taste! What about Tibbet, Hines, Pinza? Great interpretations! Fantastic singers! And George London, the bass baritone, does it just as well.
Frankly, I found this performance of the song a bit disappointing. Personally, I even found the orchestra to be lacking. He started off strong, but when he got to "Et Satan conduit le bal", the quality seemed to diminish. Perhaps it's because I'm attempting to compare him with Nicolai Ghiaurov and he's singing in my favorite opera. Perhaps I would like him better if I was listening to him sing something I wasn't so familiar with.
oh, this is a silly discussion. such different voices, different performers. Furlanetto is a rockstar with a big, beautiful, dramatic voice. this is not to dimish the beauty of Siepi, the charisma of Pinza, the roar that was Ghiaurov. They're not competing, people, they're performing.
I understood what you said. And I am going to insist. If he is the best italian bass from the 80's, the situation is really bad. Because Furlanetto compared to Pinza, Neri, Christoff, or Siepi, really sucks.
In the 80's , I would say early 80's Cesare Siepi was still singing. So to say that Furlanetto is the best Italian Bass from the 80's it is just your personal taste, not the reality.
I have had the ultimate pleasure of seeing Ferruccio live as Boris Godunov. His voice is on another plane of existence. He totally left all the other singers in the dust. His vocal power dominated all other singers that night. I have never ever heard anyone 'live' that was as powerful as Ferruccio. CD's and DVD's do him no justice. In the world of sardine opera singers.... Ferruccio is a great white shark.
is this supposed to take place in coney island or something? nice!!

bäh, no good, some notes are to high and not well in the written tempo. His Leporello is much better.

Mi fanno ridere i signori "nessuno" che scrivono "non sa come cantare" su di un cantante di chiara fama come Furlanetto :)
Detto questo non è uno dei miei favoriti, mi è piaciuto particolarmente come Sparafucile però.

Bravo for the singers, but this Opéra National de Paris (4 March 2009, Films& Arts channel, in Peru) is the worst presentation Ive ever seen:
1] Mephisto comes down from upstairs, A devil should come from beneath
2) lépée au côte, escarcele pleine, un riche manteau sur l'épaule There is nothing of it. Hes just with a robe de chambre as is Faust.
3) Faust drinks in homage to the beauty of Marguerite (à toi, vision) who appears, but she is behind him; he should be facing her.

Thie basses are not from the '80-s to nowadays, they are legendary, but not living singers.
And Furlanetto is a very good bass too.
